In this tutorial, we will talk about the changes in Blender 3.0 and NUKE 13.0v5 and fix the Cryptomatte problems some of you have been fighting with. Also I go though the process of exporting Multilayer EXRs from Blender to NUKE again and show how to make EXR sequences for every pass separately. Then I demonstrate you a fast Blender Add-on, which builds your export node trees in the Blender compositor automatically for you and how to generate a World Position Pass in Cycles X.

This tutorial series „Blender for Production“ focuses on Blender as a full Production Suite for (Indie) 3D- & VFX Productions. In these tutorials, I will explain how to work with the different Modules of Blender and how they are connected. I will give you an introduction to the specific functionalities, but also the production context and workflows, which can help you to use Blender in your productions.
As a Senior 3D & VFX Trainer, Helge Maus teaches 3D- & VFX Applications for 20 years. His focus lies on VFX, but he also works with many studios and agencies from different visualization areas. He focuses on Houdini FX, Blender, and NUKE for his daily work and training.

awesome video! please make a video on “blender to nuke accurate DOF and Motion blur workflow” like how to set up nuke nodes to get accurate DOF and motion blur, which one goes first (dof? or motion blur?) another thing i was facing was: no depth data for volume objects from blender no motion data for volume objects from blender is there any solution to that?

Regarding to the addon, if I press render animation it doesnt take the change of the layer name (combined - rgba) any idea why?

Hello :) Thanks a lot for this great video ! When I import my blender exr into nuke, the color space is totaly off. You seem to not get this problem ( I use filmic in nuke ) DO you have a solution ?

Hi, How do you save the image? Thougth the animation output or through a file node in the compositor? Normally Blender doesn't embed the Colorspace in MultiLayer EXRs and so it should be correct. It would be intersting to find the difference in your workflow.

is it necessary to use all of the passes ? I exported a 400 frame composition in 4k exr and halfway I noticed that it ate up all of my storage. i am considering exporting images as png in separate layers but that's gonna be a hassle in future composition when I have many footages (its not a big deal but multilayers are much faster.) i noticed in the video the only layers checked in your passes was dif col and glasscol, would there be a way to just use those layers? like subtract the dif col from rgba and then add it back later with (e.g. changed hue). rgba --> shuffle --> [dif col] (subtract) --> [dif col] (add) . idk if this would work I have to try it after rendering

Sure, there is a technique which is names Subtractive compositing. Works for some cases.

How can we render overscan image in blender for later compositing in nuke?

No, still not out-of-the-box. You have to calclulate it manually. Here is a good thread for that how to do that and also a feature request. Please upvote it ;-) blender.community/c/rightclickselect/pkfbbc/?sorting=hot

Thanks a lot. pass work correct in nuke by default? in last tutorial we change some stuff ( blender "z" direction)
@pixeltrain3d
@pixeltrain3d 2 года назад
No, the alignment of your scene is still rotated (Blender's Z direction). But as we now have a good Position Pass from Blender I would do the adjustments of the scene in NUKE itself. I explained the fundamentals for that before. Do you think this is enough clear after watching or should I do also this again now? Not sure ...

The work that is being done in Blender is extraordinary, but this still feels a very convoluted workflow to export passes / aovs. You shouldn't have to go into the compositor at all for exporting passes. This seems counter-intuative. I think it would be much better if passes stayed in in the side tab and it was a series of checkboxes and if you need to rename passes, that's where you rename. Or a dilalog box for cycles renderer appears like in maya for arnold. Maybe this isn't possible with the blender architecture but it's a shame if that's the true because this still feels a way off.

Hi Georg, meanwhile in Blender 3.0 Beta (build from some days ago) it's much easier. If you want only to have a nice multipass with working Cryptomatte you can set it up in the Output properties and render from there (Best ANimation 1-1 frame). The developers have fixed their renaming of the layers now, so that they are now compatible with EXR standard :-) Works out of the box. Downside, you still get the ViewLayer within the Passnames, but this isn't not really a big problem, if you can rely on the passnames. But I still prefer the compositor output workflow, because I shuffle passes around.
