Blender on the M3 Max

I put the new MacBook Pro with the base M3 Max chip (14/30) though a Blender workout. We'll check out Cycles and it's new support for hardware ray tracing, run complex simulations, and get an overall sense for viewport and application performance.

Honestly one of the best M3 Max videos, why does the algorithm not bump this up? All other reviews i see use the same shitty blender model, no physics or hair animations, just totally useless review videos. But this....well done Matt, and thanks!

Great review. In all other channels, video rendering speeds of MacBooks are always tested and 3D tests are neglected. Thank you for this nice review and I would love to hear your advice. I use a windows notebook and since the system is old (9 years) I will buy a new computer. I'm undecided between 4090 and m3 max. What is your advice for 3D designs + other areas of use (except gaming)? I know the windows side, but what kind of problems might I experience if you buy m3 max? Thanks 🙏

This is faster than my 4070 desktop, and even faster than my 4090 work station. Mainly because on PC, the geometry loading section cost way too much time when MacBook is already rendering scenes. My M2 Max chip is also pretty OK on the final frame rendering, but it is mushy when doing look dev, probably because there's no ray tracing tech in this chip. Wow, very cool comparison! Thanks for sharing~ FYI, the 3.5 splash screen (at 1:40 in this video) is about 15 seconds on M2 Max MacBook Pro / 18 seconds on 4070 / 10 seconds on 4090 the sheep scene, using the same 100 samples with denoise, is about 1minute 27 seconds on M2 Max MacBook Pro / 34 seconds on 4070 / 19 seconds on 4090

@matthewgrdinic1238
@matthewgrdinic1238 6 месяцев назад
Not mentioned in the video, but their was a strange sliding scale with performance - at 60 samples and lower the Max was actually *faster* than my 3080 using Optix - greater than 60 and the 3080 gradually becomes faster. As the 4090 is around 2x the performance of the 3080 it's absolutely possible the Ultra chip will indeed match the 4090's performance at lower sample counts. That's not at all what I would have expected a few years back. It also gives me hope that whatever odd performance hit we take at higher sample counts is fixed.
@SteveW928
@SteveW928 6 месяцев назад
@@matthewgrdinic1238 That is great news! I'm primarily concerned with a new machine being usable, and then hopefully somewhat competitive. It doesn't have to be as fast or faster than a top PC GPU rig, but it also can't lag too badly, etc. It looks like the M3 is finally there. Yeah, hopefully it will get even better in the future, but I was worried with the M1 & M2.

New Intel Laptops are looking like serious competitor to the M3 lineup - and the ARC integrated isn't bad - for gaming and battery life with Quicksync could sway some MBP purchases I think. Theres a 13 inch MSI prestige thats only 2 POUNDS Weight--- 32 GB RAM - insane about $1299. Also early test show minimal to like 5% dedegradation of performance off battery -- so 10-14 hours battery life is wild. Theres a 16 inch version - 4K netflix TESTED - 8 hours battery life--- things are getting good! maybe M4 will be that GPU punch with something wild to support games :P

Thanks for the video! The 14inch 30 M3 Max, is also the one I want to get. Its seems that's the most bang for the buck. Cool that now the Mac is not anymore left in the dust by windows laptops for blender. Coming from an M1 Air only the fan noise could be a bit annoying. Did you experiment with custom fan curves? I read somewhere that apple set it up so that the fans kick in until it's unavoidable and than they ramp up quite quickly. You can change the fan curve with third party tools to let them start sooner and don't ramp up as high. Great Channel keep going!!!d

First thank you for the kind words! On custom fan curves - oddly no, strange considering that's the *first* thing I do to any PC I own (hello getfancontrol.com!) Anyway, your characterization is pretty accurate. Fans are generally off or remain silent for most work but when activated they ramp up quite quickly. As you can hear in the video (10:58, try using headphones), they can also get quite loud when pushed hard. Even then, my only real beef with the factory curves is it feels like they should spin down more quickly.

Matthew...you must get MacFan for the M3 so you can dial in a speed RPM at least then you can see if there is no Thermal throttling, because even my M1 Pro 2021 the fans only ramp up later into much higher temperatures. Apple Silicon starts to get impressive! On my Desktop RTX3090 the BMW scene takes appoximately 7.30 seconds to complete. it's like only 30% something faster, but it is a desktop workstation that sucks power like a buffalo! The fact that you can have a laptop unplugged on your knees and render 3D scenes that fast is allready a game changer. Can't wait for the M3 Ultra in the updated Mac Studio. That will start to become very interesting for those who want a powerhorse workstation, but need to be kinda mobile!

Correct - As I call out in the video optical denoisers are now so good that we're usually wasting time *not* using them. Because of this I run most tests in a manner we as actual users of this machine would, meaning fewer samples and denoising enabled. In some cases the results are not only much faster but of better quality (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ht_8ISvtIcE.html). Great question: So this is the 14/30 Max with 36GB of RAM. Of course it all depends on the model, but for reference a 1024x1024 in XL consumes around 20 gigs, leaving a good amount of room. The new SDXL-Turbo models are a bit more RAM hungry, and I am starting to see memory pressure. So perhaps a good compromise position would be go for the top end Max chip with 64 gigs. That comes in at $3,899 whereas 96 in the base chip would be $3,999. Then, take the saved money, sell this machine next year, and get the latest and greatest.

So in terms of viewport performance, to even get close to my current RTX 3070 Ti laptop it takes a 14c CPU/30c GPU M3 Max (mine even outperforms it significantly when it comes to the denoiser because OpenImageDenoise sucks). Viewport performance in rendered view is around 10FPS on my machine. The render itself takes about fifteen seconds (and most of that is copying the data it needs into VRAM), so the M3 Max has me beat there. Genuinely would LOVE to see benchmarks with MetalRT (then it'd be more apples to apples since I ran my test using NVIDIA's OptiX). I do wish Apple would put the time into developing a competitor to OptiX denoising though

Thanks for the feedback! One of the key points of this video was to note the difference between raw numbers and experience. AI De-noising plus this chip's hardware ray tracing has created an experience that simply didn't exist in this form factor on the Mac. It's not so much about raw numbers it's about what this machine *allows* from a workflow and quality perspective. Same idea but in a slightly different context: I recently picked up a 4090 for my PC (video review incoming!) and my biggest surprise has been how good frame generation is. With the release FSR3 and its hardware independent frame gen though - it's suddenly got me thinking did I really need the 4090? Literally overnight most hardware has the capability of becoming twice as fast - that's just nutty. The larger point is I believe technological advances are expanding what performance means - for rendering that means fewer samples but made up for by de-noise, for gaming lower resolution negated by up-scaling and frame gen.

That's what's so compelling about these tests and what they may mean for an M3 Ultra. At 60 samples (across a variety of scenes), the M3 matches my 3080 (using Optix). As a 4090 is around 2x the performance of a 3080 it's actually possible an Ultra could come close to that monster.
