My man, this is some fine advice. About three years ago I thought I'd have an animated film out by now. But my goals weren't realistic - I was biting off more than I could chew, while trying to balance a full-time job and making regular RU-vid crafting videos. Add to that the feeling that "This needs to be QUALITY", and I just froze up. You have given some *VALUABLE* advice here. And mannn I like your style so much. I have downloaded Blender every few years, since it first came out, and I always wind up going back to the old 3D software I'm comfortable with. You are the guy who makes me want to actually break down and LEARN that mess. Thank you for what you do!

From a filmmaker, let me explain simply this, 1a) think of a clever premise, character, concept & outline it. 1b) write your 5-10min script. or longer if you want to animate forever. 2) Draw your STORYBOARDS. Shot for shot, so that you don't model 1000 things, and only end up showing 1/4 of it. 3) Do things only towards camera in other words. 4) Pre-production (build assets), Production (build animation), Post-Production (build lights & effects) 6) Use Adobe Premiere or After Effects to edit the film. (putting the rendered scenes on a timeline).
@Real_Genji
@Real_Genji 3 года назад
Could you explain number 3 to me in more detail
@josephvanwyk2088
@josephvanwyk2088 3 года назад
@@Real_Genji Just like a movie camera on a film set, your character walks towards it or away from it, or camera follows a subject or reveals a subject. The camera is the most important frame especially when Point of View is introduced. So it doesn't help you build things behind the camera or do animation behind / next to camera that you will never see. There's one video on youtube where the guy builds a underwater cave with divers. Everything in his camera frame fits perfectly as he follows the deep ocean divers, but as soon as you click out of camera, all the cave rocks, plants etc are placed for camera. Everything is done via perspective and illusion.

Forget perfectionism is the thing I'm struggling with the most at the moment.... and this is just with walk cycles. I've just been kinda stuck doing just this cycle, trying to improve it multiple times, I have video references, and I feel like I've gotten to a good point, but I just keep working on it without doing other animations I need to get to where I want to be...
@echsengenosse1351
@echsengenosse1351 3 года назад
What helps me personally most with that is to "sketch" the animation first. It doesn't have to be perfect from the beginning. Start with a rough animation of what you want to happen and then move on to the next step for the scene (lighting, props, other characters) and put the scene together on how you would imagine it. That helps a lot with compisition and stuff, but also helps to remind yourself that not every detail has to be perfect. Once the scene is sketched, go back and refine the parts that need to be refined. In a moving film you get away with a lot. And once the scene in roughly in shape, I personally stop worrying about every single detail and focus in the things that are important
@Crakygamez
@Crakygamez 3 года назад
Yup...can agree. Even in 3d you could make the strong poses in each keyframes. Make it linear first and just dont bother with how smooth it looks. Then after that. You can play with the easing and frames positions to create small details on the walk cycle. At least thats how i do it sometimes (still learning).

This is what I NEEDED to hear. I left the 3D entertainment industry to work in a more stable stress-free environment, but I wanted to continue my craft of 3D/animation. Several years later, and I haven't done much of anything worth sharing. Just a few things here and there, but nothing substantial. Several things held me back: lack of motivation, analysis paralysis, the paywall to use certain 3D programs, and the tutorial loop to fill my lack of knowledge. Well, you motivated me to learn Blender since I already have a SkillShare acct. That takes care of 3 things that were holding me back. Hopefully, I can get over the analysis paralysis part and actually produce something. haha

Pretty solid advice. I have very minimal experience with filmmaking, but from what I've learned, pre-production might just be the most essential part of the process. If youre going into the film and you immediately start working on random small details, you're almost bound to get burnt out and/or confused with the overall direction of the project. Also, this is unrelated, but I LOVE the shot you created at 6:34, the style is so cool. Good vid man, lots of helpful pointers
@wadalapichu4873

also another thing that i think its important, if you dont like doing something (it could be anything like texturing, animating, rigging, or anything else), and you know someone who does, i think that is a good idea to work with them. Not only you would be only doing the parts that you like, you would be working with someone else which i feel like in those cases its really good!:)

This is good advice, not just for making films, but also for any creative endeavour. I've been making children's books since my best friend had her first child 14 years ago. I had made him a book for his first birthday (it was really not good at all, but she loved it because it was from the heart), now I have continued making a book for all my friends and family's babies' first birthdays. So basically, when a baby is born, I give myself one year to write the book (where the baby is the main character). Every book has been better than the last and, at this point, they look like any book you'd find in the children's section of the book store. But it took me 14 years to get to this point. I still want to get them published at some point. I'm terrible with that sort of thing (I have social anxiety and the idea of the whole process terrifies me). But I feel like I have to redo most of the books, especial my first few which were made on Microsoft Paint and drawn with the mouse. It was really quite awful. What I really want is an iPad Pro with Procreate! It's not in my budget right now. I have a drawing tablet, but my computer isn't good enough to run the drawing programs for it. I feel like I'll have these books in a file on my computer for years and never make anything of them (aside from printing off one book per kid). I just need to take the steps and just do it.

Love this video. I myself attempted to created my own animated web-series based on the Halo games. The fact that I even finished it was a miracle, it took me 4 years. It was just under an hour's worth of animation overall. I couldn't agree more with the perfectionist point. That kind of perfectionism is justified when the animation is a couple seconds long, but when you want it to be a decent length, it's okay to cut corners. I think another point I'd make is depending on what you want to make, it's okay that the animation itself doesn't look great if the priority is storytelling and not visuals. In my case, the animation was only really there to service the plot, and wasn't there to be a visual spectacle, so overall it seemed to work just fine.

This is great advice and at such a great time. I am starting my 4th year film this next month and have just been overwhelmed, as I too have massive expectations I have placed on myself. Last year I tried to make a film, and ended up just biting off way more that I can chew (hair systems, 3 main characters, etc) and never finished it. This year I am going to focus on a more simple character design and layout just to make sure I get it done. At the end of the day, I feel like it is more important to have things you can show for all the work you've done than create the perfect piece. So good, thanks.

Great video! I just finished my short film Stay, an original story inspired by The Last of Us. The full production took an entire year for a 7 minute short film, most of that being in post. I'm a Hollywood VFX artist, but we actually used Blender and Substance Painter to create photorealistic Clickers and Infected for the film. Deadlines are so important. I missed nearly all of them... but it keeps you on track towards actually finishing. You really helped me get up to speed on Blender and your eye for detail is insane. Very recognizable. I really struggled to finish my arena video project a while back and spent way too much time trying to make the assets perfect, while learning to use the actual tools. Eventually I gave up on the short story idea and went with an animated visual, which I was still pleased with, but felt it could have been so much more. But the lack of experience, being stuck in tutorial loop, and being a perfectionist, and not having enough time, really made it a struggle. Glad I didn't give up on it though, and I'd like to revisit the short story idea in the future.

Very well said! I like how you put so much emphasis on your own personal experience. People can just say things but you clearly have learned a great deal and have a ton of experience in what you're talking about. I give you a lot of credit in pushing forward with your short film! I'd like to make one myself someday (I've done live-action but never animation). The main things keeping me from doing that are time and the bar set to high by everyone else. It's hard not to compare yourself to everyone else especially when youtube is involved and if I made something, no one would see it because of the algorithm. Keep up the good work!

That’s a good start; I would highly suggest that new film makers make a short… short. Like 1 minute narrative. Limiting the amount of time to tell the story keeps the scope of the project at a bare minimum and just keeps things simple. Obviously visuals are nice and all but they really don’t mean much if you miss a deadline. Heck I would highly suggest doing a 48-72 hour competition. Which does seem like insanity, but it does help focus people onto getting past the blank slate.

I have done 13 short films in 6 years. And boy I can make a short film in my sleep right now. My advice to anyone who plans to make a short film. Don't fuss about knowing everything and making it great at least in the beginning. My short films have always helped me level up my skills in such a short period of time. My first one was to understand the production process, made it completely 2d on a glass coffee table in one week. Wasn't the best thing ever, but it taught me a lot. After that was to master a 2d animation software, and then thereafter was to really push my animation skills. most of my stuff has been 2d, and I'm currently working on a graphic novel to take my storytelling on another level and be able to tell a cohesive longer story. Which is much harder than people actually think. After which I plan to go back on 3d. After a while, and bring all my animation, storytelling and art style into a distinct film with an identity of it's own. Its a journey, but don't take more than 3 months to make your short film. Especially the first three. Don't use complex software or hardware. The reason why is, you want to experiment and develop a visual and storytelling style that fit you. To do that you have to create a lot of stuff. Perhaps one day, I'll open a YT channel with a better name and talk about these stuff. Until then listen to shotty here

Sometimes its bad, sometimes we oursleves wonder how we pulled something off, butone thing we always keep in mind is 'its for us'. Doing it only for yourself and with what you have really helps, don't do thinking that you are doing it for presenting to an audience. Know what you can and cannot do. Limitations push ideas.

I mean i could go into how these tips are helpful, but can we just talk about how your blender b-roll looks fantastic.. i love the organic clay / stop motion / miniature world look you have going on!

I'm not a 3d Artist (of any sort... I can't do Blender OR any kind of pottery/clay work to save my life lol) but this actually has some super useful tips for long term artistic projects in general. I super love the idea of making template/repeatable personal assets as a way to both build your personal tools and create small works of art at the same time! Like a homework assignment that gives you a finished product as well

I make short films about Kerbal Space Program and I can not stress how much it helped me to make a storyboard or animatics. Exactly as Shotty mentioned, I don't know how to draw, so I make shotlists and then I create a storyboard with Blender using rough 3D elements. The storyboard or animatics is, arguably, the step where you'll save the most time; SO MAKE A STORYBOARD.

This is great advice! I'm making a 2D short film, though. I have the script and am making the shot list and storyboards simultaneously (I heard you were supposed to do that?) But that's just another way to break the process into manageable chunks! I love the idea of creating a "look" for the project; I must admit I hadn't considered that but after hearing this I'm definitely going to do it after the storyboards!! I'm also going to do some auditions for the characters. I've been studying camera movements and stuff, too. Having deadlines is a great point as well! I have SO much to learn about Blender and Grease Pencil but luckily I'm an optimist! The storyboards will probably take 3 months and teaching myself 2d animation will take even longer, but as long as I have the end goal in sight, and a deadline, I'm super hopeful I can make it a reality!! 💪

I'm not a 3D artist nor will I ever become one, but to be honest, a lot of these points are so well crafted that they work for gamedev as an example! Planning out, getting to a good rhythm, and prioritizing what's important in your life is very, VERY important not to burn out on gamedev (I personally burnt out for half a year...) So, thanks for putting the thoughts I had before that I couldn't articulate into a well made video!

It's very funny because I can relate to many things you told (especially the lookdev Part). I made a half-complete short Film for university last year and my biggest issue is that I still didnt figure out the visuals completely. However I think I'll leave it as it is and start working on the next one or else I'll geht stuck in an endless correction loop... I will definitely recommend this Video to everyone I know who is planning to make a short film.

I've recently begun taking up on a shortfilm which i started in 3dsmax but was never able to finish because of all the rendering , compositing and Import-Export overhead. Every camera shot needed multiple folders and several programs involved. That's been 4 or 5 years since I gave up on it.. Now with blender Eevee and greasepencil I can do 90% of the scenes in the viewport undistracted of harddisc space ,slow Previews, and render folders full of PNG files.

Solid advice man! I want to create a short film about a Super-Powered-Action-Fighting-Mighty-Morphin-Robot-Space-Man but that's way too much for me right now. So I made a little onion with a smiley face and I'm learning a ton with him! 💎

About asset usage. If you feel obliged to do it all yourself, just use premade assets as placeholders to get a better idea of where to put things.

I’ve recently started trying to make a mod for Rimworld. The coding part is easy but I need to learn how to do art. I’ll take some of this advice and apply it to my mod and futures mods. After all, a mod is almost like a “short game” so I feel your steps can help for any project really

I don't plan to create any film in Blender, but I want to create good models, scenarios and objects. I started to study 3d four months ago and as far i go, I try to make a rendered scene with my models, objects and new knowledges. My fellas said that I must calm down, but for me, is good to make ''final projects''. Thank you by the video and tips.

I've been working on a comedy series using Poser characters and Moho 2d animations for...oh...about.....TEN years! I do at least have 3 episodes and a funny short review animation I came up with. Moho has a site that sponsors a contest where you have one month to complete and submit your animation this is a great way to keep using the software. Blender should have a site for this as well. Just give a direction what type of scene or something and just be creative...of course entering these contests would keep me from doing my series, but......oh well, The learning as you go would be invaluable!! (to your point set yourself a deadline)
