UK Producers Blawan and Pariah hit Goodgod for a marathon back-to-back set traversing the outer reaches of techno and bass music.
We caught up with them before the show to talk about their projects, why they love vinyl, and why they hate the term "Post-Dubstep".

I personally am happy that vinyl costs more, you're right Jamie, it's a canvas that you're painting on to. Vinyl art work is a thing to behold. I bought the Burial Massive Attack four walls EP, i love it, yeah it's rare but i've played the shit out of it on my Dads old Thorens belt player. It sounds mint. i'm well happy. Buy Vinyl.

Blawan and Pariah are both correct to distance themselves from being labelled as dubstep artists, neither sound like the genre. But by being bracketed as such i believe it allowed them to be exposed to a huge audience and gain followers after. If Blawan never released his first songs on Hessle and R&S and put em out on say Perc, he may not have become as well renowned as he is now. Thankfully they now have the resources and knowledge to start their own vinyl label and hone their craft and sound.

The problem is generalisation. Dubstep is a toxic label/brand now for a lot of people. Why? Because there's too much shit dubstep; There's good dubstep too, there's great dubstep. But if you're forced to label someone as dubstep, there's a good chance the person who asked is gonna think, "Jesus, not more fucking dubstep. I hate dubstep." And then they wont listen to it with open ears. I suppose you could say it's actually like decent dubstep? Or you could just say electronic music. Better IMO

dude we need more opinionated people - if people didn't have opinions on stuff there'd be nothing to discuss ever. he seems pretty genuine -not that pretentious- but only really because he's got a northern accent haha maybe if he was posh i'd feel differently

using a lot of genre names to explain and describe their music, but at the same time they don't like to label their own stuff. Respect to these guys, but the fear of being labelled and the story of how it confines them etc is getting quite tiring. its how we refer to things, a necessary evil, deal with it. in the interview its like they are embarrassed when they associate them to dubstep

It really is absurd. I count myself lucky just to be able to buy mp3s in this shit economy... you have to be pretty wealthy to prioritize music in terms of sound quality rather than by budgeting.

lol lemme guess you learned about techno recently and you think detroit is everything. lol. get out m8

Out of curiosity does anyone know how artists like these get into to production? Like what kind of equipment do people start with? How do you work with vinyl vs CDs etc?

Fantastic, now tell me how I can get the money to keep buying records when each 12" averages about 30 bucks to get to me. Most people can't afford to buy wax. Why do recording artists have this idea that if people don't go to the trouble of buying decent turntables (fuckin painful process) and paying outrageous shipping costs they don't deserve their music? In regards to Blawan's statement about British techno, he's talking about the industrial, cold Birmingham sound, not techno as a whole

They aren't even doing anything that is sonically-complex focus on creating a vibe rather than a sound, If your things aren't coming together well, they just won't sound right.

yeah fair play to him. it’s good to think about stuff and analyse things to form opinions. but over thinking can sometimes be detrimental to the final formation of said opinions i guilty of that myself.. perhaps he was just jet lagged and grumpy from the flight over lol. I’m not sure if i agree with your posh-logic tho lol
@blackgenet
@blackgenet 12 лет назад
i completely agree with you.. sure post dubstep is an annoying term and not so fitting anymore but for a long time no one would have called blawan techno or pariah garage... they moan about it but at the same time they seem fairly unsure of how to classify themselves anyway
@jimillsung
@jimillsung 12 лет назад
hm fair enough its just the fact that without realising it i judge people on whether they are pretentious half on what they say and half on how they say which is wrong but oh well

I think the deal is that genres are becoming less important. Music has splintered into so many forms and expressions and no one can keep track of them anymore. Trying to keep track of them you just end up sounding corny. In each little clique, people rarely need to talk about what it is they do or like. it's implicit in what they sound like or listen to. I think the future is more of that, while the mainstream will still need to label things, like the idiotic EDM-label...
@morgengabe1

It's really not that that difficult, plenty of people have ripped it off from blawan. Pariah uses pretty standard 808s and 909s
@jimillsung
@jimillsung 12 лет назад
actually i doubt he's intentionally dumbed down his use of melody either he's probably just sort of overlooked it.
