NOTE: In 2.82, Copying and Pasting multiple mirrored/flipped frames at the same time sometimes doesn't work. It used to work in 2.79, 2.8, and 2.81. If you're using 2.82 and don't know what's going on, you'll have to copy and paste flipped keys 1 at a time. We'll just have to pray that they fix that in 2.83. Can anyone using 2.83 beta confirm if this has been fixed or not?
@TheJumpButton
@TheJumpButton 4 года назад
Seems like the multi paste flipped works fine in 2.83, just make sure you have the bones for both sides selected.
@TheJumpButton
@TheJumpButton 4 года назад
You also need at least one keyframe on each bone, or else the animation data will be applied to the same bone except for being flipped on all axes.
@Owiko7
@Owiko7 4 года назад
I have a problem where sometimes when animating my characters, the bones will take the long way to reach the next key frame even though I moved them a little bit. For example if the wrist bone is supposed to rotate 15 degrees between two key frames, it will instead rotate the opposite direction and go 345 degrees around to reach the same position.
@rohitaug
@rohitaug 4 года назад
2.83 is no longer in beta, it was released a few days ago. You should probably get it since it is the LTS version, it will be the most stable version for a while so it is perfect for big projects.
@TheJackalxy
@TheJackalxy 4 года назад
@@Owiko7 That's a problem related to the orientation of the axes. Identify the rotation axis and try inserting manually its complementary (eg.360-x or x-360) in the panel. The fastest/correct way btw is to change the direction of the quaternion (Q). I don't remeber exactly how that works but there are a lot of videos in youtube that explain how Q works. In some cases is just changing a + to a - and viceversa. Hope that helps

after i finish rigging something i always like to pose it in a "splash art" kind of pose before even thinking about animating it, solely to see the character in a form that telegraphs the personality of the character. like if the character is hot-headed, ill pose them in a way that one look at them will tell you that personality trait. if they are snarky, ill tilt their head up and make them lean against a wall or soemthing. its the best feeling right after actually watching a final product animation, since it gives you all the info you need and the spirit to animate said character and how to fit the animation to the personality.

I spent basically all of yesterday messing around with rigging and animating a tail and I want to share what I have found: Because fully animating tail sway is a lot of work, I tried both wiggle and spring bones. Wiggle is easier to set up but jiggle has better effects. Something to note is that setting influence in the spring constraint has a different (and in my case better) effect to changing influence in the spring bones menu. The only problem with that is that the constraint settings reset whenever you stop the spring bones. So that is tail sway pretty much done. Next up is manually controlling the tail. You can't manually control it due to spring being a constraint, but you can use other constraints. Spline IK on a curve path gets really nice and easy to control tails, however spline IK overrides spring bones. What I did to work around this is create a duplicate tail with spline IK and deform off, then used copy transforms on the actual tail bones to mimic the duplicate bones. This means I can easily change the base tail shape to a curve while still getting the automatic sway and bending of spring bones. Easy tail animation once set up. Also, applying hook empties to the curve path allows me to set keyframes, animating the curve itself. There are a few bits to improve still: -The constraint influence resets if spring bones is disabled and is a pain to fix. -A way to change the influence for all bones at once and during an animation would be nice, so that I can quickly change how much it keeps my chosen form over the spring effect. -Setting the frame to 0 doesn't reset the spring bones effect, you need to drag it further back to return to normal or turn spring bones off and on again. This isn't too bad, but forgetting it can lead to confusion and the effect becomes bigger for longer tails with more bones. I'm pretty happy with this setup and hopefully others can make use of or improve upon it. TL:DR of how I set it up: 1. Setup spring bones on the tail to get the desired sway effect when moving. 2. Create duplicate bones and spline IK these to a curve path. Use hook empties to manipulate the curve more easily and allow you to set keyframes. 3. Copy transform the tail bones to the duplicate bones. 4. You should end up with a tail that has automatic sway while also allowing easy animation through a curve.

You could also just add in a NURBS curve or similar, attach said object to teh nurbs curve, and just animate the curve as you want

GENERAL TIP: if your animations don't look great, look into the Principles of Animation for a better grip on the art. Most Principles are applicable to any kind of animation, not solely 2D cel animation. It's also really helpful to use reference footage, professionals do it too all the time. Set up your phone camera to record you doing an action or two you want to animate. You'll feel goofy the first few times but try to shake it off and embody the character you're animating. How does he walk? What does she wave like? How would he do this kick? Is she more upbeat, or cool? As a 2D animation nerd learning 3D since I can't draw for shit, it's absolutely mind-blowing how simple this is by comparison. Like the only way 2D is ever this easy with just keyframes and easing, is when the result looks like fucking garbage- think every mainstream American adult cartoon made in the past 15 years or so.

Good video! Pro tip though, when animating looped animations, the first and last key frame should NOT be the same. The last frame should be one frame short of the first frame. If they are the exact same, the result in an odd pause moment. It's not that noticable, but a good example of a weird pause is the Pikachu animation he used in this video where you can distinctly tell where the animation begins and ends it's loop
