You know once those Leach pipes holes are full of roots they're pretty much done with. They are not like regular sewage pipes where you can blast out the roots and get it flowing again. Once the holes are plugged with roots there's nothing you can do but dig them out and put new pipes in and Surround it with new gravel. But you gave us some time to get up the money to do that.

Run down to Supercheap Auto and pickup a long bladed screwdriver. Stick it in the ground and loop your light over it. No more stinky light.

Good chance he's WAY over due to pump that tank and the sludge went into the drain fields. Over time, they are now too clogged to do anything but start from scratch. A few quick trenches and a few yards of stone will do the trick. That's a cheap repair for a septic system, being only 8-10 meters for each line. (under 100 feet total for the USA folks)
