What a spicy old banger.
This was recorded in one continuous take with no edits, samples, skullduggery, shenanigans or funny business.
The original drums were removed with an algorithm moises.ai/
I'm not sure if I'll use it again as it has left some audible artefacts but it was interesting to try it this way.
Enjoy.

Wow! What an honour to receive this comment ❤️ You're my hero, man, your drumming with Blind Guardian had a profound positive impact on my life, I can't thank you enough. I hope to make more 'Thomen-era' BG covers this year so maybe check back in if you get the time 😉 Love and peace ✌️ Ewan

hey Ewan, just a few questions -- why do you use the hands-free Cobra hat clutch when you also (from what I can tell) have another hat on the right that's your permanently-closed-for-using-the-double-pedal hat? Wouldn't you just use the hat on the right for the double pedal passages and the normal hat on the left as a hat you can open and close? Also I noticed you're open handed like me (big up)...I was wondering if you find it hard to switch your snare hand from right to left when you move from the hat to the ride? (by 'hat' there I mean the regular hat on the left). I find when I have the ride in its conventional place on the right, and I have to use my left hand for the snare, it feels awkward because my left hand just isn't as good as my right, especially on the snare. To compensate I put the ride on my left, although that's not perfect...would appreciate your thoughts :)

Hey Saed, thanks for the comment! I the cobra clutch is set for a "half open" hi-hat sound, so there is still some air between the cymbals with the clutch down, giving a longer sustain. In contrast, the fixed hi-hat on the right is set by resting the cymbals together, then locking the top cymbal in place, giving less sustain. Also, the left side is a standard 14" hi-hat whereas the right side is 2x thin 16" crashes. So the idea is two contrasting sounds, the left a traditional washy open hat, the right is more punchy and modern sounding. I chose the sound that felt right to me for each part of the song. Switching to open handed playing from traditional crossed-over style definitely takes a lot of practice! I choose to do it because to me it has an ergonomic benefit, especially when using the double pedal. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to move the ride over to the left...😅

Hi, Really awesome playing! Could you please tell me what is happening with the drum beat that happens between 2:03-2:20? I'm really struggling to figure it out what the time signature is.
@ewanmcdonaldmusic
@ewanmcdonaldmusic 2 года назад
Hi, thanks for the comment! The time signature goes into 9/4. The drum beat loops every bar so once you have it down just need to play it 4x in a row, job done. Lil fill at the end for some flair if you want ;)
