Blue Angels C-130 "Fat Albert" CRAZY Landing at Air Show (Melbourne 2015)

Fat Albert and crew make me PROUD! My late father was Career USAF and seeing these great videos make me have tears of pride and happiness for all of our military whether they are Marines, USAF, Army, Navy or Coast Guard! They bring back wonderful memories of when I was a dependent and lived on base. Thank you for the videos and thank you to ALL members of the United States Military Branches past and present for their service!

Some have already said, but it bears repeating: This is not a hard or improper landing. The pilot is showing off the ability of the C-130 to stop very fast on short, unimproved runways. They do 2 things to achieve that: 1. Apply reverse pitch to the blades on the turbo-prop engines which switches all the "thrust" forward, like when a passenger jet uses "thrust reversers" to slow down on the runway. 2. Apply brakes very hard. This lurches all the weight of the Hercules forward and puts most of it on the front tire. It's very similar to a "reverse wheelie" performed by talented street bikers. Those two actions together create quite a show as the plane comes to a stop very rapidly. That landing was exactly what the pilot planned to do, and was performed by the book.

I was standing at the gate not far from where you where, that landing scared the crap outta me haha. Great video!

Herc never disappoints

even in a combat/assault approach, I don't think its supposed to land nose wheel first and tilt onto just two sets of gear.

GOD DAMN!!!!!! That was a faster brake than default FSX brakes! Oh and that is an average 12 year old landing on FSX in a Nutshell Landing

That kind of landing is calld "sarajevo landing" and they do it from high alt and dive straight for the strip for a fast landing whit less possebility of taking hits in a combat zone. they come in fast and hard and slams on the airbrakes and wheel braks to stop fast (sorry for bad english!)

I used to fly the Buffalo (DH-5), a STOL aircraft (Short Take Off & Landing) ... We would call that landing a "wheelbarrow", nose wheel down, mains still in the air; basically just an under / late landing flare. Still nice to watch. Thanks for the post. Sub.

That was am "Assault Landing" and it is a military landing with high speed and steep angle of attack on final approach. There are lot's of those on youtube. The C130 is known for this landing but you should see the C117 do it....amazing

I saw them blow a tire at the Capitol Airshow in Sacramento a few years back. Will need to dig up that video...

One HOT landing!

I was an AF E.E. medic at Tan Son Nhut Air Base outside of Saigon. All the aircraft did this kind of landing to lessen taking hits from Viet Cong outside the perimeter. They also didn't turn on their landing lights until the last minute at night time, and the field turned off the runway lights until they got closer. One night we had an emergency call from the tower, asking us to cross the taxiway and hold short of the active runway. A C-130 had no indication its main landing gear was down and locked. The tower advised us that they would do a slow pass over the runway and asked us to see if the gear was down. I didn't feel too comfortable about that. After the first pass, it was so dark it was hard to confirm. I asked if the crew would mind if I spotted our ambulance search light on the under side of the aircraft and got permission. Next pass, it looked like the gear was down and I asked for another pass to make sure. They complied and my and my aidman both saw the right and left gear down and reported that. Whether they were locked was up to the crew. Fortunately they performed a normal landing without incident. (we covered many in-flight emergencies during the year ('68-69) that I was there.)

This manouver is called "Sarajevo-landing" in the German airforce, during the KFOR mission this had been a standard landing on the Airport of Sarajevo for the Hercules, because almost every plane got under fire while approaching.

That fucking music would drive me nuts, I go to see and hear aircraft, if I wanted to stand around listening to music i could just stay at work.....

Hmmmm... little bit rougher version of a Sarajewo Approach than usual, seems Cptn. Higgins had to fight some tail - and crosswind at this one and so the contact was not completely as planned but she covert the issues very professional. For the "casual viewer" it looks pretty spectacular of course

All i could think of is in the pilot head he would have been like ' Come on lets get this puppy down'

Well that's what it is designed to do. Short landing approach ( to avoid small arms fire). Prop thrust reversing (to stop on short unimproved runways). Then he backed it up. Nothing to fancy unless you didn't know it could do that.

It's not the air show staffs choice. It's the blue angels performance and music selection.

How much damage?

Pilot was fighting that landing from the time he pointed the nose down and committed to the runway. Looked like he had a nasty crosswind and both sets of wheels were off the ground at different points after he touched down. That's why they're blue angel pilots.
