@janlen12c "Actually the man who wrote the basis for the song[Walter Scott" Scott wrote a version of the song but it is based on an older song called General Leslie's March To Longmarston Moor which was first printed in Ramsey's "Tea Table Miscellany" but possibly dates to the Civil War period itself. It is a Covenanting song concerning the invasion of England during the Scottish govt's struggle against Charles I..Scott's song changes it to events of the 1500s
