Whether I'm fishing in the Northeast or Florida, I'm still amazed by how NOAA can get marine forecasts so wrong so often. This was one of those days, but the unexpected wind moved water and put fish on the feed! Online Fishing Course Discounts - www.saltstrong...

15 reds WOW! What's a typical Spring day look like? I'm happy if I get 2. Always get snook and trout but struggle to get reds on consistent basis in bull and turtle bay on artificial.

@LongIslandLethals 6 месяцев назад
I've seen a remora on a bigger red once further north of you. This week there has been lot's of smaller black tips seen floating, apparently they are feeding on the spiraling fish. Some one did some major damage to the eco system down there. I hope it comes to light and regulations change what caused it.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 месяцев назад
I haven't seen any spiraling fish or any other issues other than the dirtier water coming out of the caloosahatchie because of the draw down on Okeechobee. The better trout disappeared soon after the lousy water filtered in.

NOAA gets the marine winds wrong a lot. There's lots of times they're predicting an 8-12 mph southwest wind during the summer, but the winds are blowing 15 mph often with occasional 22 mph gusts. Some of those smaller reds you were hooked into beside the boat resembled the crazy shaking and rolling of 12"+ trout I'm accustomed to catching from March to May in smaller rivers and large ponds/small lakes. I don't know if you're back in LI right now, but the crazy April-like weather we were having in February and March has the stripers running early this year. They're not as sluggish as they normally would be too.

Ive been getting so antsy. I took my jon boat on the Schuylkill on Easter looking for a muskie and struck out on those but i did manage a handful of nice small mouth and 2 walleye. We've been hammered with rain lately up here and it's been horrible on fresh water. I'm hoping to have the boat back from the mechanic end of this week and wanna try for some stripers behind AC. Good stuff as always

The mangroves are looking pretty gnarly; I hope there are plans to re-plant as they are vital to the ecosystem.

when retrieving the z man paddle tails are you bouncing them off the bottom?

Yes.

Nice job as usual. Why do you prefer the weedless style weighted hook as opposed to the standard paddle tail jig heads?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 месяцев назад
#1) I like the position of the weight, as opposed to having it all in the head. It makes for more natural swimming action. #2) I find they hold fish better than a jig head, which is thrown easier when a snook jumps. #3) They come out of the mangroves easier when I over cast.

Or should I just get old town 120 with spot lock
@JohnSkinnerFishing

The Autopilot 120 is the better choice for up North IMO. I prefer the ePDL when I'm fishing shallow along the mangroves.

Hey John, Quick question. I’m looking for an all purpose rod for this season. Will fish from boat around western long island sound in the summer for Porgy and blackfish primarily. Occasional striped bass fishing with swim baits and bucktails during the spring time. Which one of your rods would you suggest?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 6 месяцев назад
I'd choose this rod. It's the one I use for blackfish and will handle nice stripers no problem. bit.ly/3oWVAPu.

Finally on the better reds. I just wasn't finding them during the winter. 1-3 nice ones every trip now, and on the trip I just got back from the half-dozen smaller ones were low-slot.
