It really should have it's own panel with a more visual way of working. That could be a Light Panel once Light Linking is added to the mix.

Light linking is supposed to be coming some time in the future, but they needed to do light groups firsts since they needed to do some Cycles rewrites if I recall correctly. I think you can get around the fact you can't link a light to one object by using a cryptomatte in compositor and isolating that light group to the cryptomatte you want.

If I recall the Cycles X refactor already toggled that, so it's a matter of building on top.

That light linking from Maya, omg. I'm missing that one too much in Blender. Also after seeing the Cinema rope physics update...I wish that Blender development would focus more on essential features instead of constant geometry node updates.

Light linking existed in the early parent to Maya "TDI Explore" back in the early 1990's along with their "Interactive Photorealistic Renderer" or IPR. Linking lights to objects is a really powerful tool and needs to be integrated into blender. Wish I knew how!

Cool.. Used to work with Maya and I miss that feature.. BTW... In the Blender compositor you could switch to the Add blending mode in the mix node to combine the lights correctly..

Blender actually had this long before Maya, back when Blender had Layers, then they took that away.

This is nice but the most important feature the Blender renderers are still missing is Light Linking. For an important project recently I needed to use Octane for this. Also looked at E-Cycles and Redshift

If I want to render once and have multiple lighting scenarios I just use e-cycles. Way easier! Still good that it’s now in blender. 👍🏻

Why blender 3.1 and 3.2 alpha, there is no save add-on data feature like in version 3.0 from add-on in version 2.93?! 😭😭😭 because life is very important when we install a lot of add-ons and we don't need to install it twice. For example, like Botaniq, or True Terrain, it takes a long time, so we don't have to install the new version.

isnt there a way to just mask a specific light from a certain object like with an eye dropper without having to render the scene TWICE to composite it later? im asking but i already know the answer (from what ive researched - pls enlighten me if you know something to disprove me) - you cant do such a simple task in blender :(

I don't understand. Light groups and Light linking are such an old feature for other softwares. These were introduced maybe 10 years ago. Why did it take so much time for Blender to implement just one of the two features mentioned above?
