It is expected that you have some understanding of how Blender works, so of course if you find quicker/more efficient ways to do things then go wild. The purpose of this video is not aimed at how to use Blender specifically, but more about what creative decisions you can make!
If you end up with a gorgeous render then that is the most important thing here :)

Totally agree on the *not* cheating aspect of using premade 3D models. Kris, I love your example of the photographer, who isn't expected to build all the furniture in the room they've been hired to photograph. I think of it as, if someone hires an Interior Designer, they certainly don't expect the Interior Designer to build all the furniture, paint all the paintings, sculpt the sculptures, engineer the electronic equipment like TV's, etc. That would be ludicrous, and so is people accusing ArchVis artists of "cheating" by using premade assets.

Anyone who wastes time making all their own assets when they are available already to make life easier shouldn't be doing this as a business because they obviously have no idea how energy equates to money and thats a waste energy 100% when there is no need to do it. If I were a client and I found out someone chose to model everything themselves when they did it need to which would equate to a much larger cost if be pretty angry with them for warting my money.

I would love to see a comparison workflow one day with two people doing the same project and talking about each step on the two softwares. For example at first with the dwg, Max can import it natively, with scale options, wich layers to import, merging them or not etc.

@imeshh
@imeshh Год назад
Hi, that is interesting. I do know that there is a bit of a lag when initially loading the assets, but there is now a HUGE decrease in time for loading thumbnails etc (almost instant). We do now have a much better folder structure system which is a lot more forgiving compared to our old version which meant you needed the assets in a very specific structure. This is far better but perhaps takes a bit more time to load. Can you remember the version you had last? Was it the old one with the specific folder structure? If so I'll try and dig it out for you

Hi there, just installed the Asset manager, but can't get the paths to work and thumbnails to show?? anyone else have this issue?
@imeshh
@imeshh Год назад
This is a common issue. Blender is always trying to add the path relative, often with portable versions of Blender. Easy fix, if you go to the preferences panel inside Blender for the asset manager. If you click the folder icon to find the asset path, once inside the file browser inside Blender click the gear icon in the top right corner and untick/tick relative (sorry not at PC at the moment so I cant rmemeber which is enabled by default). OR, instead of clicking the folder icon to find the asset path, go to the Windows File explorer, find your asset library and COPY the file path from windows file explorer and PASTE it into the asset manager preferences panel. This works every time so i'm sure it will fix it
@KID_LAT
@KID_LAT Год назад

Things I'd like to add: 1) Setup a template file so that all the organizational stuff is consistent throughout works. Should include some cameras bound to frames, and the passes you'll typically end up working with in post. For me that includes cryptomatte, shader AOVs, and Light Groups as well as the usual stuff if I want to do selective denoising. 2) I prefer to have both Cavity options enabled for all viewports, which helps separate the objects and add some depth. 3) Don't cheat too much with "not gonna see it anyway", you know the client are going to ask for an angle later. For the same reason, texture repeats are my main nemesis. 4) For walls, floors, columns, and ceilings, I prefer to work with object coordinates over UV, because of the chance client require accurate scale representations. Similarly, if doors and windows use textures, I make sure to randomize the texture lookup (if generic, non baked textures are used) to avoid fully identically looking assets. 5) For curtains, I prefer to save out a few positions as shape keys to maintain the overall volume properly. Simply adjusting x scale quickly shows its limits. 6) For lights with reduced spread, consider using collections with two lights; one strong with reduced spread, and one weak with no spread. The latter works for the camera and reflections since the lights glass/diffuser/translucent surface will still light up, just weaker than the focused light. 7) Render at higher resolution not only to preserve denoiser detail, but also downscale with sharpening to gain back details lost to the pixel filter. 8) Persistent data, I've had it ruin jobs due to dicing rate (adaptive subdivision/microdisplacement) not being recalculated for different camera views. 9) Bump maps, leave it to strength 1 and adjust distance, with a math/divide node it necessary. You want the bump output to produce the same change in normals as real displacement would. 10) I prefer to get as much tweaks as possible done in Blender, and I also use Blenders own Fog Glow and Streaks using the Glare compositor node. Use shader AOV and Cryptomatte to limit the size that goes into Streaks, using the full illumination surface tends to be too much. The *ONLY* post edit I do is some selective tone mapping if required, and always sharpening of source, downscale, and sharpening for output. When you do projects lasting months with tens of iterations (our systems change, and customer furnituring and layout changes all the time, with many changing camera angles), you'll know why. 11) For beveled edges, don't forget about the bevel node. While real bevels are by far the best for closeups, the node does allow you to add some noise to it. 12) Plain wall backsplash? Think the architect might have some issues with that. 13) For the aliased edge on the kitchen lamps, use a lower emission strength for camera (and sharp glossy?) rays. 14) One thing I rarely see properly addressed in tutorials are brushed/satin (also directional), matte, hazy, and polished metal surfaces. Sure, everyone can do a pot by now, but what about refrigerators, sinks and armatures, picture frames, glass wall assemblies with these kinds of detail where you might want to think about proper direction and tangents where radial no longer works. 15) If you have lots of glass in your scene where the edge is showing (say the edge of a glass door), consider upping glossy/refraction counts to about 64 to really kick off that green absorption. Depending on the glass, consider treating the edge differently wrt roughness and bump to break those "light streaks" off.

Building this was is not a good way to build. If they ever requested an exteriro shot tou would be screwed. Why wouldnt you just build the walls as full inner and outer walls instead of assuming it wont be seen anyway. Thats the worse way to do stuff because when it all of a sudden needs to be seen you just shot yourself in the hands and caused yourself a world of problems by being lazy. An architect would never leave walls out because they wont be seen.
@imeshh
@imeshh 5 месяцев назад
Well it depends on the client. In 100s of renders and clients I always asked specifically beforehand what is required. Usually if they need exterior shots then yeah i'd model more. But quite often they would require hotel rooms/apartment buildings where we would never do an exterior anyway, so this is the workflow we worked with purely for speed. This method can easily be scaled up to huge apartment complexes and it means a lot of walls that will never be seen will not be built which saves on polycount on huge projects. But I understand the customer may change their mind, but then I charge them more for the time. But maybe i'm not understanding the problem, it would take literally 10 seconds to make the outside wall in this case? You just connect the outside open ends and it makes the wall.. imgur.com/a/DHBiYZt
