i don't actually believe in block voting at Eurovision. countries vote for their neighbours because they know the artist/song and have the same musical tastes. This is not meant to cause any offense or to be negative cos most of the songs got points from all over Europe and deserved to however i thought it would be fun to do a compilation of how much certain countries do stay within their own region
Petra Mede summarized this in two verses: "Getting votes from your neighbors is a sure way to get your song disgraced. But when Sweden gets twelve points from Norway, it's clearly just good taste!"
When Greece and cyprus, and baltic countries give 12 points to each other Audience: Booooo And when scandinavian countries give 12 points to each other: Audience: Woooooow 👏
there's only about 2-3 Scandinavian countries in every final. The Balkans just do it even more obvious and ridiculously even if the songs are really bad...
@@superxero3837 ?????????????????????? That is a total lie, Portugal votes to whoever they want and barely even votes to Spain. Andorra is no longer in the Eurovision.
There is one pretty big difference: The Scandinavian countries don’t really vote for the neighbours with poor entries. Sure, when Norway send a really good song they get 12 from swe and den, but not if they send crap. And they don’t give ALL their points to neighbours. Balkan on the other hand, used to give every single point to neighbours regardless if they made an effort with their song or not. It was like they ignored all other nations even the winners. That is why the system had to change into the voting we have today. when the televote is combined to a mix we won’t have to see how self centered some nations are.
Narek Sargsyan Poland isn’t in good terms with Eastern European block either so let’s make friends and vote for each other, Czech Republic :P Just kidding, but anyway I’m going to vote for you this year because I love your 2018 entry. Wish you lots of points! You’ve been underrated last 2 years.
Thanks there, but I am not czech. I am Armenian . But I also love Czech Republic, and feel sorry for them, since their good songs do not receive proper points. Yeah, also Poland is a bit mocked by jury , that's real pain .
Yes... two countries ruin the whole voting system... Let me remind you the yugoslavic block, the the russian block and the scandinavic block. All of those blocks contain more than four countries each but yes the problem is greece and cyprus. Just two countries. Good job man...good job... Btw i didnt see you saying anything about spain portugal, germany austria, roumania moldova, turkey azerbaijan.
Tbh the balkan friendship society (ex yugo countries) is one of the funniest things in Eurovision! I love it because they always support their underrated neighbors :)
I find it cute that Slovenia and Croatia always vote for us. Especially Slovenia, since, unlike Croatia, they speak a different language and don't share that much pop-culture with Serbia. For Montenegro and Bosnia it is more expectable since, subversive politics aside, we are the same people with Montenegro (kinda like Greece and Cyprus) and half of Bosnia is within the "Serb Republic" plus basically every pop culture artist is shared among these countries.
I believe they just “get” each other, they have their own kind of sound which just sounds soo old and basic to other countries. Can’t fault them for going with what they know. I find Cyprus-Greece & Russia&Moldova worse.
Mothers and Daughters Greece - Cyprus Turkey - Azerbaijan Serbia - Montenegro Romania - Moldova Finland - Estonia Sweden - Norway Denmark - Iceland UK - Australia
Greece Cyprus aren't mother and daughter.Cyprus made an attempt to unite with Greece, it's the same nation, politics(mainly british, as they have a military base on the island)blocked the union and now there are 2 countries. In the other cases, the countries have distinct national identities and vote out of sympathy or cultural ties!
Greek diaspora in the UK is something like a few 60,000 that accounts for approximately 0.06% of the population. I dont think it has the power to determine a 12 when you have massive diapora populations in the UK like Spanish, French, Irish, Polish, Lithuanians and Romanians
I don't think cases like Sweden voting for Norway in 2009 are that serious, as there were several other countries voting for Norway that year. You should concentrate on cases where a participating country got its votes mainly from it's voting block. Perhaps you should exclude top five songs of each year throughout, as they probably get relatively high points from everywhere.
Norway in that year is the country( with the old system) that got the highest points ever and EVERY participating country gave it points so yeah he would have still won without the Scandinavian 12’s.
Thanks for the video :) Some of those really don't deserve to be called "block/neighbour/predictable voting" tho, for example the ones who actually won the contest. Marija Serifovic from Serbia won, so obviously she's going to get lots of points from the former Yugoslav countries, there's nothing wrong with that. Or Lena from Germany got loads of 12p from all around Europe, in fact Germany has 9 neighbours but only 2 neighbours gave Lena 12p, so it's kinda unfair to label the one time Switzerland didn't give its 12p to Serbia/Albania/Turkey as "block/neighbour/predictable voting" for Germany here :D And the one time Denmark didn't vote for Sweden/Norway/Finland/Iceland... Same goes for Alexander Rybak, Mans Zelmerlöw, Loreen and Emmelie de Forest. They WON, so of course the Nordic countries gave a lot of points to the winner in that year. Nothing wrong with that. Or when Germany gave 12p to Nadine Beiler from Austria, which was actually the first 12p from Germany to Austria in like 50 years or something :D Wasn't predictable at all, actually. It was only possible because Turkey wasn't in the final that year. The only predictable thing about that year was the 10p to Greece. And literally the same applies to Germany's 12p to Tom Dice from Belgium. Wasn't predictable at all. The predictable things here were, again, the high points to Turkey and Greece. Also Maja Keuc, Jelena Tomasevic etc were amazing and deserved those points :) And how does Netherlands and France voting for Denmark belong into this video? Or Denmark voting for Ireland? Am I missing some secret connection between those countries? :D
Nutzername92a Yeah, I think votes to countries that were top3/top5 in the contest is rarely block voting because we see other countries voting for them. But when it happens like last year with Greece and Cyprus - it is block voting.
this is not explained by politics. but just the neighboring people have a similar folklore and food and art. They understand the language and traditions and songs of each other. this is beyond any doubt sympathy sincere!
Yeah it kinda does. In Flanders (Dutchspeaking part of Belgium), the media publicly root for The Netherlands. However, their artists are quite known here and vice versa.
Yeah, ofcourse culture plays a big role in why people vote on their neighbours/people of the same culture. There are bad 100% generic songs that gets high points from it's neighbours though. That is literally political voting.
"Similar folklore..." What are you talking about? Most of the songs from Eurovision are very similar and have nothing in common with culture and folklor. And a lot of people even don't sing in their own languege (Germany 2018 - English, Sweden 2018 - English, Ukraine 2018 - English, Cyprus 2018 - English, Moldova 2018 - English so on).
Without actually hearing the songs in question, nor seeing the voting patterns of the other juries for these same songs, it's hard to say with any certainty that these votes were CAUSED by the countries being neighbors/within a block.
Oh pls, I'm not sure if u can find it on the internet but for instance in the 1st semi final in 2019 every single one of the Serbian jurors put Montenegro 1st. I mean, come on I think we all remember that dreadful performance. On the other hand I get it. They literally participated as Serbia & Montenegro until 2007. With the Nordics I think it's a different story. Yes, they all (except Norway) gave their 12 to Sweden in 2019, but Spain, the Netherlands, Armenia and Czech republic did too. Which is not the case with Serbia and Montenegro for instance. Another fun fact: None of the Nordic juries gave a single point to Iceland in 2019. Anyway it's not the exact same story with the Nordics and Serbia and Montenegro and also Cyprus and Greece, bc the Nordics don't gave that kind a connection with each other. Like they don't share the same language, they have never been 1 country and I also don't think they share the same stars. So if u wanna say something about this, do it right and do ur research. Again I kinda get why Serbia and Montenegro exchanged their 12 in 2019, they were the same nation, but it's not really how it should be bc that song and performance from Montenegro were really...not good
@@FeeESC I'm from Serbia and everything you said I already knew. I personally find this from 2019 1st semi final jurors voting for Montenegro really weird, because jurors from Serbia usually try to be "objective", except for 2016 2nd semi final when most of jurors voted for FYR Macedonia because of Kaliopi (as she is known well in Serbia) and in this case (which is weird, because they are unknown in Serbia).
@@miloseviczarko45 yes exactly, i actually knew they were unknown there. I mean i get why they gave 12 to Nevena, the music genre, the language, I assume she is well known there too. Btw I loved Kaliopi so I'm happy u gave her those 12 she definitely deserved to qualify
This year wasnt bad with block voting in the juries except for maybe North Macedonia (the 12 points to Serbia was kind of odd considering how the other countries' juries voted)
Not true. I was just watching the 2003 contest, and Germany gave Poland 12 points for their highly political (though in a peace-mongering way) song. (Just for one example of the country getting 12 points, I'm certain there are many more)
Neighbour votes are not so exepcted. But, in my memory, in ESC '98 "douze points" from North Macedonia (F. Y. R. Macedonia in that year) to Croatia were shocking and unexpected, which had given win to Israel
I don’t think 12 points between CH, GER or AT are predictable at all because for some reason they don’t really act like Cyprus-Greece, Romania-Montenegro, NL-Belgium and so forth, so whenever they vote for each other it’s quite a thrill haha
As Greeks we vote for Cyprus because we have the same language, the same culture, just two different countries.. they are called Greek-Cypriots for a reason.. however, I didn’t see anyone bat an eye for the northern countries voting in between them (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, The Netherlands, etc)
4:19 is it really block voting when germany won and everyone seemed to enjoy. same with 2007 with serbia. is that block voting too. and in 2009, with norway or sweden, and 2012
It was really noticeable when Belgian jury gave no points to France this year and for less hard to understand reasons the Maltese one gave no points to Italy their closest neighbours.
I mean, many people think Denmark and the Netherlands are the same country, so that might be why. Plus, the Dutch have a history of migration to Denmark back in the 15th century, so could be why.
See how they always choose the BEST song out of their block? Yes there is bias but a HUGE factor is song quality. No country is ever guaranteed a point if they don't put in the work, even russia or sweden
I always hate when the French presentator (with the francophone countries too) is the only one to speak French when they give their points...I feel like we are always the only one to not make the effort to speak English ! (I’m French)
La français est une des langues officielles de l'Eurovision, à partir de là je trouve que c'est justifié, ça fait du bien d'entendre du français dans cet univers de langue anglaise 😅
It's always hilarious to watch the block voting, especially when the songs get zero points from everyone else. Never a shock to see Greece and Cyprus at it, always makes me laugh. Some countries fortunately do have the imagination to vote for non neighbours.
Fact (just check it if you don't believe me): no 2 other countries have given each other as many points as Greece and Cyprus. Sure, other countries might be guilty of block/neighbour-voting, but Greece-Cyprus win this shameful 'competition' hands down. No other countries even come close! Funny how all Greeks/Cypriots in this thread don't even seem to understand that saying 'but we are the same nation' is not an excuse for voting for each other: it is a SONG contest in which you're supposed to vote for the song you like best - not for the COUNTRY you like best...
In my ideal 2021 voting, I really hate the song from Cyprus. It got 24 points and finished last. All of them are from Greece. And Finland came second last with 40 points, getting some from the Nordics and Estonia. Spain was third last with 48, with half of the points coming from Portugal.
Portugal actually received more points from France than Spain in it's entire eurovision history. Even these days we score higher in french jury rather than Spanish or Italian xD
Nordics are the worst for it, in 2008 Denmark was last to vote and gave their 8 to Norway, 10 to Iceland, and 12 to Sweden, all of whom were on the bottom of the board.
Hungary doesn’t have that close of a connection to Serbia, also Albania doesn’t have one with Italy. You should have included more Greece- Cyprus instead ;) and the year when Serbia was a favorite to win, I don’t think that counts.
us azeris always gave 12 points to turkey and so did they, but they don't participate now so we give our points to russia :) and they actually were the only ones who gave 12 points to chingiz
Italy doesn't receive any political points considering that San Marino gave us 12 points only twice, Albania gives us 12 because Sanremo is very popular and in 2019 they don't give top marks to us...
No offense but how is Austria voting for Serbia counted as block voting/neighbour voting? Marija and Serbia is nowhere related to Austria Denmark and France in 2013 is the same case
More than 250 thousand ethnic Hungarians living in the northern part of Serbia, which is called 'Vojvodina'. And this is a type of "diaspora" voting. Also nowadays, we enjoy a not so bad relationship.
But some countries has deserved the 12 points for example Iceland to Sweden in 2012 or it has a lot of example France to Denmark in 2013 or Spain to Portugal in 2017 it's not all politic but most of it i think is but anyway they have deserved
