BLAZER (motorcycle movie) by Simon and Gregory Mills 

Haha! I think all of us riders of old bikes have been there. I felt the frustration, the exhilaration, the stress of all his stuff so far away, needing to keep the bike at high idle. LOL! Reminiscence of the old days, inexperienced, with an old bike like that. brings a tear of connection to my eyes. Good job with this guys - didn't know that what we've all felt some time or other could be made into a short film like this. :-) Keep it up!

Late to the party here, but what a great short movie! What's lost on some, is it's a kind of metaphor on life. You don't anticipate the small inconveniences that show up in day to day trivial things until...shit happens and it just can defeat you if u let it. Lol, I've owned/own old bikes and they are both a joy and can drive you bonkers! Patience, as in life are key. 🙂

Lol! All I can say is; the mechanical condition of a motorcycle reflects the metaphysical harmony of the pilgrim who turned the wrenches.

Portrays the feeling very well. The only bad thing about a situation like this is when you share it with other people who are saying "Have you tried this?", "Maybe you forget XYZ", "It should be starting" It's my old bike.... It will start when it wants to, leave us be

Watching this film in Panama and thinking about the Blazer I have in boxes back in Scotland. I'm not sure if this film is inspiring me to re-build or not. It brought back many memories of bikes I have owned and ridden over the years. There was never much money to invest in new metal and after a while out of necessity my mechanical skills developed to the point where I wasn't intimidated by broken things. That's not to say that all my bikes ran perfectly. In truth I can't remember one bike that didn't do the "refuse to re-start" trick on me at some point, so that, along with my mechanical development I learned to recognise the pattern of disbelief, rage, petulance and finally acceptance that accompanied each breakdown. On those occasions where the machine had to be pushed home I have to admit I got the chance to really appreciate my surroundings, even if I had to appreciate them for longer than I had intended. I don't know whether I was an optimist or a masochist but there was something about owning, riding and working on bikes that kept me coming back for more despite the disappointments. I guess I still am....I think I'll re-build the old Blazer after all.

Been there done that. Had all the joy of motorcycling, right up to the time she won't play - then she's a heap of scrap iron - until she starts again !!!!!!! Excellent film, really enjoyed it.

While I see some jackasses commenting here on not getting back 16 minutes of life...I've had rides like this. There is a roller coaster of excitement between the joy of rolling down the road care free motor purring, and that awful quiet sound that happens when something goes bad wrong and you are sitting there looking at your ride wondering WTF just went wrong. Pretty much captures the spirit of riding in a short film. Good work, and the camera angles were nice too. Even stuck for a moment, he was able to show there was enjoyment he could gain, just by being in the moment with the fine weather and surroundings. Good observation, and a great way to show that in the end he was still ok.

had one back in the 70's. that's exactly what they were like. incredible I thought it was just my one.

I have a 1971 BSA 500 Victor B-50T (the big brother of the 250 Triumph in the video). It was my first bike, bought used in 1973 for $550, and I still own it today although it's been a basket case for 30 years. This movie completely captures my experience of owning such a bike. By the way, I appreciated the subtle moment when the bike marked its spot.

This makes me remember those good old times when I was riding an untrustable Jawa 350. No matter what I ride I learned to always carry the toolkit with me :)

Had a Harrley Davidson Hummer in the 1960s with kick to start only... It would kick back ever so often and nearly toss me over the handlebar!!!

My life last summer, 10000km on a 79 RD400, it made my soul grow.

I have had this same thing happen to me and this made me laugh out loud because I had a similar reaction - down to the can't get off the throttle bit at the end. Brilliant.

Superb , what classic bike owner has not been in that situation, it's a scene of biker life, funny how a situation like that really pees you off, but it's funny and interesting to watch on film, I can relate to that film many times, thanks guys, enjoyed that.

In student days in London had a Honda 250, when the kickstart didn't work, ran it down a hill. Then pushed it up again. The clutch used to fail all the time too. Now at 60 in Cambridge, Mass., have the same bike but electronic start only & no center stand. Loved the first bike, love this one. Thanks for the super film & ride safe!

That Triumph really reminds me of my past '78 XT500s (two) that I commuted on in the early 80s. Kick only with a manual compression release. Motorcycling at it's most pure & elemental. I can relate to his rage when the bike wouldn't start. I kicked mine over in a rage once...

Had a 71 TR 25W, some years ago, same engine and basic layout, never ever let me down. Now, my current 52 BSA A10, that's always an entertaining and usually mechanically challenging ride. If it don't start after 5 kicks, turn the fuel off, kick it twice more, walk away for 10 minutes. Never fails. Usually! Bikes with only kick starts have way more soul, if you've only ever ridden 100% reliable bikes with electric starters, you've missed out on at least half the joy of biker life.

It's an ironic mini-play situation, very funny too. Its a BSA engine, B44/B50, unit single, owned one for 10 years, a well maintained BSA single would not let you down like this, after running that sweet on the road! Anyone, who has owned one usually became a capable home-mechanic, Starting proceedure, ignition on, pull the lever for the valve lifter cable to open, push the kickstarter down, watch the ammeter flick, let the kickstart come back up & then do a full swing down; Witn a no firing situation, carry out, 3 kicks max, if it did not fire, probably a wet plug, petrol off, 2 kicks with WOT to dry the plug, petrol on & bingo or if this failed, plug out, dry it on a rag warm it up on a lighter flame, re-tighten in the head & bingo you're away. Did we see this in the film? The main problem @ this time, wasn't the bikesm but mechanically ignorant, incompetent ham-fisted owners. A B44 won the World Motorcross Champion in I think 1965, with Jeff Smith aboard. Incidentally, after owning fuel-injected, ECU controlled machines, I would rather tinker with 70s technology to get me home, rather than be trailered home with an dead technically-advanced machine & an expensive repair!.

Liked the movie very much... For us, owners of Classic bikes (Royal Enfield), this is a common situation, sometime or another... Liked th Triumph Blazer 55 (250cc) - Scrambler type - very much. Beautiful machine! Will keep posted for more videos on Classic bikes!

i have in real life struggled with my HD 1985 low rider quite a few times, so i know what this is like.. kick after kick and no start.. you hate the bloody thing..! when it runs it, no probs, you love it.

BSA/Triumph unit single(with AMAL concentric carburettor) starting procedure: Cold engine: Engage valve lifter(compression release).Rotate engine to just past TDC on compression/power cycle.Release valve lifter. Tickle carb,and engage choke(if so equipped). Turn ignition switch on(if so equipped). Allow starter lever to return to top of stroke,but make sure starter gear is engaged before kicking. DO NOT crack throttle.In fact,keep your hands off the throttle until the engine fires. Give a mighty kick. Repeat as necessary. Actually,if everything is in good tune,it will probably start first kick.Sometimes it helps to kick it through once with the ignition off,just to sort of prime the combustion chamber.If it won't start with the above procedure,you'll have to play around with cracking the throttle a bit,or choke position,or maybe tickling a bit more.You will just have to experiment with what works,but if everything(compression,ignition,carburetion) are right,the above procedure will work every time for me. AMAL concentric carbs were never designed to idle.They were made to run with the throttle open,and they do that quite well.They have better throttle response on a big thumper than any Mikuni,Keihin,or Bing carb I've ever tried.You can whack the throttle open without having the death bog that those other carbs always display on 4 stroke singles.But they won't hunker down to a low idle.The idle circuit on these thing was an afterthought.Not a real problem with twins or triples,but with a thumper,you either have to keep blipping the throttle,or set the idle at about 1600 RPM,like the guy in this video. Hot starting is whole different thing.All kidding aside,I try to stop at the top of a hill,or at least on a flat hardpack,so I can bump start it if I have to. Whatever you do,DON'T tickle it,or use the choke. Crack the throttle about a quarter to half way and kick as you normally would. It should start,but if it doesn't after 2 or 3 kick this way,it's probably not going to,so bump start it if you can,but if not: Pull in the valve lifter,hold the throttle wide open,and with the ignition ON,kick it fast several times.You're not trying to start it,but instead trying to get lots of fresh air into the cylinder. Often,it will fire while doing this.If so,immediately release the valve lifter.It may not keep running,but it's ready to start now,so go with your normal kick procedure,but with the throttle wide open,NO tickle,or choke. If. after all this,it still doesn't start,pull out the plug,and dry it and check to make sure you are actually getting a spark.If it's getting a spark,kick it through several times with the plug out,throttle wide open.This gets even more fresh air in there. By this time,the damn thing's probably cooled off enough that you'll probably have to tickle it again anyway. ,

I also had a Blazer early 80s, just bought a 72 Blazer fully restored. Remember many moments like the film, hoping for fewer this time round....but I guess it's gonna be the same again!! Happy days!

5 minutes in I thought "what a stupid flick" but watched it to the end and I rather liked it. Quite humorous really. Ride a Honda and this roadside event won't happen as often. God Bless! Enjoy the ride.

Brought back memories of my 1986 Honda XR-250 and my 1990 XR-250 any time I happen to drop them while riding in the woods. They were a bear to get running and there were time I was like WTF and wanted to just leave them there and walk home .. lol

I heard that one guy even shot the bike with a rifle since it wouldn't start. Definitely painful. Great short film 👍😂

Those Victor 441's were torque monsters and probably got me started on a lifetime of torque cams in almost every vehicle I had, plus the present Harley. Never go over 50 miles without a toolkit and basic mechanical knowledge or learn to cuss really good...that'll fix it...!

Takes me back, I had a Blazer blew up one engine when the conrod snapped. I got another B25 engine from Ned Smil for £50. I had great fun on that bike and a couple of nasty crashes neither were my fault. Some people are so serious, it's a film not real .

I once got stuck on my old Enfield in the middle of nowhere.kicked endlessly for almost an hour.no help around.so had to keep kicking n somehow I was lucky it did start.never found the reason. That feeling, thrill cannot be put into words.u just need to get unlucky and experience it and ofcourse, get away with it !!!

I think everyone has had this experience in one form or another, mine was with a Kawasaki klx300, so insanely frustrating.

So glad i bought a Jap bike. Never have to think about it breaking down.
