It was cleaning up really well when the nitrous turned on, that was 1500 microseconds of injector pulsewidth, so still 30% to 40% more available depending on RPM and how much heat the pistons can take from a longer injection pulse and more timing.

@@pddofficial definitely sounds like with some more tuning and time on the dyno with the right gate set up and control 2k hp is coming for sure. Keep up the hard work and inspiring the rest of us wire fire believers. Very interesting note about the different challenges with the 6.great versus a 5.9 in controlling turbo speed especially at that elevation. I can imagine how challenging that is at that elevation. Perfect set up conditions to compete at DPC.

When the whole combination is at the limit for rod strength, block strength, and cast piston strength, adding a spool jet at 1500 and turning on the big kit at 2200 RPM is a SURE FIRE way to make a nice torque spike, split the block, bend the rods, and break the pistons.... However, if it was a solid block with HD billet rods and forged race pistons that could handle 3000+ lb ft of torque, then it sounds like a great recipe to make a big torque number on the dyno!!!

Power Driven Diesel I think you misunderstood my strategy. I meant just enough at 1500 to start getting that big turbo woke up and going then start progressively feeding in more at 2200 and hopefully all in by 3500. I actually have no experience with nitrous on a diesel though so you are likely still correct. Lol I always had more fun beating Dennis Perry’s nitrous trucks with my fuel only ones. From what I have seen tuning for lots of nitrous is difficult, it can really hit hard. Worried about hard parts why not just rpm it some more to make power? Common rails still not happy making power at 5k like a p-pump?

The FI 488 had a T6 divided 1.15 housing on it and 40 psi to the hat plus 30 psi springs in the 45mm wastegate. The Aggressor 488 had a T6 divided 1.32 housing on it and just the 30 psi springs in the same 45mm wategate. The FI-built/assembled Garrett 85mm 5018r had the 0.96 open/single volute T6 housing on it and just the 30 psi springs in the 45mm gate.

I take it you've never seen a bullet spinning in the ice of a lake. When you get the angle correct (it's steeper than you'll think), it does repeat fairly frequently. Mythbusters were able to re-create it.

This head was a fleece head. We are working on our own higher flowing head for the next engine.

Josh's truck came equipped with a 2005 5.9 Common Rail and he has since swapped to a Common Rail 6.7L Platform.

This truck run's Power Driven's 15W-40 Full Synthetic engine oil. It's a spiced up CI4+ oil with the correct additive package for extended street use but loaded with ZDDP like a race oil to keep the flat tappet cam and wear parts happy. Not to toot our own horn, but it's honestly one of the very best street diesel engine oils on the market.

The GT5018r failed very quickly, like 4 or 5 dyno pulls between 1100 HP and 1600 HP. The compressor wheel didn't explode from over speeding like the FI488 that was not gated properly, the shaft broke at the base/root of the threads where they always fail on that charger. If you consult with any big name Garrett distributor, they will tell you that the GTX and GTR 50's have a known weak spot on the shaft at the threads and to not push them hard in a race application. The GTX5018r that blew up on the GodFather had a 1.39 AR housing on it and no nitrous. That shaft failure looked nearly identical to the shaft failure on Josh's truck in this video. Straight up, the Borg S400 have a stronger/more robust shaft period. What's crazy is Garrett used the super strong GT55 ball bearing setup on the GT50 (so the hotside is built like a tank and only has to deal with the abuse of the smaller GT50 turbine wheel) but undercut the shaft at the base of the compressor wheel threads which didn't leave enough material to handle the torque requirements to drive the compressor wheel.

@@pddofficial this is really good info here thanks for the detailed response. I wasn't aware of the undercut shaft. I'm still curious as to what the turbine speed was compared to the s400, but I guess we'll never know. I feel like they were both probably spinning pretty far out of their designed rpm. When you guys broke the gt50 on Todd's truck it was the old secondary in his triple setup right? That would be a lot of added torque on that portion of the shaft from all the pressure coming from the primary's. I'm a Garrett fan myself and I think a lot of guys would watch these videos and conclude that garrett is junk when that's not the case at all. You guys are just finding the limits of everything over there lol. We can learn a lot from this video. Data is key 👌 Thanks for the content as usual guys keep killing it out there.

When running a hood stack (read: short exhaust run) it's common to have a little flame out of the stack during spoolup, especially with Common Rail tuning that can retard the timing down low to cause more burn/heat in the exhaust to get the charger spooled. Later in the run when you see flame, that's common when making big power at higher RPM with nitrous. More injection timing will shorten the flame by causing more of the combustion to complete inside the engine which does make more power, but just a degree too much advance on the timing can also overheat pistons, bend rods, break blocks, and blow head gaskets. So most tuners play it safe with regard to timing when spraying a lot of nitrous. The result of too little timing at that power level is a flame twice as tall and with enough heat, will consume the turbine wheel, melt the turbo exhaust housing, burn exhaust gaskets, etc.

It's a safety requirement usually for racing or sled pulling that requires (2) grade 8 bolts put into a cross pattern in the exhaust to "catch" the turbine wheel if the turbo explodes.
