Yoda is Belgian Draft Horse who is completely blind. Yoda worked as a plow horse for many years and had a very physical life. He was blinded by a case of uveitis, that had less than optimal treatment. Yoda's companion is the other horse in the video Rune, who is also completely blind. In this video, animal chiropractor, Dr. Doug Willen, does a gentle treatment of body work and light chiropractic. Working on muscle imbalances, narrow base, and overall stress reduction.
equusmagazine.com/....
Origins
The familiar "blond" Belgian Draft horse that we see in the United States has its roots in the Brabant, also known as the Belgian Heavy Draft. This name has been shortened to Belgian for common usage.
During the Middle Ages it was known as the Flanders Horse (after the region of Europe in which it originated) and had great influence on the development of other draft horse breeds, such as the Suffolk Punch, the Clydesdale and the Shire.
Throughout the centuries, Belgian breeders resisted pressure to produce lighter cavalry horses and concentrated on breeding the Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft, which was well-suited to the climate and rich, heavy soil of the region. By not allowing foreign blood to enter the breed and by practicing selective breeding to promote desired qualities, the Belgian breeders were able to produce a versatile heavy draft horse with exceptional power.
Appearance
The Brabant, or Belgian Heavy Draft horse, is a massive horse, powerfully built and standing between 16.2 - 17 hands. The head is comparatively small and refined, with an intelligent expression. The Belgian Draft more normally seen in the United States is not as "massive" as the Brabant, but still retains the proportions of the Brabant.

Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue: www.gentlegiantsdrafthorseres...
Gentle Friends: gentlefriends.org/adopt
Gentle Giants Draft Horse Rescue was formed to facilitate the rescue of Draft and Draft Cross horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect.
The Primary Function of the Rescue
GGDHR promotes the benefits and uses of Draft horses of all breeds as trail mounts, schooling mounts, and competition mounts. We educate the public through the use of brochures, pamphlets, and public presentations on the topics of: horse slaughter and cruelty, the responsibilities of horse ownership, the over-population and over-breeding of horses, and how over-breeding contributes to the horse slaughter industry. Learn more about our educational outreach here.
Slaughter is a highly profitable market and most of the public is unaware that the buyers for the slaughterhouses frequent public auctions to purchase their horses. We attend the same public auctions, choose the Draft horses we feel are the most viable candidates for rescue, and then outbid the meat buyer.
We transport the horses to our facility, where the horses are quarantined for a minimum of 21 days for illness. During that time, we begin to evaluate each individual horse and learn its personality and training level on the ground and under saddle. We ride the horses under many different circumstances, and evaluate for what level of rider the horse would best be suited. During this time, the horse also receives any necessary veterinary care, farrier care, dental care, and training.
When the horses have completed their quarantine, they are available to be placed into adoptive homes under a strict contract. The horses are advertised on our website and on the internet to help find suitable adoptive homes. Each horse is evaluated with its prospective adopter, and if we feel the horse and rider are a suitable match for one another, then the adopter may apply to adopt that horse. At that time, GGDHR would perform a background and reference check, and may at times also conduct home visits, if deemed necessary.
GGDHR is primarily funded by adoption fees, private donations, and sponsorships which facilitate the rescue of future draft horses from slaughter.

I want to start on a good note - thank you for helping Yoda, Dr. He's a beauty and so gentle and patient and seems so knowing and accepting. You feel like he's had a hard life and hadn't been loved and is learning how to be around good people who care for him - thank you also to helper Rune 😊 On a darker note - his previous abusers had that beautiful horse working for them and they didn't even try to help him? I find that sickening. Yoda could have avoided that blind fate - all those filth needed to do was a little preventative medicine - and Yoda was helping them - working with them - and they didn't even bother to help him. What sort of ungodly evil people would do that? Thank you to all that's good that he come into such good hands - I wish all beasties could have such good people looking after them.

@@AnimalCrackerDrDougWillen If only you could give them some exercises & stretches to do themselves between your visits. But then animals are much more in tune with their bodies than humans & unless they’re forced to work in unnatural postures for them, once the strains, spasms & knots are released, I’m sure they’re probably better at not immediately going back into bad habits like we humans. I do find it amazing that they just meet you, let you poke, prod, push & stretch them, even on sore spots, yet every animal I’ve seen looks at you afterwards like you’re a little bit magic

I wanted to know about dog chin whiskers today so I asked Siri. This answer came back and I copied a portion of it for blind dogs. I figured horses whiskers did the same thing for them as the dogs, and remembered this magnificent draft horse I had viewed earlier. Wanted to share with you. With much appreciation for what you do. “Like Antennae or Canes Whiskers function much as antennae do in insects. They help dogs get a sense of their surroundings, particularly in dim light or in the dark. They also function as canes do for blind people. Whiskers are especially helpful to dogs who have vision impairment. Reflexes When you gently touch a dog's whiskers, the dog's eye on the same side of the whiskers you've touched will blink reflexively. The dog will very likely turn his head away from the side you've touched.” Did you know this?

Yoda is a precious horse. I have so much compassion and love for these poor gentle giants that are overworked and abused. It’s beyond heartbreaking. I’m so glad you were there to help him, and that you approach with respect and true concern and love. Horses are so emotionally intelligent so this orchestrates well. 💯❤️ In a perfect world I could be one of your assistants. I would absolutely love to be a part of this. Animals simply own my heart, helping the helpless is beyond rewarding. Thank you for ALL you do. You’re simply amazing Dr Doug. 💯❤️🐴. 🐑 🐷 🐶🐱🐰🐓

I appreciate how gentle you are with a horse that's so much bigger and heavier than you are. I laugh though when I watch it work on him because I have someone who works on me and they use some of the exact same techniques and so I just kind of giggle. I also share with them your videos. You work on animals they work on people. Really enjoy watching you work with animals I love sharing your videos with my horse friends and they enjoy it.

Yoda is a very sweet Belgian. His pal, Rue wanted part of the action, even though he is blind. Blind horses have an instinct that tells them to trust fully. Yoda was into his therapy session. The communication and trust between you and Yoda was awesome. Your methods for getting Yoda to relax was wonderful to see. Horses are so precious. Bless you for working with horses and animals.

Very interesting observing two blind horses with the Hands-On chiropractic Care with verbal communication- the kinesthetic and verbal language is a pathway to communicate with these blind horses and the blind horses are showing what other horses won't and are very receptive. I hope you also treated the bay horse I think he was looking for treatment as well as to socialize with his friend. Great work. God bless

Hope both of them know how beautiful they are. Jost recomended this channel for a girl I know which is a horse person. Showed the gentle horse that stood on a road and turned around to see her romp after you were done :-) Think her reaction said it all, sort of "what the heck?" lol :-)

I just love the way you always explain & talk to the horses, I believe that many animals do understand some of what we say & they at the least hear & feel the intention given! Some people think I’m crazy but I know some do understand. Love & respect all you do to ease all the animals pain, stress etc. positive energy & prayers for you & your family.
