It’s easy to connect the chest to the head voice. It’s harder to make it a smooth transition.This video is about blending registers singing. I’m going to give you four exercises to help smooth the transition from chest to head voice and back to chest. Come do it with me!

With exercise 3, when I did it wrong, it was like the sound came from the back of my throat, but when I did it the right way, the voice was more focused, like it went directly into my head cavity. The 4th exercise was a bit more challenging to do and to differentiate when I did it wrong. Thanks for the video, loved it!!!

On exercise 4, imagine you sing foo into a long metal pipe. When you change to the oh...imagine keeping it in the same pipe. If you don't keep it narrowed, it will resonate outside the pipe. If that happens, you will feel the vibration drop into your mouth...and you've lost the upper vibrations. You will feel a difference. Let me know if this helps.

Thank you so much for this video. It's something I unconsciously resisted. Somehow, I was always forcing too much chest voice, sounding like I'm strangled. This is so much more easy breezy. I will practice and experiment with some songs. I do already feel a difference! thank you thank you thank you!

Do make sure you know how to do the exercise before hand! 1st 2:37, 2nd 4:26, 3rd 6:02, 4th 8:49. If you dont understand how to do the exercises correctly, try not to "pull" or strain the larynx. It shouldnt be forced.

Hi Chuck: I can do the exercises - no problem - but am confused about the distinction between chest voice and head voice. When doing the exercises properly, are you personally in chest voice when singing F#3 but in head voice by the time you reach C#4? Also, when doing the exercises wrong, with your larynx moving upward as the pitch rises, are you 100% in chest voice at both F#3 AND C#4? Thx!
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 2 года назад
Watch this video to answers those questions: For tenors and baritones, Mix voice begins at E4, Head voice begins at A4 and Chest voice ends at Eb4.

Interesting exercises. When I do exercise 4 as you demonstrate, I get a slight click on the way down as I go out of head into chest. Is that what's expected? You don't mention it as indicating any error in the video.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 4 года назад
Hi Andrew...the larynx is coming up slightly when you descend and so you are feeling the transition. Try adding a slight dopey sound right where you feel it about to happen and see if that helps eliminate it.

Hello Mr. Gilmore. I tried your website's free test to find out what kind of vocal range I have and I just can't do the range typically for women. I honestly feel like my vocal chords will bleed out. I took vocal lessons years ago and my instructor had only known one other woman who could reach close to the scales I felt comfortable in. Though I feel comfortable with singing male ranges should I just stick to the women's range so I can find out where to start?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 8 месяцев назад
Hi Holly, you may bridge where the baritone and tenor voices bridge if you are a true contralto. The vocal test on my website doesn't tell your range and classification. It indicates what vocal type you are ie Pulled Chest - High Larynx and etc. But all the contrato's I've worked with were able to get into their 2nd bridge and above. It's possible for you too I'm sure.

It seemsthe closed oooo is more related to mix voice and open oooo, more related to chest voice, is it right? As it sounds in "John", not in "shampoo", "wood"....
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 2 года назад
The vowel sound, "oo" as in "boot" is a "headier" vowel. The vowel sound "oo" as in "book" or "wood" is a vowel considered by many to encourage resonance that is mid way between chest and head resonances. The word John is pronounced generally in US English with an "ah" sound as in "Bach" or "bother". Any vowel that is sung "wide" (encourages Chest) or "narrow" (encourages Head) actually changes the vowel. So an "oo" sung open or wide, is no longer "oo" but becomes some other vowel...like "Oh" or "Ah".

Is it okay that my voice tends to have a quieter volume when transitioning? if so, how can I strengthen it?hehe😁
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 2 года назад
At first when singing from chest to head voice it's not uncommon to go quieter when you are getting your balance. Over time, as you get comfortable with the new coordination, you can lean harder into it without grabbing or pulling chest. These 4 exercises in the video will help.
