This first film in the four-part series is an Emmy award winning documentary exposing the declining health of the 6th largest lake in the United States, and the future of watershed communities of Vermont, New York, and Quebec. The worsening blue-green algae blooms of Lake Champlain are the most visible symptom of a lake in decline, and the end point of a failing dairy industry, ill-planned development, and aging wastewater treatment systems. Created by Emmy award winning producer Victor Guadagno and narrated by Academy Award winning actor Chris Cooper, Bloom first premiered on Mountain Lake PBS in December 2010, with follow-up episodes premiering in February 2012. It tells the story from the front lines of lake management, policy, and environmental advocacy -- fighting the status quo, awaking an apathetic public, and envisioning a new future for the ecological treasure and economic engine of the historic Champlain Valley. And 11 years later blooms still happen regularly. Volunteer organizations can only do so much when government fails to do anything of real consequence.

Really fantastic video. I've been coming to Vermont for years and noticed that the blooms are getting worse.

Dairy farming is a problem in other areas too. In Strasburg, PA the surrounding Amish dairy farms have had a negative impact on the tourism industry in Langcaster County. Bovine manure and urine leaching into ground water forced the closure of a motel based on old railroad cabooses.

I fish in Lake Champlain all the time. I hate to think of all the ways it's being polluted. While I love the notion of local dairy, if it cannot be done in a way that minimizes phosporus runoff, while maintaining fair prices for farmers, maybe it's something best suited for farms in the midwest. I am sure though, there's a path to keep dairy here, but get farmers a fair price so they can afford to comply with environmental laws that could keep the lake clean. Oh, the problems of a land-locked state.

Some just do not care. A small college in Pennsylvania, named California University of Pennsylvania, drains its recently constructed asphalt parking lots at its football stadium and student housing complexes into detention ponds, which then flow during every rain event to the nearest stream, which then travels to a warm-water fishery less than two miles away, and then to the Monongahela River, carrying a variety of contaminants, including petroleum hydrocarbons and particulates.

I'm not buying a cabin there after seeing this......2021. I don't drink milk anyway here in Maryland, our Bay was destroyed by run off decades and decades ago -

It has taken how long to get the TMDL's for impaired streams throughout the MS4 communities???? What happens when we get it? The Conservation Law Foundation appeals the permit and it ends up back into the broken system. A never-ending cycle. Guess who ends up paying the attorney fees for both sides in the legal back and forth??? We the VT tax payer. Let the Environmental Scientists and the Engineers take care of the storm water and keep the lawyers and politicians out of it.

When the lake collapses, so will the economy. Real Estate, tourism, boating, and yes even the farms, will suffer. The clock is ticking. There is enough evidence to press the panic button. Just get on with the conservation efforts before time runs out. There are 13 times as many livestock as their are people. All of the human waste is treated. None of the animal waste is treated.

Well, that cat is out of the bag. Our gov has betrayed us. They know what the problem is but still drag their feet and let this continue. The guy at the end is right, this is theft on a grand scale. It's been stolen by greed. Too bad, I used to enjoy fishing and duck hunting on this once great lake, but no more. SHAME.

Absolute hogwash! There should be a disclaimer on this feature stating opinion based on one side only! Farmers are willing to pollute at the behest of govt subsidies? Anyone with common sense would understand that the farmers are not "polluting" on purpose! They're doing what they have been taught to do for generations! How about everyone that is concerned reach into your pocket and "give" the farmers money to solve this issue! Instead of lounging on your lakefront property, see if there is anything you can do to help the farmer make ends meet! If you think we don't need farms anymore because it's "an outdated narrative", find another place occupy! Farmers break their rumps and don't often get the outlet to express their opinions because they are often looked at as uneducated and uncivilized people who are not in touch with the real world! Polarizing a defenseless cause is sad and surely there needs to some personal inflection dealt with!

Farmers work tirelessly to provide food for citizens of their communities and the world- and the only appropriate response is respect! Farmers are doing the best they can given the resources that they have, the knowledge that has been passed down to them, and the current economic infrastructure (i.e. govt incentives for food production). I don't think anyone's intention is to place blame on farmers. However, it is undeniable that there are some agricultural techniques that are more sustainable (and even regenerative!) than others- i.e. management intensive grazing on pasture, design of polycultures to help generate and cycle fertility on site. We need to reshape our economic infrastructure to provide farmers the knowledge and tools of regenerative agriculture. We need to empower farmers to become the heroes of food production AND a sustainable future!

Guyinpajamapants ,, Who did Vermonters send to Washington DC to take care of this ,Now really old situation ? Patrick Leahy .. And where since 1975 did all that money go..? However you can't protect Vermont from these people by doing nothing . I'm very disappointed in my fellow country men to let these thieving Politicians And Realtors do that to them!
