Blue Devils is one of my favorite drum corps, especially since I first heard the hornline when I was 19... one of my neighbors in the UW Stevens Point dorms had a CD and he let me borrow it. I was a member of Chops Inc. Drum & Bugle Corps (lead baritone) from 2004-2010 & 2014-2018.
Thank you so much for giving us this gift! This is mine and my husband’s favorite show. He passed away in February. This is one of the only things I can still listen to and smile. ❤️
Man, the video simply does not do justice to being there live. The sound was as loud as any drum corps song you've ever heard, and that wedge focused that sound like a laser to the crowd. This video captured a moment in drum corps history.
One of the greatest closers of all time! I marched baritone in the mid/late 90’s, and that mellophone run was ubiquitous! Every mello player I ever knew had it down. Those were good times… Well done BD!
@@PatrickMcNealMakesThings not that you'll see this and its a year late, but the only reason you don't find any of today's shows entertaining is because you choose not to find the entertaining. You go into the shows with a closed mind set and say this isn't as good as any of the old school shows, and don't get me wrong I love whatever you consider "old school", there are so many fantastic shows with so many fantastic moments and I can also say the same for shows now a days as well, these corps put so much time and effort into everything they do all summer long to put on the best performances for the audience. The way drum corps has evolved as a whole is fun to see when you go back and watch old shows compared to shows now, and you can tell there is a difference but difference isn't bad, because the only thing that has changed is what is performed. The same work ethic and attitude and overall drive has stayed the same for so long in this activity we all love and that's why people can still love shows throughout time.
@@alexladrew6316I respect your opinion, and I know damn well those kids are working their tails off. But you shouldn't have to work to be entertained; you shouldn't have to find it. It's there, or it isn't. For me, it's not.
Not gonna happen. They don't play latin jazz like they used to and due to key changes in the instruments (now concert b-flat instruments versus then G bugle performance instruments) and safety measures it'll never reach that way again.
@@lamestudiosinc418 this is a simply iconic performance, but you have to be somewhat crazy to believe that on a technical level this was a better performance than Crown 2013
I agree with yotz. The old G bugles, cant beat their sound. This song gave me goose bumps, it was my first year of corp, Ill never forget it. Thanks for posting!
In the 30 years since this moment, so much has changed for dci, and yet this still reigns as one of the golden standards, both for what a marching band should be and in my heart
DCI, are you watching and listening to the crowd reaction? Bring back the excitement to go with the modern execution and you will REALLY have something!
For the music majors out there : this was played on G bugles in 1992. Go listen to the Blue Devils playing this on youtube here a few years ago on Bd Trumpets. Use your own unbiased musical ears and ask yourself if this song sounds better on the G bugles or on the B's. Unless you have been brainwashed, quite apart from the superior musicianship talent in the later Blue Devils, this sound on the G's is much better ( with a smaller hornline ) back in '92 too.
IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH ONE IS BETTER. They brought back a classic as an ENCORE. Not as an entire show. I love em both and it is freaking awesome that they brought it back in 2009.
@Bill Huffinpuff, I think we both know that is a ridiculous comparison. To even imply that we should compare one of the great hornlines of the past who spent 9 months working on this music to perfect vs a great hornline from another time who sightread it and played through it a small handful of times just as a warm up/crowd hype song to justify your opinion as the "right" opinion is laughably dishonest. Thats like comparing the the 85 chicago bears super bowl team to some of the current NFL players playing a game of 5 on 5 flag football out in the yard to "prove" the footballs and helmets were superior back in the day. Why not just like what you like, let others like what they like, and not worry about "Brainwashing" people in a different direction?
If they had a cleaner visual program and percussion, they could have easily contended for the top 3 that year. It's a shame we don't have the Blue Devils from the 1990s. This show in particular would peel a few layers of skin from your face.
Did anyone else think in first couple minutes of that movement with the set that were 3 diamonds and the left diamond went into a spiral it was cool that they were like sprinting and the middle diamond were kind of lazily strolling across the field? Lazily is a bad word i know also
All are FANTASTIC shows, but you seriously need to watch a hell of a lot more drum corps. There's so many great shows. (How do you have the Madison Scouts and there not be their 1988 show? :P)
He's missing some big ones. Cadets "Appalachian Spring" (1987), Blue Devils 1980, Santa Clara Vanguard 1980 (who wouldn't put THAT show on their list??), BD "Through A Glass, Darkly" (2010) Every Carolina Crown show from 2007-current. These are essential shows every drum corps fan should know by heart.
Back when BD sole goal was not to just win every year. It was to showcase how much brass talent they had and let the kids rip it. BD attitude now is if they don't win the season was not a success.

what the hell do judges even say to something like this? if i could go back in time and just see one dci show it would be this, and i would probably cry lmfao.
hitting_things_with _broken_trees Cavaliers, CBC and Star are why this show didn't win. This show had one of the greatest closers ever, but the show as a whole didn't hold a candle to what the top three achieved that year.
