Since many ask about the choice of campsite. This trip was done to test gear for winter expeditions in the mountains above the tree-line and a campsite with less shelter from the wind was chosen on purpose for test purposes. The Hilleberg Nallo 3 is a tent designed in arctic Sweden for conditions like this.
It is not lost on us how much effort it takes to solo shoot these videos, especially the walking down the trail into the distance shots. Then you take it to another level by adding snow, in a winter storm, no less! Always enjoyable. Thank you!
Tons of respect for doing this in a cold tent. As far as I am concerned, if you are going to camp in a heated tent, you might as well stay home and camp out in your living room.
Your Western Mountaineering GWS Puma sleeping bag is as good as you can get, it's Down is responsibly sourced & made in America. And it's has a COIL YKK zipper; no teeth that might snags. The effort to film this adventure is unbelievable. Thank you for sharing this adventure with me. I didn't even blink while watching because I was afraid I might miss something. Something puzzles MEeee. I've never seen you eating bacon, something so tasty & loaded with fat & protein calories. It's my favorite snack food to munch on while hiking along any trail at anytime night or day. And I almost always add bacon that I've pre-cooked to add to all my freeze dried meals. Warm Regards from bone dry Reno, Nevada
Bravo, regardless of the equipment its still freezing cold with extreme winds. To make such a marvelous video under those conditions earns my admiration. A lot of work. Past memories of crawling out of my sleeping bag and putting on Outer gear and boots made me shiver when I saw you crawl out of your bag.
Easily one of the best videos I have seen in a while ! The effort to make it is understood and most appreciated since I did snow tours myself for many years. and I know what is easy in warm weather becomes a torture in very cold and windy weather. thanks a heap !!!!
Dear Norwegian Xplorer: you are awesome! As an armchair companion, I cannot imagine these backpacking conditions. But it is still so much fun. Especially the coffee preparation!
This video showed why I always carry the Hilleberg tent which had never made me disappointed in the wintertime and/or at the tough places. I respect the Hilleberg personally!!!!
Oh wow, this is fantastic. So invigorating! The snow-pegs did a great job keeping the tent secure. Heart-shaped waffles, love. The snownado right behind you as you were putting on your snowshoes....epic!! Beautifully shot and documented. Captain Go! Thank you so much, Jarl. Stay safe my friend. ☺🙏❄❤
Excellent! I have been hiking a lot in 2021, and want to try backpacking in 2022. Your winter ability makes me think I might be able to try summer backpacking
It is winter camping. Good try-out for the tent. Very windy but with excellent visibility I wouldn't call it a snowstorm. Showing newbies what to expect and how to prepare is always a good idea.
I’m my younger days I hiked/camped in very cold winter weather several times…not above the tree line though. This video was very informative and very well done …stay warm Jarl ☃️
Saw a docu about Norway on Fra3 ("Faut pas rêver - Norvège) and learned a word in Norwegian "friluftsliv". Of course I thought of you, Jarl. In Dutch "het leven in de vrije natuur". It's an art of life, eine richtige Lebenskunst, an enrichment of body and soul. And you show us so many times that it makes you very happy. Looking very forward to the following episode in your cold tent ! Nice greetings from Flanders !
you cant beat a hilleberg tent ive never had a bad night in one good video good gear and good seasond skill come together to make one hell of an experience
Awesome video and super educational. I’m too old now to take on this winter challenge Jarl, but certainly enjoy living it vicariously through you and this video. Well done as always!
Glad you showed how you worked things out inside the tent.... The tent build for tough blizzard like camping! Waiting for the shivers to ease...! WTG 🥶
Hilleberg, Western Mountaineering, Helsport, all the companies I dream about buying stuff from. You have a nice complete system of the proper gear and equipment. Tough wind, definitely putting your system to the test. Nice camp
enjoyed your extended winter Snow blizzard camping in the open, testing you camping gear, you seemed to made out ok despite those blizzard brutal weather conditions, thanks for sharing your Camping journey with us, gave you a thumbs up 👍🏻,for awesome Camping ⛺️ Video production Content.
Good video. Tent looked like it was struggling a bit. One or two more poles make tunnel tent much stronger, stable and less noisy. That much flapping softens fabric and may make seams to leak
You are certainly putting yourself and your equipment to the test! Your camp boots/gaiters seem very practical, good to have. At least no worries about bears!
Well done - everything coordinated, and the final settle in for the night even looked comfortable ! I'm not going to be trying it myself, having dabbled a little with tents in a windy place many years ago - and only once & forever gave up such silly ideas ! But thank you for the experience, it was an interesting little film !
watching this on June, with my warm cat at my legs... huge respect, in night winter conditions- strong wind and about -12Celsius-, a few years ago i was barely able to walk 1km till a bus station. main reason for the struggle was the fact i needed sky goggles. to my defense i was tired after 8 h work. glad to see that human race wont be extinct in an ice age.
Nice vid work and nice to see such a test camp. I've been researching winter gear for US regions that are often -45C and that is how I came across your channel. I have done numerous day-hikes for my photography but it would be even better to extend my solo ranges further from the usual places in Montana, the Dakotas and Wyoming. You've given me additional food for thought, so thanks!
Hey Johnnie, thanks for watching! Would love to get out in the greater Yellowstone area in winter, Washakie, Teton wilderness, the Absarokas and Shoshone national forrest, do you venture out in these areas in winter?
@@NorwegianXplorer When I am able and not working, yes, whenever possible (not sufficiently often, though!). I avoid those areas most prone to high traffic and often seek lesser traveled wilderness areas. I have a number of places in the Absarokas, the Front Range up toward and including Glacier, the Bighorns (to include Bighorn Canyon and the Pryor Mountains) and in the badlands of western North Dakota still on my list to shoot in the winter. Probably enough to keep me busy for my remaining years, I admit :)
Thank you for the wonderful video. Today is the first time I'll be camping in a long time. Although, for me it will not be snowing rain is in the forecast. While it will not be as cold as your camp, for some of us in Hawaii we're freezing at temperatures below the mid 60's. Tonight the temperature is predicted to drop into the 50's - I'm actually taking thermals to keep warm. Thank you again for your videos.
@@NorwegianXplorer I live on Oahu, but have adventured on some of the other islands as well including in Haleakala on Mau. Keep up the great work. Aloha
🏆🏆🥇Top Class!! I really enjoyed this. I imagine how difficult that would be but you make it look so smooth. True professional. It is enjoyable to watch and listen to all natural sounds and your music is so transcending. Woww, I don't know which is the best, enjoying the coffee and waffles at night and sleeping in the night listening to nature only or waking up to the glorious view and smell the freshness enjoying first coffee and brekky for new day or the hiking itself in the snow. Great show!! Thank you so much. It's the best nature up north and so pretty! You have a lot of courage and strength. 💖💖🦄🌈🤗😘
12:04 A Norwegian friend gave me a great piece of advice when cooking inside the tent: Have your knife right next to you ready to go. S*** happens, you may need a quick way out. // Great video, very enjoyable. A couple of weeks ago l was pitching my Duomid in quite strong winds here in the UK (Lake District). So much fun!
I had a hilleberg najamanti but found it way too noisy in windy conditions for sleep - even with earplugs ! I much prefer the semi geodesic or fully geodesic designs for exposed pitches. I really enjoyed this video and am very jealous of where you live !
I'm a solo female outdoor camping female in all weather... I have Cousins in Oslo and my late Dad's 3rd Cousin lives there also... my maiden last name from my father was Gjavenis, over in Norway spelt differently, totally jealous of your winter's, this year I Wisconsin, USA we didn't see much, yet...
Awesome, by golly if it snows his weekend (and its supposed to) I am camping in the back yard. I wanna grow up and be like Jarl! Im now 65 yrs old and not sure I will make it?? lol. Thanks for the inspiration!
