Not only did jimmy predict the computer generated music… But you catch him saying the word hologram near the very end… This is one guy who knew the business.

Computerised forty years on every singing stars computerised. Remember the lyrics in the Blondie song Picture This from 1977. At the end of the song Debbie sings.. get a pocket computer try to do what you used to do YEEEEAH. No one had heard of a pocket computer now the world is over run with them.

What he predicted for 1988 was already reality in 1978 (date of interview) in the case of Kraftwerk

chris and jimmy were both right... chris was right about alternative music post-new wave, and jimmy was way ahead of the times predicting the pop music of today with our ableton/garageband/etc programs and midi instruments. but when most people hear 'totally synthesized' music they will probably think of 80s synthpop.

And I can't get over how Blondie invented the 80s before it happened. How did they do that?

That was very prophetic! The song writer guy on the left really understands the trajectory of music at the time.

Jimmy nailed the future question. So many bands like Van Halen and Steve Winwood and the Cars added keyboards in the mid 80’s plus techno music took off in Europe.

The US punk/new wave movement was more varied in style, but concentrated in New York, a reaction against disco and the West Coast. In the UK, punk/new wave was more overtly political, during a very bad period in the late 70s. And the pre-1965 pop culture never disappeared, but just went underground. In the late 70s, it resurfaced as punk and new wave. But Blondie had a very heterogeneous style, rejecting and yet imitating disco, cleverly making use of 50s-60s pop sound to get radio airtime, etc.

Debbie's platinum hair but even platinum face. She's so pale. A whiter shade of pale. The other members look just jellow. It's rumoured that in 1977 or 1978 they interrupted a tour around there because Deb was sick. They talk about cliches in rock mainstream but some Blondie's members themselves - as used by rockstars - want to look like Ray Charles o Stevie Wonder ;-) A Blondie's music true admirator.

New Wave or whatever it was tended to reject what became known as rockism. Rock is just very narrow-minded, which is why it's basically gone. Blondie never bought into the anti-disco hysteria. That's another way they turned out to be right.

If I may answer: Punk and NewWave was shaped first by these interviewed, plus those that ran around the same places inspiring each other in 1973-75 - in New York. The Stillettos that Debbie left to join Blondie in 1975, sounds quite punk. All non-political, as Jimmy Destri say’s isn’t absolutely correct either, for those remembering Patti Smith being part of this upcoming of new music styles. The angry aggressive upbeat was heard in the UK, and instantly linked to politics - criticism of adult conformity, and to individualism divided in so many directions it wasn’t really clear who “owned” or should relate to which bands and styles(!). UK coined the term Punk77, quite unaware in retrospective this means Punk and New Wave came over the ocean from someone like Stein, Harry and Clem Burke. (His drumming is a vital element.) Then, punk as more sorted out is typically Sex Pistols (a commercial enterprise by their manager, so skillfully done that the members didn’t even understand it), Clash and certainly girls like The Slits. Nina Hagen escaped the walls of Berlin, adding vitality and criticism of society too. Glad they were completely off the bat with regards to longevity of New Wave! (Or whatever it is … as sorting here is a sport difficult to win, as the rules are floating.) Cool video - thanks!
