I really appreciated your TLC and attention to detail. At first, I saw the tats and thought it would be an ok video (never judge a book by its cover LOL). But as I watched, you impressed everyone with how much meticulous work you did to get the foundation perfect. It was obvious that your heart was fully into this project. Thank you for this inspirational video.
Wow! I just barely figured out what I need to lay pavers under the edges of my deck for landscaping and went to Home Depot where I picked the exact same stuff you're using. All of it. Perfect timing to see your video. Now I know what my pavers will look like! Thanks man!
Thank you for a well made video. It was informative and thorough. I am currently working on a patio by myself and this was exactly what I needed. Thanks.
Hi, great video, loved that it was complete DIY without any need to rent machinery. Quick question: Did you compact the sand with the tamper before laying out the panels?
I feel i never gave you the answer you wanted to hear so if you want to get it level you need to build the ground up with hardcore, crushed concrete, type 1 base. It is basically small stones around an inch or 2 big and this needs to be compacted to get a solid base. If your slope is bad you may have to put a frame around the area to keep the aggregate in. Then you put your sand on top and compact that as well. Hope this helped
An important detail here: Andy is describing the use of a gravel base with a sand setting bed on top. It is critically important to put a water permeable geo-textile/weed fabric between between the rock and sand, in addition to the fabric beneath the gravel, between the soil and the gravel base (where heavy use will happen (driveways and vehicular or equine pathways)). The reason for this is that the gravel will migrate down into the native soil, and the sand will do the same with gravel unless the fabric is installed to block that movement, and that will cause the pavers to settle unevenly.
How deep did you dig down, before starting to do any additional work ? I am using the BrockPaverBase and 12 by 12 patio paver. Thank you for all of you knowledge a
Ok, am I seeing this right, level the dirt, lay the landscape fabric, spread the sand, place the paver panels, then lay the pavers. I'm still trying to level the dirt with a slight slope away from the house, I have purchased everything else. Hoping to do this in one day.
The patio is still exactly the same as the day I done it. If you subscribed I did a video this year on armour a concrete sealer and I used this product on the patio and wall. The patio has not sunk or anything, very happy with it.
Awesome video Andy! I’m actually using it to do my own 11x7 patio...just one question, why didn’t you link all the materials you used? I’m playing a guessing game here lol...
Would it be possible to roughly level out the ground, put a frame on it, put down the barrier, put down the gravel, put down the sand, put down another barrier, put down the pavers (i just leveled the little monsters under a 15ft above ground intex pool so I'm not completely green) and level them to each other, then fill in between with pea gravel? And that be reasonably solid? I actually just used water to tamp the sand and that seemed to work really well. My pool hasn't moved. I really, really don't want to dig down. To be honest, I'm not sure I can. And those boards would be over $700 for the amount I'd need. I've already planned to put up and fill a 4in border around the pool to help protect the base under it from water erosion with a 2 or 3 step path to the patio coming off the pool. It's already 4in off the ground. A 2x6 frame would only add two inches. If the pavers extended 2in above that at most it's a 4 in difference that I can soften simply by stair stepping the pavers on the path between the pool and the patio so the last step is slightly above the 2x6 making the difference between the pavers on the patio and the pavers on the path negligible at 2in or so. A 2x6 board for edging is not cute but I'm sure there's something I could do with that. Maybe even stain the frame so it looks intentional and that would help protect it from the weather. What do you think?
Solid video mate. Appreciate the notes with the details as you moved along. I'm looking to do a similar (though larger in scope) project soon. Unfortunately, I have to remove a 10x10 concrete patio before I can begin. It's very old and sinking into the yard. Plan to break it up and put in a new paver base patio system with a bigger footprint. Thanks for the detailed video and I hope it proves a solid build without drainage issues or such. I like the rain barrel and the water catch system you have. Did you do a video of that as well ?
I didn't do a video on the rain barrel wish I did, also I didn't do a video of drainage which is where that down pipe goes in the patio and around the patio to a foot deep drainage pit. Thanks for subscribing
Nice job, thanks for posting this. I went ahead and bought these panels at Home Depot after watching your video. Question: When you laid the panels up against the wall, did you trim the flange? I'm wondering if it's OK to do that because there will be a little gap between the panel and the pavers along the edge. (Or between the panel and the sand, depending on which way you lay the panels down..)
I did not trim anything from the 2 walls. I was lucky that they were actually square. If they were not square then yes, without a doubt scribe them in.
I'm guessing from your user name, you're in England? Curious as you've talked about how well these have lasted but if you don't mind tell us what country (or state/region if in a larger country) you're in, so we can get a feel for how well it's lasted in that climate. Thanks!
what type of sand did you for leveling before paving the Brock paver base?? how depth is leveling sand you did? it's really helpful and much appreciated.
@@EnglandAndy , hi Andy: it was so confused since there are so many types of sand in lowes or homedepot. I am living in Toronto Canada, we planning to a patio with brock paverbase, but there are many types of sand on the market, (ie lowes.ca/ homedepot.ca/rona.ca etc.) could you send me a link for the proper leveling sand should we use in Canada? your help will be much appreciated and thanks very much.
@@EnglandAndy unfortunately this product is not available in Canada. 0.5 cu. ft. Step 2 Paver Leveling Sand is from homedepot.com (for US) and homedepot.ca (for Canada) doesn't have it. any other sand product for suggestion? much appreciated and thanks very much Andy.
Still holding up , all perfectly level . The only thing is weeds around the perimeter where the permisand has broken away but that has nothing to do with the brock paver
Nice video! Just wondering about the paver base around the edge that shows...did you leave it like that, or did you put grass or anything over it? I'm in N. FL and wondering if I can put sod over it or grow grass up to the paver edge. Thanks!
I used a plastic edging from Lowes so it never went anywhere. When i finished this video i did back fill to the edge. I have a new video about a seating block wall which is actually attached to the patio and i take some of the edge up but you can see what the patio looks like .
Great work and video! For the edging did you factor the additional space outside of the finished area for 1) the number of panels you used and 2) Edging restraints? The brock paver base website while highly informative did not go into detail, the gator base site mentions a 6" additional area to dig on each side for supporting the edging to be driven into the base panels. Maybe Im over thinking it as the bricks are not exactly 8x4 but a small variation which the paver base panels may account for allowing for the additional room for edging.
Thank you, Yes, I over estimated by 10% and when I finished kept what I needed and took the rest back to the store. I Think I only took some blocks back and about 3 bags of sand thou.
Thanks you, i leveled the dirt out so at the moment grass will be flush with the path. I have another video i am going to make but not for a while because there is a lot of work in the garden and am still doing it.
I just started digging for my patio now and I am using brock paver base. I was curious of how you would tackle a yard with a slight slope already in place. The area is not very large, about the size of yours. Is there a way to make the pavers level on top by leveling out the base sand on the bottom?
To be honest, it still looks the same as the day i did it except it's dirty. i think if you have a solid foundation you'll be fine. My foundation is just sand but i tamped the shit out of that, wet it down and tamped it again. I did this around 4 times before I actually started. I did another video of patio updated, I guess there's another video coming up of The update to the updated patio.
so what is the point or purpose of using the brock paver base if you have used the rock and sand. Just another layer. these projects keep growing. My experience over 12 yrs with a patio we built the sand is waste and a losers. other people still get the weeds, when your pressure wash all of the sand blows out and moves around.
The paver base means you do not need the hardcore base but you need sand regardless whether it's a gravel, concrete or paver base. Mine has been down quite a while now and i have zero weeds, zero movement . I used polymeric sand between the blocks and no weeds. I was unsure about this product but I gave it a try and I like it but not the price. I would definitely use this product again.
Looking to use the Brock paver base. How well has it held up since completion? Also did you use the pvc pipe for just leveling the sand or did you leave them in?
Thanks Ryan, I wish i had more time in the garden but i have other things more important things to take care of first. It will get finished eventually.
Hmm! Mine has no bounce, spring or any give. I weigh 200 LBS and can jump up and down all day and there is NO bounce. The blocks i used are 2 inches thick with 1 inch of compacted sand. But that's just my opinion, i am still happy with the work that the the guy done (ME) and would recommend him. Seriously, 3 inches of product before the paver, i have no bounce.
3 month review? How is that base still holding up? I've seen them but they look like it might be easier for the pavers to shift on top of those squares.
Great job, this gives me hope. I am also in NW Fl. , never did anything like this before , as I was in a condo in WI. My patio area is already dug out as there was one there. The concrete was removed because of popcorn tree roots from neighbors tree cracking it up. Is it required to use sand fill to seal pavers? Not sure if 12x12 or smaller ones would be better with all the rain. Home Depot has Sierra blend in different sizes so that I could mix and match. Just saw these Brock paver base for the first time, you make it look like I could do this.
Thank you and yes you can do this no problem, You can use any size pavers but imo using normal sand would either wash away or have weeds growing through them
Look at my last few videos and you'll get a quick look . I think the paver base is awesome and worth every penny. Patio is still solid and looks really good 3 years on.
@@EnglandAndy Sorry for the late response. I put polymeric sand between the pavers. The bricks bonded pretty well. I am in up in North East. I hope this patio holds up in the winter.
@@EnglandAndy so glad to read that you are in Florida! So there are no issues with the Brock paver base due to high heat during the summer? I want to use it for a narrow (15.5’’) path around my screen enclosure, so that the lawn doesn’t come all the way to the screen. It won’t have much traffic, just when I go around to wash the screen, on occasion. Thank you!
@@maple8859 No issues except the price. The patio is still perfect and weed free. No shifting. I will do an end of year update of my garden and it will be in there.
Dianne, the strings are guides. I wanted the house wall to be straight, i wanted the pool deck to have a slight slope away from the house but a big slope diagonally from the drain. When setting out you have to add the sand, paver base and block height and then set your strings to that height. If i did not use them i would be guessing the height of the patio meaning it could be too low or too high .To high means the pool deck door won't open.
The major point of your video is the plastic or rubber base that you used that separate your construction method from all other patio construction using paver. But you did not even talk about or explain anything about this material. explaintalk about
