@@mttic55 "Shinigami" is also technically their species. Without a gigai that makes them a Human/Shinigami hybrid, Shinigami can't even have children with humans.
Another moment could be when she met Aizen under Central 46. He didn't hesitate to engage in a fight with Toshiro, and you'd assume Aizen would take out the Soul Society's strongest healer while she was under the effects of Kyoka Suigetsu. Instead he just dips saying "I will not see you again". Another subtle moment (imo) could be in the Hueco Mundo arc where the Exequias leader accepted her truce to not fight with one another.
Yh, I initially had the Hueco Mundo scene in the clip but wasn't too sure if the Exequias leader was scared of her or if he was just being pragmatic based on his reason for backing out🤔
The way Aizen was like “I’m surprised you had noticed something with my dead body” like she isn’t talking to a woman who hasn’t killed thousands of souls
@@thesheepfollows2985 I figure Rudbornn, the Exequias leader, was warned by his battle instinct not to attack Unohana. I remember a Japanese story in which two samurai confront each other and are able to decide the conflict without ever having drawn their swords. They both knew who the better warrior was and what the outcome would be just by sizing each other up. I've seen this play out in multiple anime series, too, like in One Punch Man, when Carnage Kabuto sensed that if he attacked Saitama from behind, Saitama would certainly kill him, so Kabuto got afraid and fled to the other side of the room. I figure Rudbornn's battle instincts were screaming at him not to attack Unohana, so he made up a questionable excuse to save face and retreat.
@@jerkface38 There are no retcons? This has been in the manga forever. She was foreshadowed to be terrifying since she was introduced, this was just the reveal
@@trisertricordoh2127 that's off-subject and unrelated to this topic. It's fairly obvious this is a retcon. In fact, most of bleach is a retcon but you wouldn't know that. Rukia was the original main character so yeah, I still think Unohana being a Zaraki or whatever is a retcon.
@@jerkface38 Not really, it has been hinted that there had to be a reason for that many characters to be scared of her, and her being the first Kenpachi of the first gen Gotei fits. Also the reason I asked that about Misaki was that it was hinted for the longest time that there was more to Ichigo. Heck the first time Old Man Zangetsu tried to say his real name it was blocked, which gets revealed near the end of the series. It isn't a retcon if there is breadcrumbs that can be acounted for it.
😂 kinda true we got Unohana - its sad we dont see her delete people other than Kenpachi a couple 100 or thousands of times. Aizen watched out for her (she also the only captain to not get 1 shot & embarrassed cause he fully avoided her no matter what lol) & Gin - He was the 1st person to make Aizen fear death & think he was dead/dying & on top of it all Aizen aint even fully trust Gin & still got caught lackin. Clearly didnt pay attention or watch out for him 😂 & literally without plot armor was killed & 1 shot in return.
@@giljua6191 counterpoint to Yhwach: how many Soul Reapers even KNEW the Quincy King existed, let alone was a potential threat? The answer is not that many, considering Unohana was the only other original Gotei 13 member still in the Squads by the time of the invasion, and Yhwach got put into a super coma that lasted around a thousand years.
People always argue with this point as if we're saying Unohana would've won. That's not the point, the point is that Aizen didn't want to fight her. Maybe because defeating her would take longer than he wants to waste, or perhaps he isn't sure he could do it without injury, either way, it's the respect and agency he shows Unohana in this scene, which he would not show most characters, that clues us in to her potential strength.
The most important fact was that Head Captain Yama always listened to what she said. He never argued with her once. He'll give orders but never demand.
@@jerkface38Zaraki is his own person, but the Kenpachi title was hers first, and hers it would be until Unohana helps Zaraki surpass her, leading to her death. It’s not a retcon at all lol
I remember thinking her bankai was pretty much immortality. Defeating her would be damn near impossible because she would just instantly heal any wounds you throw at her.
I always knew she was a threat the way she can merely scare people with her presence. Even Zaraki acknowledged her back then and that guy was just a bloodthirsty brute
***SPOILER ALERT **** IT HAS TO DO WITH ZARAKI AND UNOHANAS PAST. ZARAKI ALREADY KNEW SHE WAS KENPACHI, THERE WAS FEW PEOPLE WHO KNEW SHE WAS BC HE NAMED YACHIRU AFTER HER THE PERSON HE RESPECTED THE MOST, WHICH HER NAME IS YACHIRU.
@drunkasaur wut? have you forgotten even she herself claimed that she is also affected by kyoka suigetsu, and that his spiritual pressure is stronger compared to her. She may be the first kenpachi and known as one of the strongest criminals in soul society history, doesnt shes stronger than anyone, when she said "I am stronger than "anyone" except you" she meant the current gotei 13 not including aizen lmao. We know shes strong, and that I idolize her but we have to accept the fact that she is not the strongest amongst all the captains including the original captains of the gotei 13
@@kevencarlbaguio9146 You seem to misinterpret things. She was the strongest in her era and this one as that is what being a Kenpachi means. She was only surpassed in TYBW and when she first met Zaraki.
Bruh its one of my biggest gripes with anime. The whole "I wont fight with my full power until this guy has already murdered almost everyone!" Like mother fucker do you know how many people would have been saved if Captains just used their fucking Bankai?
The last order from Yamamoto was to stay at the squad 4 barracks. I’m sure the quincies didn’t attack the injured because they would have to deal with her.
@@doms5755 Well not every sternritter were there on the first invasion, considering she was high captain level at the least, she could of probably beat them in a 1v1 or 1v2 situation, considering how no royal guards or Jugram would of fought her

scared is the wrong word considering only yamamoto was above aizen but he definitely knew She was a problem. for example aizen could one shot arancar arc kanpachi but he still know his potentail was a problem so he kept him away
@@Iroh10800 🤡🤡aizen ss arc can't beat unohana in a direct fight lmao . Just to fight barragan he had to trick a little with ks . Aizen Arrancar arc too .
@@Iroh10800 it doesn't matter if Aizen can or can't take Unohana. Rudbornn is scared off by Unohana because he doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell and he can sense that. Rudbornn shows up to execute Gantenbein and Chad but is stopped when Unohana and Isane show up to heal them. Unohana smiles and says they're not here to fight, stopping Isane from engaging the enemy and the two have a stare down for a moment before Rudbornn sheaths his sword and runs off. The scene has nothing to do with Aizen. Besides, I can be scared of someone pointing a gun at me while ALSO being scared of someone with a bigger gun.
I honestly just chalked her up to being your average kind woman that you don’t want to piss of because of her position I did not expect it’s because she’s literally like that
Exactly lol. Although I initially thought lower levels shinigami were just generally scared of captains, but once the shadow effect came over her face I knew she was built different 😨
What Bleach did well was how it showed the narration and the characters (real behavior, personality and development) little by little with some signs during the story, not everything in one single moment
Heck I cought something about little Yachiru that most didn't. Look back through most of her scenes. SHe licks her lips when Nnotira said he couldn't be cut, she looked happy when Zaraki wanted to talk to hs sword and then looked grumpy when he told her to be quiet, and the cherry on top Starrk and Lily.
Yeah, I always liked how she acted all sweet and kind but everyone was still deathly afraid of her. Kubo-sensei is either one hell of a troll of a grand master of foreshadowing. Probably a bit of both.
@@imofage3947 Soi Fon's Bankai is an upgrade of her Shikai, one hit to kill a target instead of two. She justs hates it, as it isn't stealthy. I'll give you Yami though, I refuse to think there was a 0 esparda. But a point in Foreshadows is finding little clues about things you find out from later chapters and looking at past parts. Take the fact that you never see Ikkaku use his Bankai again, in the manga, and the reveal by Mayuri about how Bankai's are weaker when damaged, as he modifies his so even when destoryed he can still use it. While yes most of the plot of Bleach was at the moment writing, you can still forshadow key information.
@@trisertricordoh2127 Ok, but tell me one time when Soi Fon managed to finish off an opponent with Jakuho Raikoben? For the amount of energy it takes to fire it (3 days to recharge, normally), it's remarkably ineffective. I believe she lobbed it off twice in the Fake Karakura Town arc, her evil clone (in the filler arc) fired it once, and I think that's it. So we have an 0-3 record. She SAYS it can one shot an enemy. But it usually just stings a bunch and sets up a dramatic reveal that the enemy is mostly fine.
Remember, it is not her bankai that she was known for.... It's her swordsmanship which surpass even Yamamoto and brutal method of killing people. So, if anyone say the quincy can defeat her after taking her bankai.... They are dead wrong. Only the heavy hitter will be able to defeat her but they won't win easily.
Tho think that sweet lady and amazing healer was once a cold blooded killer one that gave no mercy and showed nothing but hell on a battle field God damn she's a beast
Right? I always thought she was interesting even before it was revealed she was the first Kenpachi. I liked the mystery behind people being afraid of her, even other captains lol
Agreed! I think it’s just Kubo adding some light humour to show how a motherly captain can be scary af rather than her true power/character coz ichigo and those unranked shinigami would not have known. The real foreshadowing, imo, is when u see time and time again Uno, Shunsui and Ukitaki are the captains that would take on Yamma. Also, when her rigai took on Yoruichi & Soifon so easily (particularly Yoruichi) ,that’s when I knew those were the 3 strongest capts and when it’s revealed she’s their senpai, I knew she was stronger than them. Wished Kubo showed us her fighting Aizen at central 46, or at least Gin so we get to see some of her power
It was definitely foreshadowing, while having a bit of fun with it at the same time, as from the very beginning of the Shonen Jump BLEACH official power rankings from Tite Kubo himself, Unohana was the third highest ranked in power in BLEACH all areas and aspects amongst all Soul Reapers except Yamamoto and Aizen, even way back then. (Zaraki included, since he hadn’t unlocked his potential yet with her.)
Aizend didnt want to encounter foes he cannot defeat. Thst is why unohana, zaraki, mayuri, byakuya and itchigo was on the different world. He just cant avoid Urahara
I think he could beat Mayuri it would just be an annoyance to deal with him cause of his inventions and wacky shenanigans. And I think he could beat Byakuya but I’m sure he didn’t want to be injured at all and Byakuya would’ve been a challenge. Obviously no mind games work on Kenpachi and Unohana would’ve been just as deadly.
The one thing that always confused me was Aizen at one point after Unohana arrived back in karakura town says something along the lines of "all the captains capable of fighting me have been dealt with" while staring at her
@@split8886lol, and yet, aizen didnt want to challenge her... Aizen is so smart not to fight her, cause unohana might have a chance to kill him, plus bonus she can heal herself....
I feel like unohana really wanted to leave her old menacing self alone, though if there was a vastro Lordis in hueco Mundo that abruptly challenged her,we would of had a glimpse of what we see now.
If I’m going to be honest here, I was never a fan of Shunsui’s dub voice. Same goes for Toshiro as well. This is one of the reasons I like the Japanese sub version a lot more than the dub. Because hearing the sub version is more accurate and I’ve learned to appreciate the Japanese voice actors for Shunsui, Toshiro, Kenpachi, Mayuri and others.
@@xavierstewart5756 I really don't care what version you prefer that's really your choice. I'm just saying his voice got better over time in the English dub because it was annoying at first you're free to like what you like
I always waited to find out who she really was at those little snippets especially I realize when her eyes are open everybody's like nine times more scared of her especially in Waco Mundo where that guy was like yeah no him and all has a little minions
I remember looking at the data books back in the day, and seeing how all her stats were either completely maxed out, or very close to it. I figured everyone was scared because she was insanely powerful, and waited for her to do something epic whenever a new arc started in the manga. The Kenpachi reveal was great, but I wish just wish it was done sooner than TYBW.
It's the quiet ones you worry about. I used to work at a prison and there was a guy who was always pretty quiet and respectful, but spidey sense always tingle when he was around (not a high alert more of a look around feeling). I finally got a chance to see his case file, and sure enough he was a murderer.
@@thesheepfollows2985 not much trouble, and no although you never really saw him hanging around the other guys or at least actively participating in the group

For a long running manga like bleach, it most likely wasn't planned at the start but kubo most likely thought it would be cool if there's a genuine reason outside of comedy for everyone to be terrified of her and for her to emit that kind of atmosphere. Honestly, that's one of the best way to write a character.
In the latest episodes of Everything But the Rain and The Blade is Me there is foreshadowing going back to the first season and even I think like episode 4ish.
It was definitely planned and foreshadowing to a degree, while having a bit of fun with it at the same time, as from the very beginning of the Shonen Jump BLEACH official power rankings from Tite Kubo himself, Unohana was the third highest ranked in power in BLEACH all areas and aspects amongst all Soul Reapers except Yamamoto and Aizen, even way back then. (Zaraki included, since he hadn’t unlocked his potential yet with her.)
I'm sure all cpts, especially the 1st generations past, is basically an open book for everyone in the gotei 13. And with her starting as one of the soul society's most notorious criminals turned first, cpt of squad 11 dubbed "the 1st kenpachi" and the strongest healer. Also, she went through that phase where she wanted to be called unohana of the 8000 styles. Ya, she a problem. Now that she is dead though kenpachi can truly be called kenpachi. Technically, there can only be 1 per generation
As much as I would've wanted to see that fleshed out by Kubo himself, the fact that unohana herself does not always conceal her Reiatsu means that strong opponents who can sense Reiatsu can already guess who's the clear winner in their bouts, and sure enough even Aizen planned to avoid Unohana knowing full well the difference between them had he not have the full advantage of his Shikai. Then again, plot reasons can be a tough thing to discuss with
she figured out aizen's corpse wasn't real and then his whereabouts in the soul society while under aizen's kyoka suigetsu. aizen had no problem taking out toshiro but he did not want to fight unohana. and in one of the filler arcs, reigai unohana, despite being a copy, got mayuri visibly scared when she called the name of her zanpakuto "minazuki". mayuri probably thought she activated her bankai even though she didn't. for context, her shikai and bankai have the same name but have completely different meanings in kanji. in kanji, minazuki means all things end.
Totally noticed this foreshadowing years and years ago when the anime originally ended when I started reading the manga for the TYBW arc and was like holy crap she’s truly a monster
I absolutely love Unohana because it was a typical trope that strong and tough characters are afraid of the respectable lady character bit in Unohana's case, they have a reason to be afraid. Also, Unohana is that meme where the first person perspective is holding a picture of a war veteran and is looking at a gentle lady comforting a crying kid
the regular person feeling her reishi would probably be mind numbing, so any half adept person would be scared shitless when you add her demeanor. Like this person sets of every warning sign in my body yet the calmest smile is being worn. Always loved her character
Hands down best character in the anime. I wish we could have seen more of her real personality rather than just 1 battle, but it was a magnificent battle
Theres one short moment where you see Zaraki and Her bickering and after staring at eachother intensely he immediately decides to look the other way. I'm pretty sure it's not canon tho it was probably one of those after credits shorts y'know the ones where Kon pops up flying over the screen idk it's been a while but i remember seeing it every once and a while when i would re-binge watch bleach oh but one thing i do remember about that scene was that Ichigo was wearing a dog suit.
