Blood Rage Review

Yeah, they work well enough for those already familiar with the terms, but I find they're really inadequate with newer games and newer players who aren't familiar with the distinction. Thematic games have incorporated some more gamey mechanics and Euros have started adding more theme, generally speaking. I had a fun time the other day explaining to a newer gamer why "thematic" didn't apply to only licensed properties, and I am sure he still wasn't satisfied with the answer. I think the breakdown for me was when people started calling Eclipse a Euro, and I was like "NOPE." Someone will need to come up with new terms eventually, but it's what we got at the moment.

Lluis Fontanella Yup, though some of those terms need updating too as so many mechanics have become hybridized.

+TheGreatHamEl I agree that most terms nowadays aren't as useful as they were. I don't think they need updating. The whole paradigm needs tossing out. Or just leave it as it is, and another one based purely on theme needs to be created.

Well, who's got time for that anyways? :) Just spit balling. I mean, the takeaway is that games are evolving, and that is a good thing.

I think with five players, it can be. But, (to me) not excessively so. It works really well at all player counts imo.

Hmm.. That would be a tough one. Neither game is really best with two. I prefer Blood Rage over Cry Havoc though. The Cry Havoc two player is probably better however, but still you really want a full boat with Cry Havoc, and Blood Rage is better at all the different counts, except for two.

Will have that in mind. I will go tomorrow and buy Blood Rage then. At some time, I will get Star Wars Rebellion. Saw your review, seems like a nice game. All the games I played before are Firefly, Dead of winter, Battlestar Galactica... But nothing was like Blood Rage, looking foward to this.

This game is amazing! Had 10+ game by now and every time is better. New options, leaving the table and thinking about the cards and combos. So glad I got this. I played Cry Havoc the other night with my friends and BR works so much better for me. Saw your review on Netrunner so I got that as well. :D Another great game.

I've not played Hate, but I would choose Blood Rage for sure. It's still one of my all time favorites.

+Hitchslapped I've only played it at 5 player so far because whenever I say I'm bringing it, people trip over themselves to show up. It works really well I think. I don't have the other player counts to base off of yet but really all it adds is one more zone to be conquered each Age and of course more people involved in every fight. You get more duplicate cards so I kind of feel like it wouldn't be much different than with 4 players.

Hmm...I really like both themes, vikings and northern mythology is a nobrainer for me, and Gangs of New York is one of these movies I never get sick of. Are they mechanically similar? If yes, Blood Rage should be my choice, cause of the minis. What about the interaction grade and which one is more backstabby?

They are both backstabby. I favor Blood Rage because of the card drafting. Both can be brutal.
