Bloodsport (1988) First Time Watching! Movie Reaction!! 

Sometimes you just need a cheesy 80s movie to brighten up your day! Sam and I had so much fun with this one! What are some other Jean-Claude Van Damme movies we should watch!? Thank you all for the support!

I once had a girlfriend who could quote this entire movie word for word. So I married her 😁 11 years later she is still just as awesome.

8:45 - Chong Li was quoting Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon (1973) who said the same thing to his opponent who was trying to show off before the fight. The actor who played Chong Li (Bolo Yeung) also starred with Lee in Enter the Dragon.

"Jean-Claude retired from martial arts in 1982, following a knockout over Nedjad Gharbi in Brussels,Belgium. Jean-Claude posted a 18-1 (18 knockouts) Kickboxing record, and a Semi-Contact record of 41-4." Yeah, Van Damme was legit kickboxer.

The Chinese who played Frank’s tour guide in this was an owner of a local video rental store in Hong Kong, and we used to go in there and chat with him about Blood Sport in the 90s as teens. He was really proud of his role in the movie. What I really like about 80s martial arts movies is they really focused on the different styles of martial arts, so the stylistic diversity always made them interesting, and back then there was still a lot of mystery around martial arts, so a movie like Blood Sport felt almost magical to watch (for an 11 year old boy). I find that movies these days that incorporate martial arts feel a lot more generalized in terms of style, which make all the fight scenes feel more generic and less interesting as a result… The acting was never great, but nobody watched these movies for the acting, even back then, but I think the bar was also quite a bit lower compared to today’s standard of acting. Regardless these were really great films to watch, and didn’t rely as heavily on special effects, so you know a lot of the people in this were real martial artists… and to that point, JCVD was a Karate expert, Chung Li whose name is Bo Lo Young was a champion body builder who also did King Fu, the Chinese guy in the gold pants they Chung Li killed was a well known Kung Fu teacher in Hong Kong. The place where the Kumate was held in the movie was in a place in Hong Kong called the Walled City (now torn down). It was a piece of land that was owned by the Chinese government and kept when the British colonized Hong Kong in the 1850s, but as the Chinese government changed hands to the Communists after WW2, nobody took ownership of the landed where the walled city was (back then it was a Chinese fortress), so all these illegal structures were built on the land which eventually formed into a crazy dense mass of concrete buildings and structures one of top of the other, which formed dark tunnels on the inside, like in the movie. Because neither the Chinese nor Hong Kong government technically owned the land, the Hong Kong police didn’t have jurisdiction over it, so it became a common place for criminals to escape to, and for the local mafia (triads) to hold illegal events like this fighting competition, in it without concern for the police. The Walled City was like a city within a city, with its own doctors, dentists, restaurants etc inside, but the Hong Kong government decided it was too dangerous due to the illegal structures, and decided to tear it down in the mid 90s… that was the official party line of the government, but the reality was they wanted to make room for new property developments, and they said they would relocate the people that were displaced by it, but only a small fraction of people managed to attain government assisted housing once they were forced to leave. Anyway, the Walled city is a very interesting and unique piece of Hong Kong history worth checking out. You can read about it on Wikipedia. Other Van Damme movies worth watching are Kickboxer, Lion Heart, Double Impact. If you want more 80s martial arts goodness, you should also check out Steven Seagal movies from that time (not his new stuff), like Above the Law and Marked for Death. There was also a huge Ninja with movies like Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja, and the American Ninja movie series… the Ninja movies have probably the worst acting, but we’re super fun, and basically rode on the mystique of the Ninja.

28:12 Yes! This movie is based on a true story, the true story of the true martial arts legend Frank Dux. It was absolutely 100% true and totally not in any way completely fabricated by a crazy liar/conman, who is also named Frank Dux.

The film received mixed reviews by Critics but became a box office hit, making $50 million dollars against a $2.3 million dollar budget.

One of the best things about this movie is the fact that a future Academy Award winner for best actor Forest Whitaker, is in this as kind of comic relief.

"I feel like that guy is just here to party". Most accurate description of that character ever.

Bolo Yeung, who played Chong Li, worked with Bruce Lee in _Enter the Dragon_ -- besides having had a long career in the Hong Kong's martial arts films. He's sort of a legend of his own. Great choice for the antagonist in this movie.

To men in their 40s this movie is everything. An era of their life know word for word. My aim was to go to Hong Kong and re-enact the steal the night scene...never got to, did Kickboxers streets of Siam in Bangkok instead.

Funny thing about the “Bad Guy”, Chong Li, The actor who plays him, Yang Sze (aka Bolo Yeung) is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I only knew him from his roles in Bruce Lee films and from Bloodsport, so I half way expected a villain, but the dude is super chill and humble.

“Aren’t you a little old…for video games?” And I took that personally. (Game Designer/Dev here🙂)

One of Van Damme's ABSOLUTE best movies EVER!!!

If this was your first JCVD movie, you gotta realize some tropes about him: he always does splits in every movie, his characters almost always have an in-universe reason for sounding French (either raised in Quebec, Louisiana, Belgium or France).

The actor who played Chong Li also starred in Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee. When he tells Frank Dux very good but brick not hit back, He took that line from Bruce Lee who told a fighter very good but board not hit back.

This is the movie that made me fall in love with martial arts movies. There were a lot of late-80s, b-movies that focused on martial arts (Best of the Best, Van Damme, Seagal, etc.)...even as a little kid I could tell they were cheesy, but I watched them often.

Bruce Lee’s ‘Enter the Dragon (1973)’. Bolo Yeung (Chong Li) is in it and that’s where most first noticed him. He does have a greatly intimidating screen presence

People say that Commando isn't the best Schwarzenegger movie but it is the MOST Schwarzenegger movie. I feel similarly about this. It's not the best Van Damme movie but it is the MOST Van Damme movie.

I have no idea why but ever since the very first time I watched this film everytime Jackson says "You know you better stop doing that stuff, you might wanna have kids one of these days", I just crease up with laughter.

Universal Soldier is my favorite Jean Claude movie, you guys should really check it out

I was so lost not remembering the whole flashback beginning, but then realized I was thinking of The Quest. Also, I believe Van Damme did ballet, which is how he was so flexible.

I remember seeing this in theaters back in the 80s with my Dad. Great memories. It was one of the most fun films, but you had to kind of be a fan of martial arts films to enjoy it. For a kid of the 80s, it didn't get any cooler than Jean Claude Van Damme.

Am I the only one who's favorite part of all of these videos is when Samantha says hello? I love that little sing-song she throws on it.

When Frank said "This truly is a Bloodsport" I got MAJOR chills.

This is without doubt the greatest martial arts movie ever made. Made on a lie, but the creativity of the fight scenes, setting(kowlon walled city which no longer exists), characters, music, story of tanaka's family loss etc, were all inspired. The soundtrack is one for the ages.

Speaking of 80s movies: is there a chance for "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Police Academy"?

Love the movie. It's a shame that the real Frank Dux was a liar and made up all of this. But just ignore the "true story" nonsense and it's an entertaining bit of '80s shlock!

At the time, this movie was loosely based on real events. Frank Dux is a real person, an American-Canadian fighter who claims to have been trained as a ninja in his youth, served as a US Marine, awarded with a Medal of Honor, worked for the CIA, and won the underground martial-arts tournament Kumite in 1975. It's amazing what people believed before the internet. After over a decade of working in Hollywood as a fight choreographer and stunt coordinator, it all came out that it was a lie; Dux's entire claim was a fabrication. If you read any info on him now, with actual research and military records, the guy is President of crazy-town.

Frank Dux’s sensei was the legendary Tiger Tanaka, who trained the real James Bond in the art of ninjutsu. Later, the two of them teamed up to fight Spectre, the terrorist organization led by the mysterious Blomfeld. Tiger taught Dux everything he knew, including the skill of not really existing at all.

You guys made me laugh so much. I didn't realize how cheesy this movie was. But this is an 80s classic and one of my favorite movies growing up.

Jean-Claude in "Timecop" (1994), "Double Impact" (1991), "Lionheart" (1990), "Universal Soldier (1993), "Nowhere to Run" (1992), "Hard Target" (1993). To name a few.

As far as other Van Damme films go, I highly recommend watching _Kickboxer,_ _Universal Soldier_ and _Hard Target._ They're probably his three most iconic movies, aside from _Bloodsport._ _Double Impact_ is also a good one, with Bolo Yeung (Chong Li) in another role, and A.W.O.L. is a personal favourite of mine. Since you're getting into martial arts films now, you should also watch Bruce Lee's _Enter the Dragon._ It's the most iconic martial arts movie of all time, features Bolo Yeung in an early role, and was referenced in _Bloodsport._ (You'll probably get the reference if and when you see it.) As _Cobra Kai_ fans, you might want to take a look at _Shootfighter_ at some point; it's not a classic of the genre by any means, but it's decent enough, and features William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), Martin Kove (John Kreese), and Bolo Yeung in major roles.

This film has no right being as good as it is. One of the really cool things is that some of this film was shot in the Kowloon Walled City, one of the few films ever to be filmed there. Especially since it no longer exists.

Kick boxer, Double Impact, LionHeart, Hard Target, Nowhere to Run, Cyborg, JCVD...... he has so many good films.

There are actually three direct-to-video sequels. The second one Donald Gibb who plays Jackson comes back not as a fighter but as like a handler. Van Damme doesn't come back for any of them. Instead they have an actor named Daniel Bernhardt who plays Alex Cardo in 2 and 3 and a different character named John Keller in 4. If you've seen Matrix Reloaded he plays Agent Johnson. He was also the Russian hitman Kirill in John Wick and had a cameo as a tribute from District 9 in Hunger Games: Catching Fire. For other Van Damme movies to watch I would recommend Hard Target (Van Damme with a mullet, American actor Wilford Brimley - who did the Quaker Oats and Liberty Medical diabetes commercials - with a cajun accent, Arnold Vosloo - Imhotep from the Mummy - as a henchman), Kickboxer, Universal Soldier, Lionheart (it's got fighting but it's also very heart warming), Street Fighter (the second movie made from a video game, lots of cheesy lines and a scene you might recognize as a meme) and for an unusual pairing Double Team with Dennis Rodman.

There is a Bloodsport 2, but sadly it doesn't tell the totally true story of how Frank Dux won World War II singlehandedly in 11 seconds, beating his previous record, armed only with a slinky and his bare butt. Then, he cured COVID by doing the splits.

One of my favorite movies! So much 80's cheese, nostalgia for an era I never lived in.

The Asian guy with glasses who is with Frank & Ray is actually the assistant director Ken Siu. He also worked on anther Van Damme movie Kickboxer, Rush Hour, In The Mood For Love, Forbidden Kingdom

Expendables 2 kind of convinced me that Van Damme would be an excellent bond villain. Also Universal Soldier, Time Cop, and Kickboxer are all fun.

Interestingly 'Bloodsport' is one of the few movies to feature actual footage from inside Kowloon Walled City before it was demolished in 1993. Also for there to be 56 consecutive knockouts in a single tournament would require over 72 quadrillion participants at the start, which is over 10 million times the human population of the entire Earth.

Some of his better movies to also check out are Kickboxer, Timecop, Double Impact, and Universal Soldier that also has Dolph Lundgren in it

This film was made 12 yr before my birth. I met Van Damme when I was 14 yr old running laps on my high school quarter mile track. I ran on one side of the oval and he on the opposite side. The centre of the oval was a lawn and I had a habit of placing my backpack and water bottle there so I could see it from the perimeter. This was like 07:00 am. Suddenly this fellow sprints out of nowhere and grabs my bag running off with it and this really fit and muscular guy yells in a French accent (actually Belgium) "He's got your bag!" I hesitate in shock for a second and start chasing the thief, but I wasn't fast enough when this "French" guy just takes off after him. The thief, realizing he would be caught, tosses my bag and ends the heist. The French guy picks up my bag and brings it over to me. It was then I realized it was the martial artist/actor, Van Damm. "I've seen your work in the theaters. Why you here?" "Scouting for locations in the city to film...but here...I am just training. Here's your bag." "Thanks Jean, I'm Diane. I go to school here in the Autumn." "Pleased to meet you, Diane." He begins to walk away and turns abruptly..."Hey, the next time, tie a long rope to your bag and the other end to the fence. Guy snatches bag and runs. Rope runs out and snaps bag out of his arms. If he holds on too tightly then the suddenly stopping bag takes the running guy down with it." "It works?" "I saw a video where they attach these bicycles to trees with a really long rope. Bike thief thinks he's got a good catch, rides off with bike at full speed. Rope runs out and snaps bike right from under them. They face plant in the ground. Very funny. But not for the thieves. Hey, have a good morning!" "Hey, thanks for the bag and lesson!" From the top of my head Jean-Claude Van Damme specializes in shotokan, Muay Thai, taekwondo, and some jiu-jitsu. He might know more than that

Bolo Yeung was in Enter the Dragon. The line "Very good, but Brick don't hit back." was a homage to Bruce Lee from that movie. Bruce Lee "Board don't hit back" when his opponent broke a board in front of him before they fought.

Fun Fact: Van damme is the inspiration for the Johnny Cage character in Mortal Kombat. They have Johnny Cage do a similar nut punch to Prince Goro in the Mortal Kombat 1995 movie.

One of my favorite movies when I was a kid. It offers a rare look inside the Kowloon Walled City, which has an interesting history and was torn down in the '90s.

I love how you two are willing to still like a movie that has acting flaws. Lionheart is my favorite Van Damme, followed by Double Impact. Both with dubious acting/writing, but still so good! Instead of actors doing iffy martial arts, you get martial artists doing iffy acting. Love it!

Bolo Yeung telling him, :Very good,....but brick....don't hit back"....was a nod to 'Enter The Dragon' where Bruce Lee's character said the same line (only it was a board and not a brick) to a guy right before he kicked his ass. Bolo Yeung was also in that movie.

The fighter who got his leg broken was portrayed by Michael Qissi, a childhood friend of JCVD. He has roles in several JCVD films, including the fearsome Tiger Tong Po in Kickboxer.

Excellent movie!!! I'm SO HAPPY you guys are watching this!! One of my all-time favorite martial arts films. Unfortunately Frank Dux lied about this story too bad though. I can recommend a few Van Damme films like Kickboxer, Time Cop, Double Impact, Lion heart, JCVD, Hard Target and Universal Soldier!! I forgot to mention that Johnny Cage's character and split legged nut punch was inspired from this movie.

Most influential martial arts movie ever

The 80s martial movies made me and my brother tough as hell. We used to chop ice cubes on the counter because of Karate Kid. We used to see who could last the longest kicking each other back and forth like in this movie. We practiced grabbing at fish in water and would see who could hold the spilts the longest. My kids do tik tok dances….

Good martial art movie. You should watch Kickboxer as well, Death Warrant, Double Impact. Of course you should watch Enter the Dragon.

Finally! The film that made Mortal Kombat possible! Great film with some of the best martial arts action ever. I know it's probably Cobra Kai that put this on your radar. You should check out what I believe is Van Damme's first film, No Retreat, No Surrender. Basically the Plan 9 From Outer Space of martial arts films. And it's a blatant rip off of The Karate Kid. It's L.A. karate vs. Seattle karate. Seriously. It's so bad, it's good. The final fight is really good, though.

My childhood hero Van Damme! There is a lot of fun hero to be done...Van Damme has altleast 5-10 movies that you should watch..I guess Kickboxer is next and Then Lionheart.. You will not regret it!

These movies were our thing in the early 90s - watch Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Rocky etc and then either train or fight with your friends :D My mom actually didn´t let us go to the video store by our own because after we got a movie one of us would always be injured :D :D :D

If you like martial arts flicks you really need to see Ip Man with Donnie Yen and Ong Bak with Tony Jaa. Now I think about it Jet Li did an underrated gem called Kiss of the Dragon and if you're too young to have seen any Bruce Lee you might enjoy Enter the Dragon or some of Jackie Chan's early stuff like Police Story and Project A. For more JCVD you can watch Kickboxer, another 80's classic, Universal Soldier, Hard Target (directed by John Woo!) or... JCVD.

I forgot just how awesomely 80's this movie was. ❤️ My suggestions for more of his films are Timecop and Universal Soldier, which would also get you another Dolph Lundgren movie. And speaking of Dolph Lundgren, my favorites of his' are Red Scorpion and I Come In Peace (this may have been renamed Dark Angel).

​Kumite or Mixed Martial Arts fighting goes back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mitsuyo Maeda was trained in Judo and Jiu-Jitsu and went on to do hundreds of challenge matches in North America, he would later end up in Brazil and one of his students was Carlos Gracie. Going back further, Jiu-Jitsu was used on the battlefield by weaponless samurai. It's theorized the martial art was brought to Japan via people who interacted with Alexander the Great's armies in the Middle East and India. At the time it would've been called Pankration and was actually an early Olympic sport. So Mixed Martial Arts type fighting has been around in some form for about 2700 years.

For the rational folks - 'Writing in the book Actions Speak Louder, Eric Lichtenfield said that, when his exploits are questioned, Dux counters by "actually exploiting his lack of substantiating evidence, and spinning it" into even wilder stories.[33] Dux says that the reason he no longer has a sword he was presented with at the Kumite is that he sold it in a failed attempt to buy the freedom of a boat of orphans whom he later rescued from pirates,[2][33] and that he once stopped a plot to assassinate Steven Seagal.' 😂

Great movie and reaction. This is one of a few movies that actually shows footage of the inside of Kowloon's Walled City (dark alley towards the Kumite) that was demolished in 1993. There are some documentary's about it but the quality is not HD like in Bloodsport. That place has always fascinated me. Anime like Ghost in the Shell heavily are inspired by the aesthetics of that place. Cyberpunk related games/movies are also influenced by it's architecture with Japan style neon added.

I stayed up till 4am to watch this, never been so excited for a reaction, just one of my faves for decades. Bolo Yeung (Chong Li) does star in another film with Van Damme called 'Double Impact'. There's at least 3 Bloodsport sequels but they don't feature Van Damme, Ray Jackson is in one and Pat Morita is in a couple. They did sorta reuse this films plot for 'The Quest' starring Van Damme and Roger Moore, now there's a joyfully odd team up. :)

Paco's fighting style is Muay Thai. It's identified by the march he uses in his stance, the kicks to the legs, the clinch he uses before throwing knees, and the shortness of his shorts.

Fun fact: Johhny cage attire in the first mortal kombat video game was inspired by Jean claude Van Damne. The last fight he wore was black tights with a yellow belt. In the video game mortal kombat johnny wore the same attire but instead with a red belt. Van Damne was offered to play the role Johhny cage in the first movie Mortal Kombat in 1995. But turned it down because he was already set for the movie street fighter to play as Guile.

This is 80's cheese at its finest; gloriously hilarious as well as genuine, with heart. The fighting was entertaining, fast-paced and very well choreographed, to the point where you find yourself wincing as though you were the one getting a flying, spinning roundhouse heel to the face! "Lionheart" is another great 80's action movie by Van Damme. Great reaction guys! ( :E

Despite some of the claims at the end of the movie, Frank Dux is quite the storyteller. There are some pretty good videos on RU-vid that break down just how ridiculous of a fraud he is.

Some fun trivia: 1. Much of this film was the inspiration for the original Mortal Kombat 1, which originally was not meant to be a fighting game at all, but an action game. 2. They had actually attempted to cast Van Damme for the main role of the game as himself. Van Damme turned it down, and they instead created the character Johnny Cage, which is why Johnny looks so much like Frank Dux in Bloodsport. 3. The inspiration for Johnny Cage's splits punch also came from this movie, when Frank split punches the sumo wrestler. 4. This film is marketed as a film based on true events, but this has since been proven false, or at least has never been proven to be true. Frank Dux is known to embellish and flat out lie about many aspects of his life, including in this film, where he has never been able to prove any of this took place, or even that such an event called the Kumite exists.

As a Belgian like Jean-claude and a kid in the 80's he was my absolute hero! The real Frank Dux is a bullshido artist. He lied about the kumite and his achievements, but since fact-checking is difficult without the internet a lot of people got carried away with his story. Jean-claude and crew adapted it into a movie and it was a great succes. His ass is hard and he does a split in almost every film. It is his "I'll be back". All the fighters were real fighters hand-picked for the movie. This film even inspired the first UFC's. *edit* BARE! His ass is bare in every movie. Dutch autocorrect 🙂

Okay I've been watching you guys for awhile and Samantha's reaction to the splits ball punch is my favorite moment on your channel ever. I'm dying laughing here. I haven't seen this movie in forever but I swear to God when I was a kid my older brother watched this like every other day so I've probably legit seen this movie like 50 times.

19:05 was the direct inspiration for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat. It is believed that this film was also a big influence on the rest if the game too. Also check out the Revenge of the Nerds films specifically the character Ogre, he may look familiar 😁

I really met Frank Dux when I was in my early twenties. He lived next door to a friend of mine. He drove a gold colored Porsche 914 with "DNINJA" for his license plate. Was a nice guy.

Great movie and great review. I always love your discussions after the movies. In regards to Bloodsport whenever our kids fight in the house we always tell them "No Kumite in the house!" So yeah, my wife and I love this movie.

Gotta do more martial arts films, I highly recommend Above The Law (Steven Seagal). The plot is interesting and Seagal's fight choreography was innovative, added a new dimension to hand to hand action. Classic

If you two enjoyed Jackson in this movie and want to stay in the 80s then you need to watch "Revenge of the Nerds". NEEEEERRRRRRDDDDDSSSSS!!!!!!

I'm late to the party, but wanted to add that virtually all the fighters in this movie were legit kickboxers, mixed martial arts or other discipline pro fighters. Paco was a big-time, well-respected Muay Thai fighter. When he and Dux start trading kicks, that's sometimes what Muay Thai fighters do -- just go at it until one falters.

Dolph Lundgrean and Brandon Lee (RIP!) movie called Showdown in Little Tokyo is probably Dolph's coolest action film. Brandon may not have ever been as big as his father but he was so charismatic, he would still be making films to this day, RIP to a young legend. If you haven't seen The Crow, it is a damned good movie still with a fantastic soundtrack.

Bloodsport is legit classic silly badassery, but for me growing up Kickboxer was playing nonstop whenever it hit hbo and instantly recorded. was just jamming out to Streets of Siam. JCVD and Stan Bush rule : D

This whole story is a fabrication of the real Frank Dux's mind. That being said, it's still a very entertaining movie and my favorite of JCVD's followed by Lionheart and Kickboxer.
