In this chapter, we cover some basics for people who are new to rigging in general. If you can rig an IK leg in your sleep you can safely skip this part. The next chapters will be more exciting :)
⚠️NOTES & ERRATA
-I call the little spheres on each end of a bone "nodules". This may not have been the best word choice. Sorry for my English. :-] Officially the one in the thick part of the bone is called "Head" and the one in the thin part is "Tail".
-around 8:29 I ask you to give the elbows and knees of the character a slight bend. This mainly helps the IK constraint figure out which way the limb should bend.

Speaking as someone who can only speak his native language I say your English is excellent. You speak it better than some native speakers I've met! Additionally your use of American expressions such as "stays put" is perfect and adds to the naturalness and ease of following your thoughts. More generally this is a great tutorial so far. I watched Humane Rigging years ago and found it overwhelming. Yours is much simpler and easier to absorb. Thank you very much!
@CGDive

@@artemiasalina1860 Ah, thanks that's encouraging. I had no idea that "stays put" was an American expression lol I am glad you like the tutorial! Humane Rigging goes much deeper into the details of manual rigging. I had to watch it 3-4 times before I started to grasp some of the concepts. It's a great resource but can be overwhelming as you said.

Another thing, I hope you Pin this comment.. It helped me a lot from another video.. @1:49 , instead of clicking on InFront. When you are in OBJECT view, select everything that is NOT your Armature, use Alt---Z to put into X-Ray. Then, click into open space, and select ONLY your Armature, and hit ALT--Z again, turning it off for your Armature. It will say its not in X-ray, but when you switch to EDIT Mode and changeyou switch your viewport shading to SOLID, essentially it makes your entire character mesh see through. and @9:20 , instead of turning in front off, because it already is.. You can simply change your viewport to MATERIAL VIEW, or SOLID, and you can see your character rendered but the bones will not be visible if they are inside the character mesh.

Followed this through! Really enjoyed it. At about the 2:05 mark, copy constraints are shown. When I started manipulating the root rotation, toward the end of this, I noticed that my feet kept pointing the same way in worldspace compared to the other parts of the rig. But, I figured out that you can add a "Copy Rotation" bone constraint, on the feet, targeting the shins, and only using the Z axis. You also want to use "Add" for the Mix so that you can rotate the foot ontop of whatever the shin is doing. I'm sure this is a throw-away rig, before we move on to rigify, but I was happy to be able to fix it on my own, and hope this comment helps others!

Could you please explain, the purpose of choosing Snapping, Incremental at 12:54? I don't know how this function works. Then, I have to press on the Icon, to turn it on? Then, turn it off after I put my Root Bone there?
@CGDive
@CGDive 2 года назад
I just used it to place the tail of the bone flat on the ground. You could do the same by rotating the bone 90 degrees. "Then, I have to press on the Icon, to turn it on? Then, turn it off after I put my Root Bone there?" Yes, in the video I enabled snapping to place the bone precisely, then I turn it off because I didn't need this kind of precision anymore.

I have a question concerning the number of bones you made for the spine. Presumably, if you want the rig to be as simple as possible, you would want each important part of the spine to be represented by a single bone, right? That's where I get confused, as you placed 1 bone for the sacrum region, 1 for the lumbar region, but 2 for the thoracic region, and 1 for the cervical (neck) region. Why so many bones for the thoracic region? Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but I can't be sure. Thanks!
@CGDive
@CGDive 2 года назад
You mean that the rib cage should be represented by a single bone? Feel free to do so. This is a very generalized tutorial to show some basic techniques. It's not "this is how you rig a human". :)

24:20 When I click Symmetrize it appears on the same side of the body 👀 Anything changed in this function since that time or I should click anything else? P. S. I've found out that placing a mesh to the center before rigging is very important. It should have 0 coordinates in X and Y to have its center in the 0 point. That's why Symmetrize didn't work correctly 👀

ctrl+shift+c is not doing anything for me. I read AMD users may have issues because this is also a shortcut for the GPU... Does anyone else have this issue and/or figure out a workaround. Or how can I add the constraint without the short-cut keys?
@CGDive
@CGDive 2 года назад
Instead of the shortcut, you can use the menu Pose > Constraints > Add (with target) You can also add them completely manually by going to the Bone Constraints tab (note the difference between Object constraints and Bone constraints!). In this case, you'll have to add the target manually too. Also, you can probably get rid of the AMD shortcut. These are very annoying :) I don't know how but if there is some AMD app installed, check its settings.

leaving this in case someone else has same issue. after connecting the shin bone to the pole IK my leg only wanted to bend outwards to the side when I moved my foot IK, it drove my crazy for like 10 minutes! turns out the fix was changing the locked axes (Pose Mode>Target shin bone>Bone Properties>Inverse Kinematics) from Y/Z to X/Y (so only Z is available to bend, instead of X like his leg in the video), I found this was because I had to change my pole angle to -180 where as his was -90. if you have this issue you can tell which axis you need to free (X or Z) based on which one is facing to the side of your leg, that one is the axis your leg has to rotate on.

@CGDive
@CGDive 3 года назад
"Bone heat error", right? Yes, this is not a problem with Rigify but with the Auto Weights function in general. Usually has to do with your mesh. The few common causes are: -your mesh has problems like inverted normals, double vertices, disconnected polygons etc -you character consists of multiple meshes by design. That's not a "problem" perse but it is a problem for autoweights. -you character is very small. For some reason that trips Auto Weights over.

what's the difference between rigging this way and adding a Human Meta rig?

This is manual rigging. It's more time-consuming but you can manually add features that Rigify doesn't have.

Selecting multiple bones, pressing Alt and unchecking boxes doesn't work in Blender 3.1. Is there a new way of doing the same thing now?
@CGDive
@CGDive 2 года назад
It does work but your Blender settings may not allow for it. You can right-click and choose "copy to selected". Details here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2ojZdY7bUsA.html

Awesome! Quick question: could that workaround at 23:20 not also have been achieved by unchecking the "inherit rotation" box in either the armature or bone properties tab (I can't remember where it is off the top of my head)
@CGDive
@CGDive 4 года назад
Hey, I checked 23:20 but I am not sure which workaround you mean. I generally don't touch "inherit rotation" and that's not because I don't like it but because I went through "Humane Rigging". There it is said that this setting is good for quick tests but not for final rigs. I just took this is as a truth and I never played around with the setting. Thus I don't understand it well. It's a knowledge gap that I should fill.

@@CGDive Apologies, you start explaining the problem earlier at 22:00, where basically the foot begins to point downwards when you crouch the body. You then unparented the foot and made it copy the location of the lower leg. I'm 90% sure that just unchecking "inherit rotation" with the foot still parented does the same thing - as it will remain parented and therefore copy the location of the lower leg, but retain its pre-existing rotation and not be influenced by the bending of the knee.
@CGDive
@CGDive 4 года назад
@@commandojoe123 Right, got it. Well, what I said in my previous reply is still valid. I learned a long time ago that the solution with constraints is more robust than the one with "inherit rotation". I don't have a deep technical understanding so I just accepted it and that's how I do it :P What do you think? Would you say the "inherit rotation" solution is better?
@commandojoe123
@commandojoe123 4 года назад
@@CGDive Apologies for the delay. Honestly, you're the expert here ^^ it was just a suggestion. Personally, I've never had an issue with unchecking Inherit Rotation - especially when it comes to hand and feet bones, because I found that not doing so meant that their rotation would not stay consistent with my IK controller, leading to some messy scenarios, which is basically the same thing you were fixing here. There may be a technical reason for leaving Inherit Rotation checked that I'm not aware of but touch wood, so far it hasn't cost me. Again, you're the expert and I didn't mean to heckle.

Thank you for the great tutorial. You are a great teacher and I am glad I found your channel. I watched the video the 2nd time and doing it myself but then when i tried to parent my character to the bones. I get an error that say: bone heat weighting failed: find solution for one and more bones. Is it because my character is not symmetrical? coz i tried to parent it with a cube I did not get the error.. I was just curious. Anyway I will continue watching your tutorials.. Thank you again

Hi. This is a very common error with Automatic Weights. It's not because of asymmetry. It just fails sometimes for various reasons (mesh is too high poly or messy, mesh is too small, etc. etc.) I have to make a video on how to deal with this error.
@SimmerPatata

@@CGDive I see.. there are many reasons then.. I tried to check google what's the error all about but I really don't understand 😔 I'll just wait and watch your video.. Thanks for the reply.. ❤

Around 27:00 I'm unable to get the results you get. When I click my CharacterMesh, and shift-click the Skeleton and Ctrl+P>With Automatic Weights, the program spins like it's doing something, but when it's done, moving the bones does not move the mesh. However, I am able to get the 'With Envelope Weights' option to work, but it heavily deforms everything. Not sure how relevant that is.
@iSneakyPewPew

Disregard, I figured it out! My character is made up of several pieces that were joined together. That seemed to be the issue. I Select>All in Edit Mode, and separated them with Mesh>Separate> 'by Loose Parts'. Now the automatic weights works!

Thank you @CGDive - I've just discovered this series. It seems exactly what I am looking for as I start my rigging journey in Blender. I have a question, you mention in the description Rig ANYTHING with Rigify. I wonder, would that also include 2D characters in Grease Pencil too? I'm looking to animate characters in Grease Pencil and wonder if rigging a character is the best way to animate. Thanks again for the excellent tutorials. Farhan

Question: I'm currently rigging a model that I've made for Pyramid Head from Silent Hill, I keep getting this "Bone Heat Weighting: Failed to find solution for one or more bones" I've tried decimating the geometry in the clean up menu, as well as merge by distance. I'm still getting this error and I don't quite understand why. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: It'd be nice to know a solution but I've just resorted to what the video is doing, actually love this channel so far so hope this works! Edit #2: Still have the issue. Edit #3: Oh my god there was a clump of messed up vertices in his head...problem solved and I still love the channel heheh!

Man, I really need to make a video about " "Bone Heat Weighting" error. I have a text that I paste as an answer because I've gotten this question 1 trillion times :) If you don't mind spending some money, you can get the Voxel Heat addon blendermarket.com/products/voxel-heat-diffuse-skinning/?ref=356 It's generally better than Automatic weights and you never get the above error with it. I think its weak spot are fine areas such as closed lips. But other than that it's almost magical. :) Other than that there are a couple of possible reasons for the error. 1. Your mesh has problems. One thing that often helps is to select all vertices and Merge by distance. Also, check for inverted normals. I spoke a bit about this in a recent video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s3n9Umi2Jt8.html 2. Your mesh/character is too small. Automatic weights struggle with small objects. If you can make your object larger it could help. You can make it smaller again after the weights are applied. 3. Your character is made of many different parts. Automatic weights work best with solid meshes. There is no clear solution for this case. You may have to do manual Weight Painting. Here is an example of fixing that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O-5MXyKyyhc.html
