For those wondering about a cable arresting system at an airport: I'm a former USAF firefighter... These systems are common at joint use airports, most commonly Air National Guard bases. The arresting cables are anchored in bunkers on both sides of both ends of the runway, where there are braking systems to slow down the aircraft when it engages the cable. The cable is normally sunk into a groove that goes across the runway, and is raised out of the groove by hydraulics that are controlled by the tower. This keeps aircraft and vehicles from getting caught up in the cables when they are not needed. The arresting system at an airport does not stop the aircraft as quickly or abruptly as on an aircraft carrier, but is designed to stop the aircraft in a slower and more controlled manner. In my years at an F-16 base, I can count on one hand how many times we had to use the system, and have fingers left over. The cables were raised more often just to make sure they worked, then to actually stop an aircraft.

@@johnschroeder3072 I am curious how you managed to know how you determined how many fingers he has? He could very well have 4 fingers and his point would still work. So... next time you want to brag about your "knowledge" that the thumb might not be considered as a finger (which is very debatable by the way!), You should get some basic knowledge of conversing and reading and thinking of your own. Besides your comment seems only to exist just to tempt people to ask you why ordinary people should only have 4 fingers and not 5 which is the common knowledge. So that you then can, argue that the thumb is not considered a finger. Just to start an argument... Please stop doing that because that is just annoying for anyone involved and that's how the toxic arguments on RU-vid start often times. And just to take the wind out of your sail of bragging even further, most medical books DO consider the thumb a finger according to an article from MedicalNewsToday. So for any normal human being it is perfectly fine to consider the thumb a finger and count it as such. Our whole counting system is based on that idea otherwise we would have an octal-Nummerical system and not a deciamal one.

Just to point out that it was the other end's arresting cable that she would have caught - essentially she landed it like it was a carrier landing. Probably the hyde (hydraulic) failure led to a potential failure in the nosewheel steering - hence being unable to clear the runway and also not wanting to run down the runway as shown on the video. Extremely clear communication and flying by the pilot - well done :-)!)

@@spooky3669 land based arrest systems are normally deoyed on the departure side of the runway to prevent an overshoot if the distressed jet lands deep, or has to abort the takeoff and can't stop in time. Angel askes for the approach side cable (carrier style), and tower advised that the cabke would be on the runway threshold, so she would have had to land really accurate, likely without speedbrakes or flaps (not sure exactly what syatems were out). You can hear her ask for the approach side to be deployed iso normal MO of departure side. Its a tricky landing in a jet with 1hr of fuel onboard and likely other syatems out aswell, but guarantees she could stop in time while also providing the option to bolter if she missed the hook... Does that explain the hard and tricky?

Navy F18 landing gear is different from most others, they are pretty sturdy and are designed to land basically without flaring the airplane, hard and tricky is by no means excessively difficult, just don’t flare, on a fixed runway this isn’t hard at all, landing on a constantly oscillating runway (aircraft carrier) this is something very different and challenging. As a lesson to other pilots, try to speak in clear language to ATC. They often are not informed on aircraft systems, so her description of a "hyd problem" was not understood by ATC and demanded more questions to understand her problem. A minor issue, to be sure, but a better way she could have conveyed this would have been "we have a hydraulic system problem which requires us to run some checklists to extend our gear manually and we'll need to fly an arrested landing". Overall, great job. And this isn't unique. A LOT of times, I've heard pilots state the nature of an emergency in pilot-specific cryptic language, which then has ATC interrupting them with a series of questions, when they could have simply stated in plain language what the impact was of the problem and what they needed all in one shot.
@mrsock3380
@mrsock3380 2 года назад
I don't think it mattered in this case, telling a controller you have a hydraulic problem on its own is useless information, not being able to steer being the main reason for needing the arrestor cable is the main bit of info the ATC needs. If they had said they won't be able to steer without mentioning the hydraulic problem, it would lead to the ATC asking why because depending on what caused the lack of steering might warrant a different emergency response. I'm not ATC but have some experience with emergency response so think the ATC would have a list of information to get, not every piece of information is relevant for all emergencies but you get that information every time

Most ATC facilities Xmit/Rcv on UHF and VHF. Simultaneous radio. Most older military aircraft only had UHF while civilian aircraft generally only have VHF radios. Many newer military aircraft now have both radios. When operating around a civilian airfield it's better to use VHF frequencies to be able to hear the local traffic.

There are actually quite a few more than you'd think, owing to air national guard bases all over the place that are frequently colocated at a civilian airport. You can see where the arresting gear is on the airport diagrams; it's depicted as a litle line with two opposing arrows coming out of it, and a note "BAK-14/12" which is the type of gear it is. They usually have those for emergencies like this, 'cause if a high-performance jet has, say, a brake problem it's going off the far end of the runway otherwise.

There are multiple reasons for radio quality. Not to mention how many more reasons are added when trying to get a recording on a video. Most channels like this use websites that automatically record frequencies, and quality is mostly an issue with how well that recording equipment picks up that frequency, or how far it is away from the aircraft/airport transmitting.

normally ATC frequencies are about 118-136MHz in the VHF band. Military aircraft in the united states usually have UHF radios, that operate at higher frequencies, so most ATC facilities in the united states are set up to talk to them on those frequencies if needed. That's why the controller was giving two frequencies; he's talking on both of them at the same time and can receive on either, so if the aircraft wasn't equipped with a standard civilian VHF radio he can still hear the pilot.
