RPM Filtering with bidirectional dshot is one of the most powerful ways to get better performance out of your micro quadcopter or Tiny Whoop. But BLHeli_S ESC's don't support it by default. That's where JESC and JazzMaverick come in. These are two aftermarket firmwares that you can put on your ESC to enable RPM filtering with bidirectional Dshot. But there's a difference. JESC costs money. JazzMaverick is free. I'll show you how ot install either of them and get them running.

Thank you for your videos. I am 45, had no interest in learning all the beta flight etc. I only bought spektrum bnf, easy setup etc. Now, I have built a drone, own a Jumper T16 and am all in on this stuff. What a great hobby. If not for your videos I would have never left bnf. Nice that I found someone that can explain things in step by step that does not put me to sleep. I am a total geek watching your videos as I set stuff up etc.

I installed jesc and BF 4.1 on my Mobula 6 after less than a dozen flights to see what it would do to my flight time. I used only the 48khz, and therefore free, version. Here's my results with three batteries both before and after. Not up to Bardwell testing standards, but maybe good enough for a RU-vid comment :) I also improved my flight time with jesc and BF4.1 BF 4.0 BLHeli 16.7 jesc and BF4.1 Happymodel 300mAh brand new 0:03:14 0:05:17 GNB 350mAh brand new 0:02:58 0:05:01 GNB 300mAh months old 0:02:42 0:04:36

Thank you for the video! This helped me set up RPM filtering on my Trashcan, and it flies great! I also tried out the JESC 48kHz PWM early access firmware, and WOW does it make a difference. My flight time on 2S went from 2:30 @ 24kHz to 3:40 @ 48kHz. I believe the power savings are coming from the motor controller FETs. After enabling the core temperature on the OSD, I noticed the temperature dropped from 162F @ 24kHz to 124F @ 48kHz.

I was certainly happy to purchase the jesc licences for my eachine trashcan. I am running jesc 48khz and Betaflight 4.1.2 with bidirectional DShot. It all is flying so good with cold motors. With 48khz its definitely not as hungry on the battery. I was running this setup prior to watching this video and my advice is if you own BLHeliS esc you should definitely purchase JESC for them.

This was really helpful! I'm currently waiting for the dust to settle on my own flying before investing but the local micro-quad group is super engaged in the debate and testing of JESC and likely JazzMaverick too. If I can get 30% more flight time per battery then $6 per quad (you have to buy 4 licenses for 4 ESCs) will be worth it.

On my Mobula 7 V2- I flashed with jazzmaveric just as you showed and I went from 2.5 mins to 3.5 mins flight time on the same packs in the same flight location under the same conditions flying the same way and drawing exactly 250mAh each comparison flight with cool motors to boot. So ~40% increase in flight time. BIG UP THANKS AGAIN JOSH!!!! YOU ROCK!!!

I use JESC and really like it on 4 micro's so far, 2 whoops and 2 toothpicks. I use the 48Khz version and in all cases flight time increased and quads sounded smoother. A notable one was the Meteor65 with 0802 22000Kv motors. Best a 300mah could do was 2:15 of pretty fast house and outdoor (no wind) ripping. After JESC 48Khz, I am getting 3:30 for aggressive flying and up to 4:00 cruising on the same 300mah batts. I'm amazed by the change!

I learned to fly on the iflight TurboBee77R and still is my favorite garden racer as it's so durable. I installed jESC (24k) on it a few weeks ago and was impressed how much smoother it flew. This 'power whoop' was way too powerful to fly indoors for me as a novice pilot, but suddenly i could with ease. I would describe it as the flight behavior being so much more aligned with the stick movement. Fly time increased some as less minor corrections seemed necessary.(maybe my skill level was improving as well) I recently updated it to the 48k version as well, and fly time really increased a lot without any negative effects. Not real benchmark comparison but whereas the original 4.04 out of the box configuration gave around 2.30 max(2S-520mAh), i now easily reach 4 min with the same battery.

The RPM filter saved me! Today I hit a branch and broke a prop and I didn't even notice it. Really! It moved slightly but no crazy flipping like it did when I hit branches with no room filter. I did a flip with the broken prop, and only landed because I heard that the sound was a bit weird. Landed normally thinking something was stuck on the motor, and was really surprised when I saw that it was the prop, lol! The only thing is that propwash has gotten a lot worse, I am very new to tuning so I'll tinker a bit. Motors are freezing cold so I have a lot of room to tune

@srossi88
@srossi88 4 года назад
For those who complain about buying JESC, to me, it's pretty simple. If you buy a blheli32 ESC, then you've ALREADY been doing the same thing, the cost is just hidden to you in the form of a higher cost ESC (remember that Blheli32 requires the OEM to license the software from the blheli32 devs). This whole argument of "I already bought the hardware why should I pay more..."....no you haven't. You bought blheli_s, which means you bought ESCs that do NOT support the developers of that firmware.
@rcrdps8144
@rcrdps8144 4 года назад
I didn't really notice a difference with the rpm filtering, but the 48khz runtime rocks! And I used UAV Tech's super high whoop tuning pids,... which maybe wouldn't have been possible without RPM filtering,...so,....
@Sugar_K
@Sugar_K 4 года назад
another good reason to support Jesc is there is a V2 in the works that is a ground up rewrite and... will offer some substantial performance improvements over Blheli-s and maybe even the Blheli32 version.. for micros don't forget that Joe also worked out that the 48khz would improve ( massively ) flight times on really small motors with the reduction in back emf in the motor windings... no one else is diving as deep into motor and esc theory right now as Thorsten and especially if you fly micro brushless its well worth supporting his current and future endeavours
@tomnel

I agree that JESC deserves compensation for what he’s brought to BLHeli S. The implementation is what’s keeping me from buying. It’s tied to the esc which if it dies (and it will) that software is gone *poof* I go through too much hardware for it to be cost effective.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 4 года назад
With all due respect, I disagree with that argument. You saved $2 or more by buying a BLHeli_S ESC instead of BLHeli32. When a BLHeli32 ESC dies you don't get that $2 back. You replace the whole ESC. Same with JESC.

You know what I have learned in the past year of watching videos, learning how to fly, and owning only an SPRacing F3 FC in various frames? Every month there's some fancy new software or parameter that supposed to be SO awesome, and make your quad fly SO good. Is this all supposed to replace traditional PID tuning? Because I have basically a Wizard (in a much better frame about the same weight) with BF 3.5.7 and have tuned nothing bud PIDS and have been completely satisfied. I switched to Emuflight because it piqued my interest a bit, and, while it took a bit of tuning to get there, it still only flies as good as it did with weeks of tuning BF357 (with the benefit of about 30s longer flight times and ice cold motors). What it comes down to, for me, is why try to fix what you already thought was perfect? I'm not complaining. I just don't understand why everyone's so eager to reconfigure and retune their quads every three days.
@JoshuaBardwell
@JoshuaBardwell 4 года назад
If you fly a 5" quad, the default can work well, but many people feel it can also be improved upon. If you fly a micro quad, nearly everybody agrees the defaults have a lot of room for improvement, and sometimes it's impossible to get a great tune at all. The goal of features like this is to make MORE people have YOUR experience of, "It flies fine what is your problem?"

@DroneShotFPV

It basically comes down to this, if you're satisfied with where you are, then leave it alone. Just like the old saying, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". But, if there is a way to tune or enhance to the "nth" degree, and get just more performance, and you're like myself, or most others who LOVE to be on the cutting edge with cutting edge results, then go for it. I can guarantee you that when I first started building mini quads, when they were just starting to become a thing (I have been building RC crafts since the 80's with my father and blasa planes) that I was happy at that time with h ow they flew, thought it was phenomenal! I didn't change much as things progressed, because, as you stated, I was happy. But then I built a newer one with newer stuff, I was like "wait, this is amazing!" so I realized what I was happy with, was not actually the best it could be, but I was happy none the less. Then when cleanflight was introduced, same thing, etc etc etc, Rinse, repeat. When you get to the point of no prop wash, and smooth input and smooth steady results, it's all worth it, and feels even more amazing. BUT.... that being said.... you do not have to, and if you are happy with where you are at, then leave it, because truthfully you don't have to. I still have an original that I built was back, with Baseflight on it. It didn't see much air time back in the day as I didn't have a lot of flight time, and I tend to build a quad a week it seems, and it still flies (it's a dog compared to today's standards, but was once amazing!). So it's possible to keep what you're satisfied with in tact and be happy, but that is ultimately up to you!

Josh, i have a 3s crazybee whoop, ive just done the jesc thing, i was more than happy to pay the licence even if i couldnt get it to work, Joe deserves it. Ive updated bf to 4.2.1 and i cant change the gyro frequency,, theirs no drop down. the best combo i can come up with is dshot 300 gyro 8k ( cant change that ) and pid loop at 4k,. it did seem to fly ok at 8k/8k with dshot 600, but was a quick test just to know the esc is working still... in tasks its was well below that, the best combo was 8k/4k with dshot 300, tasks show the same... does different gyro and pid loop frequency cause any issues ? BTW love the tune on startup :)

I tried the free version 2 weeks ago, it didn't work (didn't arm when bidirectional dshot enabled), jesc worked.

been using 16.77 48K on the diatone gtr 349 for over a week and it's been amazing. I am curious why your other 3 motors showed 100% error. None of mine did once i plugged the battery in. Also...fun trick, you can figure out motor KV now from doing the math between RPM and Voltage reading at the top. My mamba 1408 4000kv motors are actually about 3850 kv after almost a year of abuse.

I originally used blhelisuite to flash the ESC and when you flash with blhelisuite you have to click select file for each individually ESC instead of once at the beginning, so only the first ESC got flashed.

@@vermmaa i'm assuming you plugged a battery in? my startup tones for the ESC went up several steps in pitch after flashing either Jazz or JESC, but both gave me 0% error across all the motors when i was in betaflight with a battery plugged in.

I had some trouble getting the JazzMaverick to work with the iFlight SucceX-E F4, 45A Blheli_S 2-6S 4 In 1 & BrotherHobby tornado t1 1407 4100kv. I did successfully get the ESCs flashed using the G_H_30_REV16_73.HEX (for my ESCs). When I got back into Betaflight I enabled the bidirectional DSHOT by using CLI command: set dshot_bidir = ON I also entered these two commands: set dshot_burst = OFF set scheduler_optimize_rate = ON The motors seem to be working normal and the error% in the motors tab was 0.00% on all. Before running those commands it seemed like the bidirectional DSHOT switch would keep turning itself off after save/reboot. Not sure why?

Hey Joshua i was replacing a broken esc and I had forgotten that I used jesc for the old esc’s still on the quad. I flashed all the esc using jazz maverick and only got the new replacement esc to work and not the 3 other esc’s that had been flashed with jesc. Is there a way I can get my old esc’s to work in jazzmaverick instead ?

Hi Josh, I want to upgrade my BLHELI_s 30A ESC's to JazzMaveric firmware. But now the most current version is 16.9 with many subfolders (BB1_L, BB2_H, Beat, Official, RC) and again there subfolders to those folders. I have a 5 inch quad (modified version of Eachine Wizzard X220 V2 version with changed FC to Speedybee F7V3). Which version of JazzMaveric should I choose?

You have to check your current firmware for the "H" as listed in this video and on the Jesc page. It's pretty simple to check, and if you have that H in the middle, you're able to do it.
