Just so you know, the city chair makes 165k annually. The chief makes 85k. What's the problem here? I'm editing this to clarify. They will cut officers' pay but not their own. 85 is fair but 165 for a part-time gig is disgusting.

Politicians never cut their benefits or salaries, only the people who work for them. And the amazing part about this whole thing, politicians are part- time employees with full benefits!

People need to realize how hard it is to get seasoned police, fire, paramedic, and other people in such small towns. Most people want to live in larger areas, have services, etc. Younger people often want to have families -- so they need to convince their wife to stay there and their kids to do the small-town life. So, when you get someone willing to stay... don't mess it up. When you have a police or other department with 5 to 10 people, losing one or two is devastating -- when you factor in shifts, holidays, injuries, sick days, etc. and still need two or three on duty at any time.
I had this exact conversation with my sheriff about 2 minutes ago! My county has 2 paid deputies and 4 reserves. Around 5,500 people and 775 square miles. 2 of the 7 towns in my county have local police departments. We purchased 2 used cruisers last year, but will be forced to let them go back because the County commissioners cannot seem to find the funding for them, as well as fuel! That’s right! Zero dollars are allocated for fuel! These same commissioners continue to lease new road graders, loaders, semi trucks and have more than enough workers to go around! It cost money to “Protect & Serve” but I promise it’s going to cost us a Hell of a lot more because they don’t have enough gas to catch a call! It’s pretty sad that county commissioners get to decide the budget for the sheriff department! Especially since most of them aren’t even smart enough to maintain a gravel road!
Awe, you can't get rich extorting people on the road now? What a fucking crying shame... What county did you say you worked for? I know a guy who needs an unwatched road way so he can make his deliveries on time.

I once met a county representative at a local function/festival. She was shaking hands, doing the whole thing. She approached me with a smile. Side note: I don’t do politics. She starts her spiel with me and I stop her. I say “if I came to a meeting, and asked for an accounting of my tax dollars, what could I expect?” She looked lost. I said “the taxes we pay to the county, and city. Where do they go? What do they get spent on?” She started to say it gets split up between various utilities and services. I stopped her and said “what if I, a taxpayer in your district, want a receipt for the money I’ve spent on the taxes in this county? I want to see where the government has decided to allocate my money, that I worked to earn. How much is spent on schools? Road maintenance? Police departments? Put in the pockets of the people we elected to spend that money on making our county better each day, and safer each day.” She was speechless. This is what should be happening. The taxpayer demanding an account of the taxes we pay. We have to account for what we spend when the IRS decides to audit us. It’s time to audit those WE put in place by electing them.

Try reading the budget. Per the 2022-2023 Budget: Revenue - $3.885M, Expenses $4.094M. City Council expense $27,403, down 4.52% from the previous year Police Dept expense $985,459, down 2.97% from the previous year. Not 20% as the video alleges. Keep in mind, Blue Mound is a very small town of approximately 2500 people, covering 324 acres. Not assigning blame, but it seems clear that City Council is not the reason the town is operating in the red. I know nothing about Blue Mound. However, budget cuts are not the same thing as "defunding". If a city lacks revenue, budgets must be cut. "Defunding" is political decision, not a budget decision.
it actually is a budget decision since for years people kept being told they there wasn't enough money for social and community services for things like mental health, people got tired of hearing it and wanted the money to come from somewhere. Defund isn't the best phrasing, reallocating excess police funds is more like it.
I don't live in Blue Mound but I live very close. It is an area on the rise. If they need to cut funding to the police force it's not because they don't have funds. It is because they misappropriated or mismanaged the funds they have.
@JackReacheround We've seen what's happened in Democrat run shit-holes like California, NYC, Chicago, Austin, etc, where police have been defunded and money "reallocated for social services." It's a disaster. Combine that with raving psychotic Democrat District Attorneys who refuse to prosecute criminals and violent crime is out of control. Police strength is down by 20-25 percent. Police are either retiring, quitting, or moving elsewhere. Governor DeSantis in Florida and South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem are actively recruiting police officers from these cities.
I live just north of Blue Mound. If a town that small is not figuring out how to make ends meet, sounds to me like they need to have a line-by-line review of the entire budget. As they said, there's not a bunch of new development and the town isn't getting bigger.
