Our quest to take The What’s Underneath Project global continues with our new series of global style warriors. Shot in Paris and Berlin. First, we have Lauren Bastide. Blonde and stereotypically pretty, Lauren was constantly told she should be a model growing up: “society’s ultimate power position for a woman.”
Instead, she became a journalist and landed her dream job at Elle magazine. Over the decade she spent there, Lauren witnessed the industry she once idolized morph beyond recognition: advertising’s perverse influence over journalism was staggering. The final straw was when a furry Fendi keychain advertorial took editorial precedence over her feature on a case of police brutality.
“At some point you have to listen to your guts, I guess, and my guts told me to get out of there,” said Lauren. The vintage-layered mother of two walked out and never looked back. This, and lots more radical realness, like dispelling the myth that pregnancy and motherhood is always a bohemian dream, in Lauren’s episode.
Today you can find Lauren doing it her way on “La Poudre,” an unfiltered, empowering podcast for women. bit.ly/2m2n4k4

"I had a sister and she died and I'm not comfortable with the years she was alive." Like fuck, this is another level of brutal honesty. So brave. Such truth. This woman is incredible.

Skims24 can you explain this to me I’m kind of confused? Does she mean like she is okay that she is dead now because when she was alive she didn’t like her? Or is she sad that her sister is gone?
@TheOwlBooks
@TheOwlBooks 6 лет назад
From what i understand is that it seems like her sister was going through a hard time during the years she was a alive and maybe they didnt have the opportunity to resolve those issues together?

I think she means that she just can't think of when her sister was alive, she misses her too much. The memories of her being here are too difficult to remember and deal with with because she's still grieving. Such a brave and beautiful woman. I hope she manages to face those memories one day.

on a real note: wow to her vulnerability and honesty, so moving, I felt swept up in this. on a materialistic note: it's so beautiful how intricately these women style themselves - it's such a reflection on how everyone's personalities vary

Every time I watch a StyleLikeU video, something is being said that I've been feeling or thinking for so long but never been able to properly articulate. And then it hits me like a hammer. But in a positive way. First it's sad but then it blooms into an incredible comfortableness with this "state of womanhood" which connects women. I'm very grateful these helpful experiences are what social media can be used for as well. Thank you!
