Watching from Malaysia. Father Neil Boyd can be the parish priest of my church in Melaka ant time. I"ll attending mass daily then I think Father Lowe is great to. I am terrified of the Rev mother she reminds me of the Rev mother in my convent school. Great entertainment.vTq.
Was born and raised Catholic and have to say that I thoroughly enjoy this show. It is especially relevant (?) because I was born about the time depicted by this series and being northern Pennsylvania we of course had a succession of Irish priests.
I just stumbled onto this program but I absolutely love it. Just good tongue in cheeck humor. Series like these, reminds me that life can be as simple or complicated as we wish to make it.
I remember watching this show when I was in Seminary 40 years ago. My Field Placement was under a Priest from England. After Ordination, my Curacy was, to say the least, interesting. It was like going from Masterpiece Theatre to Life with Luigi. I felt like a supporting actor in a low budget Italian Opera. This show was the most realistic portrayal of Clergy ever presented thank to it being based on Peter De Rosa time as a Curate. It is so good to be able to see it again, and as much as I hate to admit it, I am more like Fr. Duddleswell as my time in life, then the young Fr. Neil I once was.
@@tinapeters5725 For us it was Father Grile, only he was like Father Neil when I knew him. He baptized me, gave me my First Communion, and married my mother and stepfather, all in the space of a little over a year. (We all converted so they could marry in 1974.) I listened to his final Homily when he retired in... 2019 or so, online. He was a lot like Father D, even the humor! And I didn't remember his accent being so Irish when I was a kid. He was a very good part of my childhood and my family's recovery from catastrophe, and I was able to tell him so and thank him before he retired, albeit by email. He was such a decent guy. There were a few of the other kind of priests back then, before everyone wholly embraced Vatican II, the more surly, yelling a lot, everything is wrong kind, but Father Grile was young and very different at a time when the Church was struggling with its identity. I'm glad he landed at St. Alphonsus, and that they were a community who were open to the new direction that he represented.
I used to read these when I was a schoolboy in another country back in the 70s. One of the books had a still from the then-new tv series and I had a crush on Father Boyd. It's taken me 40 years and RU-vid to finally get to see the series. And I must say I rather enjoy it - it's very slow and gently by today's standards.
This was made 42 years ago. For those of us who were around then it is still strangely watchable. Sadly, Arthur Lowe was never given any honour for his acting career.
This series is the best! My education consists of primary, high school, under graduate and graduate education at Catholic institutions. This program is on point! Saint Jude’s reminds me of my parish. Thank you for posting this series it is as I stated the best.
Hi - I am shocked that this aired in the states, I would never have thought any American station would find this funny. We loved it, and it was a very successful sitcom on ITV here, but in the states, now you really have surprised me!!
Not sure I'm convinced by this analogy to be honest. Bless me Father was written by a former Catholic priest (Peter de Rosa ), and so the content is funny yet respectful. Father Ted was written by an aggressive atheist (Graham Linehan ) and is an inconsiderate and unsympathetic caricature of the Catholic priesthood and belittles Catholic Doctrine and practice. They're not complementary at all I would suggest.
@@DB-qw6xq I agree. It reminds me of yes minister which also utilises the humour to be found in situations of high authority without mocking the establishment or it;s office holders.
Every Saturday, my siblings & I called the local golf club to find out if Father Fitzgerald had a tee time on Sunday and went to his Mass. Fastest sermons in history.
I was only little when I watched this originally and don't remember it as well as I'd like, so it's a nice surprise for this girl from good Irish Catholic stock to get to see it again. Thank you xx
Happy to find this... we got this on PBS in the 70's when we got about 6 stations on cable tv, which was new back then..... would be nice to get many fewer stations on cable tv now.. most of it is JUNK.
@@ingaeubanks5737 That's great TV IMO. Others are Some Mothers ave em, On the Buses, Curry and Chips etc. So much entertainment to watch on youtube. It's amazing!
@@valveman12 I am watching the On the Buses series right now, and have watched the other two you mentioned. Please keep your suggestions coming if you have time. I am sure there are more good ones out there :-)
When the little girl in confession says “I’ve committed adultery three times!” and “He says the next time he comes it’ll be in a bleedin’ box!” is hilarious! 😂
At 10 years old I confessed to stealing a12 foot long 2 x 4. Is that you Patty O'Hara? Yes father. And I was carryin' the other end ! My sisters voice proudly proclaimed from the other confessional.l. He and my dad were building a duck blind and mentioned needing one. They used it.
I didn't know about this, and certainly didn't know Captain Mainwaring took Holy Orders. Did he call any of his parishioners stupid boys, or his curate say Do you think that's wise, Father? And what about Lance Corporal Jones rushing in with a bayonet saying They don't like it up them?
Hard to believe that Daniel Abineri turned out the way he did after doing this series. Goes to show you that actors really are completely different off screen.
In 1st grade. I spent the day being dragged into the hallway by Sister Mary Howard saying tell Sister so & so what daddy said about Father Fitzgerald dear, He said if Fitaz asks him for one goddamed more dime he's gonna knock him on his ass in the parking lot....to nuns clapping their hand over mouths in hysterics. @@jameshogan6142 It is certainly not respectful, I will grant you that. And it certainly isn't a family show. But it isn't mean and the situations are so absurd and broad that it can't be taken as an attack on the Church itself. At least, that's how I feel. What is ironic, is that it was "Bless me, Father" that was canceled after a campaign by some who felt that it was disrespectful of the Church. That's a shame.
@@NoahSpurrier Perhaps those who campaigned against Bless me father felt it was the thin end of the wedge which would culminate in shows which would take even more latitude in mocking religion. In any case modern culture has reduced faith to a level just above superstition and certainly something to be not seriously regarded by people who consider themselves to be intelligent. That too is a shame.
Never even heard of this before doing some reading on Arthur Lowe. It's pretty good. A more reserved father Ted well before the sex abuse scandal started the slow process of putting the church in its place.
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
@@fredflintstoner596 Please try to understand before one of us dies. You are going to forget all you know about the horse. (I think I may have skipped a bit but never mind)
Personally, it gets downright annoying and irritating, when different playlists claim a particular series, etc, then dilude the list with more unrelated videos! It makes wasted bandwidth! Should be banned! This list is 162 videos, and few (10 out of 162 in the playlist) are of Bless Me Father series!
Again, no laugh track used. This was filmed in Studio 2 at the London Weekend Television studios, with an audience of 300 watching it and enjoying it live.
Arthur Lowe reminds me of tha french actor Jean Gabin.Watched this series as a kid, very funny. All religions are taking themselves too serious.Should be banned all of em.
It's sad that counseling (from a professional registered therapist) isn't available for free under the national healthcare plan. ... I guess if it was, then the church would go bankrupt and forced to sell to the city to become a Community Centre.
