I come back to this one every now and again to remind myself of the steps, especially if I want the flag animation to start from the flag at rest. (You'd think I'd have remembered everything by now, but whatever). Thank you so much for making such an easy-to-follow tutorial.
Instead of changing one of the settings to fix that little problem, you can just go back to frame 0 and press righ key to go forward 1 frame. That usually does it for me
so, me again... followed and applied the steps in the tutorial no problems... however, I have another blender project that I have tried to apply the flag to... as soon as I check the self-collision, the flag no longer reacts to the force (wind) and crumbles badly. Tried changing the object's weight and wind strength, no luck... any suggestions. Unfortunately I cannot add a screenshot. Any assistance will be much appreciated
Sometimes changing the setting resets it but also make sure you are at the start of the timeline. If you don't come right send me a message in my discord channel.
Thanks for the tutorial! But i've encountered a problem where the flag i've used is rotated the wrong way, in this case, rotated vertically instead of horizontally, could you help me with this one? thx
If you go to the physics properties tab under "cache" you'll find the start and end frame. Just increase the end frame to how ever many frames you need :)
This is a great tutorial, however something I noticed when trying it out for myself is that the texture on the flag gets a little "choppy" during the animation.
Just came across this video. Excellent Job! I am trying to export to fbx, but the animation is not being added to the fbx. Do you have a video for that?
Is it a character rig or just an object? Make sure to tick off animation in the export settings for FBX. And where are you important it into? Sometimes some features like deformers won't come over so you need to bake the animation and even then the software you are importing it into might not support some things.
if I import a flag its the wrong way round, so instead of Black, Red, Golden from top to bottom its Black, red, Golden from left to tight. How can I change that?
Great tutorial! The flag I am trying to create is a logo with text on it. Everything you said worked great, however on the other side of the flag, the text is backwards. Is there a way to fix this?
Thank you, All you need to do is make a make a double sided shader using the geometry node using the Back facing output, and use the Texture coordinate node with a mapping node to flip the texture by setting one of the scale values to -1 here is a tutorial to make a double sided shader. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1XjVuyueg7w.html
Not an easy task with a simulation, there are some tutorials out there but I would most likely resort to using a Noise deformer of some kind rather than using a Cloth sim if i wanted to make a loop.
@@ArtInMotionStudios I gotcha. Yeah a lot of those tutorials are a bit confusing to a beginner like me… so what I ended up doing was following this and then cross fading it in Final Cut Pro. Lol. Im zoomed in on the cloth so no one will kno the difference lol
it's a simulation so that's very difficult, you can try turning off gravity and just using turbulence instead of wind and just animating the Rotation of the turbulence field. or instead of cloth use the wave modifier.
No idea depends if it can support the cloth sim. Chances are it would be easier to re texture an existing flag asset that is already in the game editor.
@@ArtInMotionStudios Hey, happy New year. Thanks for responding. The game already have realistic flags added by the game developer, Digitalmindsoft, but I wanted to import flags that I made with Blender into the Gem engine files that are hard to open and insert the flag files from Blender. Usually they are WinRAR files. So, I don't know what files type Blender generates. Digitalmindsoft are staying tight lipped about this. They don't even tell me what program they use, is it Blender of another program, e.g. Silver light, Maya, etc. I've been trying to do this for 9 year. Each time I do it, it becomes a failure.
why when i convert and save the glb file, and open it, my animation doesn't work . in Blender it works but in glb doesn't . can you explain me plaease what should i do for this , thanks a lot !
Hi, I was following along your tutorial, thanks for sharing it. I started out with another older tutorial from Andrew Price, who created square faces before subdividing the flag x times. I am playing around with the values in blender 2.92 beta. I am getting artifacts in the size of single square faces in shading mode. It looks like single faces flip or something similar. I wonder why I see this problem. Maybe someone has a hint of how to fix that? Thanks (PS: It seems to appear when the flag flaps that much I can see the backside of the polygons.)
Sounds like you might have double faces. Or the normals are flipped. Might be easier to start from scratch. But you can try this go into edit mode, select all a by press A on your keyboard the. Press M for merge and select by distance. Could also be normals select all again then press Shift N and that should fix any normals. Also make sure if you have a solidify Modifier to delete it or make sure it is after the cloth modifer If it looks strange still just start over and be careful of extruding by mistake. That should fix it
@@ArtInMotionStudios Thanks for your help. The model seems fine, the faces are all ok. In Cycles it looks kind of ok. Maybe its a display bug on Mac? I guess, I still have some values not ok and the flag folds too much unto itself at times. As I did not see any artifacts on both tutorials, I must have done something .
@@ArtInMotionStudios thanks again, I think I got it. It was the backfaces, they showed the problems. The texture that I use has no alpha, but the material/settings/blendmode was set so Alpha Blend by default. It change it to opaque and the problem is gone.
the one side being invisible is a limitation of Unity, to get rid of that you might need to add thickness using the solidify modifier, might work. as far as importing the animation goes, i am not sure if it is possible to import simulated animation into unity Check this out. blenderartists.org/t/export-cloth-simulation-animation-to-fbx-file/1233863/10
Make sur3 you are in edit mode, You can also click on the edge menu in edit mode, you will find the subdivide option. Also make sure your setting are set to left click select in your preferences.
I have a problem. When I put in the texture I had created with photoshop than the texture is to width. And when I scale the texture that a circle is a circle than there are more than one circles on the flag. I think the texure is too small or the flag to big, but when you put it in than there wasn't thsi problem.
Now I want to wave that flag around. I parent the flag to the pole, hit play, and the flag moves down to the bottom of the pole and no long blows in the breeze, and when I move the pole, the flag doesn't move along with it like it should. What is happening? How do I fix this?
@@ArtInMotionStudios I managed to fix it, but I'm still not sure what was going on. I couldn't get the flag parented to the flagpole correctly. It would move to the origin point of the flagpole when I parented it. If I moved the flagpole's origin, the flagpole would move so that the origin point was at the world center. Nothing was happening as expected. I reset everything undid all the parenting and started over. A tutorial showing how to do the parenting and pivot points would be helpful. The flag's movement has to be at the point where a hand holds it, but the flag has to be parented at the top of the pole, not the pole's pivot point. I had to use an empty.
Hi! Thanks a lot for your tutorial, very helpful and well explained. i got a question: When i copy paste my flag in another project, I move it to the desired place but when I press play the flag goes back to the initial place where it was pasted. Do you know how I can correct that? thanks
My flag would stop flapping once it hits the 250 fps mark. I have 600 frames all in all and my frame rate is at 60 so i get 10 seconds. What's happening wrong with it if anyone knows?
*_Can someone please help! I'm following this tutorial fine and when I click Tab to exit out of edit mode my plane disappears. Help is much appreciated._*
you litarally saved me before i got spanked my mother because i have a project of making a 3d flag and i forgot about it and u teach me how to do it thanks so much!
Hello Art In Motion Studios, I would like to know how to use this flag with the animation in Unity and what is the easiest way to record this animation on Blender and then use it in Unity.... please help me... would be very nice. thanks in advance.. I like that tutorial.. Well I made the flag.. ad it helped me.. but could you please make a video about that.. so I could understand how to do this.. would also be nice if you would text me here.. thanks!!
very odd but after you add the cylinder don't click anything else or that dialog box will vanish. it should be there. but you can also try clicking on file >defaults > load factory settings.
Make sure to go to the start of the timeline and use contrains to hold the flag in place. Go through the instructions again sounds like you missed something.
Could be a number reasons, Make sure you are at the start of the timeline and also make sure that the pole is not intersecting with the flag or too close to the pole. at the start , try apply the transforms as well. Could also be that you changed the modifiers after baking the cloth. Often easier to start again to see what went wrong than trying to fix it.
