I think maybe they found their destinies and it kept them from spending as mug time with each other as before and eventually they drifted away to pursue their own goals. This day is like when both of them found themselves reminiscing over what they had together

My personal interpretation of it is that their parents (or Rarity for Sweetie Belle) forced them to stay apart because they didn’t approve of their relationship. Thus “Let’s stay strangers like we’re *meant* to”

Who knows, maybe Ponyville really isn't so small as it seems. My hometown of Sand Springs isn't so tiny, and Button Mash could've moved across town, too far for Sweetie Bell to visit, and been homeschooled. That's what happened to my friend Joey. But we eventually found each other again halfway through high school, so maybe they'll reconnect as well!

+Kristal Cadenza The way they sound in the song sounds a lot like Blank Check said about them being forced apart. Maybe Rarity got over protective when they were young and Sweetie Belle ended up on the hospital for something that was just an accident when she played with Button. But Rarity overreacted and let all her anger over what had happened onto Button, forcing him to be apart from Sweetie Belle? And then as time moved on and Rarity couldn't force them apart anymore since they were grown up, they were scared to go back to each other after being apart for so long, so they just stayed Strangers. It does sound a lot like something Rarity would do. Anyways that's just a theory :D (I'm a ScootaBelle shipper so i don't really think that much of possibilities to why they're not with each other anymore in this animation but I must say that this was still a good fan work with a very good song)

+The Lightning Brony That is definitely something I'd see Rarity do. Hell, if I had a sibling, there's a chance I'd do the same if I let my anger take over. Then again, I'm pretty good at controlling my emotions, so at the same time I kinda doubt I'd do something like that. Regardless, I will ship Button Mash and Sweetie Belle together to kingdom come, and no one will stop me so help me Faust!
