@@Cogsagi I always thought it was a way of giving a lighthearted memory and dropping a sudden mood swing of a line. The first one to me always seemed as a kind of breath of air and the second line reverts back to the point of the song. Just what it seems to me tho. Different takes on it I suppose
@@91Definite It's actually a memory from his childhood. His parents were arguing in their bedroom with the door closed. Mark was standing outside the door listening and he had a cup of apple juice. His parents suddenly opened the door and when he tried to run off he spilled the apple juice.

Someone just started to threaten to hurt himself. It has happened before. He says he hears voices and that this song drowns them out. He's so young, i don't think i could actually ever get over his death. Some things are just too scary. I hope that anyone who hears this song will rethink themselves. Because, they won't die alone, if you want friends you have to search hard, but they are out there. Even if you didn't live long enough to meet them. 'Waiting' just like you.

yea i guess, i mainly play on a baritone guitar so you'll have to forgive me. I view these verses based on what i hear vs. what is actually written. So i just use a capo to tune myself up until i find the right key
Every time I hear this song I can't help but think of the kid who went to columbine high school who killed himself with this song on repeat after the tragedy at his school. I remember thinking I just want to hug him and tell him it gets better, even though I'd be lying.

*The true meaning of this song and no Its not about Mark being lonely on tour* The lyrics of the song are based on a letter written by a boy who could not stand to be humiliated at school, then committed suicide. Adam's parents sent the letter to the band, and he wanted the letter to be an inspiration for a song, since he felt like it was no reason of importance to anyone. Blink-182 made the song for the fan, but the ending is altered, saying that Adam survives. Greg Barnes, survivor and witness to the death of his best friend in the Columbine Massacre in 1999, hanged himself a year later while listening to the song. The band was very criticised after that which made Mark Hoppus finding a more "acceptable" explanation for the song.

This song was actually not based on a "suicide letter" that was just made up. I'm not sure why they wrote this song, but they no longer perform it due to the title "Adams song" and Dj AM's first name is Adam.

After going over it, they realized that this was their first "mature" song. It has a serious and sad tone, something that has an impact on someone after listening to it. They realized it was a good song, even if it were very saddening. So it was released in 1999. That same year was the Columbine High School shooting. In May of 2000, a year and two weeks after the anniversary of the shooting, junior Greg Barnes, who witnessed his coach being shot and found out his close friend was killed in the original shooting, committed suicide. His father found him in the garage, hanging, playing this song on repeat. There was no note.

its both what blondie and alpha said. now a days when mark answers what adam's song is about, he mentions his depression on tour, but back then he said it was about someone who emailed him his suicide note and then committed suicide. he probably likes to only talk about the depression one cause its not as sad as the person who died. songs can have multiple meanings
