Great update man! Top quality stuff, gotta love how many great editions we're getting in this era of home video. The Keaton set is indeed amazing, so happy they released it. I've got Day of the Outlaw coming in from the sale, LOVE the alternate artwork, didn't know what it looked like can see myself switching it around too. The blue blotches you got on that set seem similar to blotches I get on the MoC Island of Lost Souls steelbook, I've bought it twice but can't find a clean copy, sucks. I do love the Arrow box sets but they're SO expensive. That being said, I'm sticking with the Human Condition, one of the best films of all time, so glad it's getting an English friendly release, the screens look phenomenal too. Really wish there were features like you say, and I'll be gutted if Criterion end up doing it, but better. Time will tell! Also have a pre-order for the Murnau set, looking forward to that more than the Keaton set, as I haven't seen any of the films, and have been waiting for a blu-ray of The Last Laugh for ages.
Thanks man! We're really spoilt for choice as far as so many editions of great films keep getting released! The alternate artwork for DotO is far better than the original in my opinion. Wish they'd put out more with reversible sleeves. The blue thing is an issue but Arrow didn't want anything to do with it, as I purchased of Amazon. I've seen 3 copies and they are all equally damaged. With Arrows box sets I always take the gamble, they have paid off so far! I've not seen Human Condition so the price point is very sketchy, if Criterion do it better, it will probably keep it's retail price as all the other Arrow box sets have so far! The Murnau will be an exploration for me too I'm sure MoC will do a great job!
Oh wow! I'm going to have to check it out at some point! Knowing me I'll end up forgetting to cancel the pre-order :D The only thing which is off putting is the price point...
The extras are very weak for a film/s this great, it's unfortunate. Not crazy about the artwork either. I may end up cancelling as it's not limited, but it's must own eventually.
I'm not a huge fan of the artwork either, it will look nice next to the other Arrow sets though. According to the Arrow website it is limited, but doesn't state how many. I can't imagine it selling out instantly though, might be worth waiting for one of the sales they have, or using some Arrow points to discount it. Mind you I payed a similar amount for the Yoshida: Love + Anarchism collection, and I was very pleased with that. I'll just have to see closer to the time whether the purchase is viable.
TBH I hated Altman's The Long Goodbye. I know a lot of people rate the movie and Brackett wrote the screenplay (as he did for the somewhat incoherent but atmospheric The Big Sleep) but t thought it dumped on Chandler's novel from a great height.
Some high quality editions here. Retaliation was a brilliant discovery, I hope Arrow bring us many more Yakuza films of the 60s and 70s. Sweet Smell of Success is utterly brilliant - Lancaster on sensational form and unlikely anything else I've seen him in. Shame you didn't like Long Goodbye, I'm a big fan. That Taviani box looks lovely. Day of the Outlaw is a terrific western, with great performances from Robert Ryan and the wonderful Burl Ives. The Naked Prey is indeed a hidden classic (in my view at least) - a savage, intense film. I'd recommend BFI's release of Watkins BBC films - I haven't seen Munch myself, but I am intrigued. I will definitely pick up the Keaton set at some point, really looking forward to it. Looks a top quality release too. I'm planning on getting The Human Condition in the December Arrow sale - if it hangs around that long! Great stuff Sam. Take care.
Thanks for the feedback! I'm planning on revisiting The Long Goodbye, now I know the style of the film. It was my first Altman, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I've recently watched The Naked Prey and enjoyed it! Some very interesting use of the tribal music with the opening chase. Unfortunately there are a few moments where the camera technique is awful, which took me out of the film (the night time scenes which are obviously shot in the day). I am very interested in the Watkins releases, I found Punishment Park incredible! I recently received my copy of The Human Condition but I've not gotten around to seeing it yet. The box set itself looks great, but I'm looking forward to exploring it when I have the time! Again thanks for the support!
You present your videos well. I always enjoy your uploads. I loved day of the outlaw it's so obvious Tarantino gets his inspiration from this film and dragon inn which both have references from his hateful eight. Have you seen paper moon ? I watched m.o.c release and was immediately inspired to check out the rest of Peter bogdanovich's work. What's up doc ? Is a brilliant film
Thank you! I've been meaning to pick up Dragon Inn, but the price hasn't dropped significantly enough yet. A Touch of Zen was utterly amazing, so I'm looking forward to it! I'll also keep a look out for Paper Moon, I tend to pick up the MoC titles when they are a little cheaper, when I saw the trailer a while ago I was intrigued. I'll add What's Up Doc to my watch list!
