Saw them on the field in Sacramento. Layered solo section near the end sounded clean, sitting 7th row on the 50. Definitely a risky monent. Im not sure there is a better bass or quad line this year. 🔥
This writing style just isn’t for me, feels like everything is at mezzo forte or more, everything thing feels like a snare bass or tenor feature, it felt like there’s very little dynamic full ensemble playing, more like displaying chops and skills for the sake of chops and skills. Not that they’re not an excellent group, just feels like not as mature of a full ensemble sound. Love the reaction vids!
I've never been able to put into words why I'm not a fan of BD drumlines but I think this is the best way to put it, chops for the sake of chops. Well said!
I think Evan said it best at 9:08 He said “This book has a lot of licks”, but what he didn’t say is “This book has a lot of groove”. That’s not to say the book has no groove at all, but to point out there are licks all over is indicative of what you were saying. Everything feels like a feature of sorts, but no “supporting” beats that may sit under hornline or pit moments. Of course, this video doesn’t give us the context of the hornline or pit, so it’s hard to listen to only the battery and say “something is missing”. Without context, it sounds like a bunch of features and licks.
BD’s drum score sounds like if I gave three 12 year olds a drumset, a pack of monsters, and told them to go crazy. Then I transcribe each kid to a section.
It’s part of their Drill I think. They split up in the opening section and turn away. I thought same thing earlier when I was watching them during rehearsal.
I'm surprised you guys watched such an old vid, there are newer ones that sound much better. Unfortunately in different pieces not one nice vid, but they sound much better.
Yea, they definitely have already gotten cleaner since this but this still highlights the whole package really well and allowed us to talk about arrangement and variety. Still too early for us to want to talk too much about clarity anyway at this point in the season.
Completely unrelated to BD. I'm wearing my Aged Out Podcast swag at a local Wings joint in the middle of Indiana. My server turns out to be a recent aged out bass player from Rhythm X/Crusaders/Phantom/Heat Wave. He saw my shirt and then we geeked out for a bit.
I think if I was a much better percussionist I would like this book better. I just assume there’s something I’m missing, like freshmen English majors who don’t (yet) like reading James Joyce.
one thing I learned going through music school during drum corps, is not to be so focusing on something like what meter rolls they're are playing without having the music in front of you. A lot of the odd numbered roll patterns are hard to hear, but with the music they aren't that much harder than a triplet or duplet roll.
@@FOSSIL13drums Not yet! I ordered the Alpha with custom graphics. So, it will probably take a couple weeks to get. But, I'll def post something when it arrives. 😉🤙
Guys, I'm re-watching this video after watching pretty much all the other breakdowns you've done up until this point. This book is so wildly more difficult than anyone else's I think that deserves remarkable consideration. I'll spare my comments on all the nastiness I've seen on social media commentary about BD this year, but I feel like they're graded on a BD curve which automatically takes them down a grade and a half which simply is not fair.
Also do you have a discord? It would be cool to have like a community reaction. Like at the beginning of a season we all hold off on watching lot vids to join in the discord and react together even if only you two talk while screen sharing and we all type in chat as it’s happening.
Evan and Michael your thoughts on BD’s book this year with Scojo and Rudy going for a Sanford? Second can they get the book: PISS CLEAN before Finals? Thanks!
It would be awesome to hear them towards championship weekend, but compared to what SCV, Boston, or even what Phantom is doing... I can't at this time see them in the running for the Sanford. I love BD's book this year. Even based on what you said, they have the ingredients. They just got to cook something up!
They're (BD) definitely in the conversation for drums. SCV's book is a lot easier than usual and is pretty much at its peak already. Great line, but just not as much demand. Phantom sounds great this year, and Penland is doing a great job with the book, but definitely not as much experienced membership. Boston is absolutely in the running though; they might have finally hit the sweet spot of difficulty/clarity. BD has the most technical book by far though, and if it continues to clean up then they are absolutely in the convo for drums. Would be cool to see them win the Sanford again! Would be dope for Boston too.
I don't think they're gonna beat Vanguard. This book is just so in your face the entire time. Like legit, my ears need a rest. 🤦🏾♂️😭 Did they ever go to the edge???
You've been vindicated! By the end SCV was extremely consistent. I would have been fine with SCV or Boston tbh - Happy to see SCV's quality playing was rewarded.
