The "bumping" method was the only way my grandpa checked his dairy cows for calves. I was at a longhorn show with a family my son worked with in college. I asked the boss when a particular cow was due. She said she hadn't preg checked the cow and wasn't sure how far she was in calf. Showed them the "bump" test. They were amazed when they felt the calf from the outside, they had never done it. My son showed a bunch of college friends the trick when he was at a dairy consortium in New Mexico. None of them had heard of it. He was the bomb. Having a bought of PTSD with all that snow. Reminds me of the snowpocalypse we had in Texas February 2021. Keep the videos coming. Miss being around a dairy.

Sounds like we got about the same severity of snow storm here in MB when it passed through us. Not a huge amount of snow, around 10 cm, but lots of wind and with it drifts, can make the roads interesting. Not sure what the forecast was for you guys, but there was only supposed to be a minimal amount of snow here so it was a bit unexpected.

Have you ever considered experimenting with various forms of stimuli to see if it would have any effect on production. Examples of stimuli would be music or a television. I watch a lot of different channels and have notice that cows tend to behave much like large dogs. It would be curious to see the results of such an experiment. Did a google search after posting this and found this. For years, studies have looked into the effects of classical music on a cow's milk production. Back in 2001, researchers from the University of Leicester published their 'Moosic Study', which found that dairy cows produce more milk when listening to relaxing classical tunes. Oct 10, 2019

Here in southern Missouri in the US we call that bumping a calf. It's neat to determine how far a long a cow is by bumping. Of course the farther along they are the closer to the skin the calf is and they bump real easy and hard.Good video as always.

hi Jan hope you are well loved the video i always enjoy watching your content and love the drone footage you are a awesome drone operator i wanted to ask a couple of questions 1 is there much of a temperature difference from the outside pens to the inside straw packs and if when you move cattle into the straw pack from a outside pen when snowing does that affect the cattle in the change in temperature because i remember you saying in a earlier video that when cattle are outside for the winter they develop a winter coat to cope with the Canadian winters i hope to here from you god bless
@MellowYe77ow
@MellowYe77ow Год назад
Yes, there can be as much 30° C (54° F) difference. (Sometimes more) When it's below freezing outside, they typically try to keep the barn at around freezing. (0° C/32° F) Yes, the cow's winter coat can cause her to get too warm, and reduce milk production. Jan has a video on the channel titled "Will Trimming This Cow Make Her Produce More?!" where he trims the excess coat off of a cow's back.

Have you considered using robots to keep the barns cleaner? Expensive, yes! However, (10th generation dairyman) has shown it keeps them cleaner. Helps with the bedding, etc. Enjoy your videos as always!
@shaunp9592
@shaunp9592 Год назад
10th gen has a different type of barn. The robot skims the manure down the holes in the slat floor to a pit underneath. Jan's barn is a solid slab floor so the robots that 10th gen have won't work on his. Manure is heavy and hard to push all the way to the cleanout pit, robot would have a hard time doing that and probably not do a very good job, so bobcat most likely the best option.
