When hate me came out I first discovered blue October. the first time I heard black orchid I cried. it is still the only song to ever do that to me. when I listened to the album hate me is on (sorry, slightly drunk and getting old, the memory isn't as good as it should be) it honestly felt like the songs were written for me. that is a sad thing to admit when you think of those songs. I have never felt the sort of emotions that I did at that time. Black Orchid may genuinely be part (at least) of the reason I tried to discover if life was for me

I was introduced to Blue October by my son in late 2009. At first I viewed them as a good band and did not really follow them too seriously. Then in 2012 I went back to college and my marriage had collapsed and was ending. I was sitting in the Illinois State University computer lab staring at my paper for theatre studies when for some reason Fear popped up on my recommended listening. I shrugged and shut off Mozart and listened; by the time it was over, I had a lump in my throat, stomach was tight and a couple tears had snuck out and were making their way down my cheeks. I was overwhelmed with emotion and had to leave the lab. I started to listen to everything Blue all the way back to the beginning. My first concert with them was at the Castle Theatre in Bloomington, IL, May 2014 with Zeale and Matthew Mayfield. Have been to every one of his Peoria visits since. Thank you Justin, for your voice, your passion and your music. It pulled this old soldier out of the depths. My concert wish is to follow you guys for a couple months when all the social control programs are finally set aside. Godspeed.

Sad facts of life is..If it was not for the negativity and evil that resides in people. Many of Justin's songs wouldn't exist .This world has a crazy balance and at times pretty outlandish and raw.So don't let that little icon start a flood of negativity in comments. Then it's just obstructs the view from how beautiful this is.And it gives life to something if we just ignore it, it'll fade away

@@melissacapobianco3116 music is the language of the universe, EVERYTHING has a vibration, a ressonance..it IS the highest art form, as it can evoke ANY and ALL human emotion..Hate me in particular ressonates with me, as both myself and my soulmate, my wife, are addicts..and last summer my wifes family opened up pandoras box, and shipped my wife off to a Southern florida rehab, completely ripping us apart, telling me one thing, her another. The manipulation that went on both by the rehab and by her family WAS CRIMINAL. They COMPLETELY shut me out, which in turn caused me tremendous trauma, and my poor wife was SHATTERED. She was forced into a sober living, told she WOULD NOT BE RETURNING TO ANYWHERE in the North East -not to me (married for 11 years, together for 13, bonnie to my clyde) not to ANY family, not to her best friend..so my wife made a choice to run off to be with some dude she Met in rehab.. I WAS DEVASTATED. ABSOLUTEY POSITIVELY CRUSHED.. BUT THAT WASNT THE END.. Anger was CONSUMING ME, hatred, spite..until I checked myself Into a South Philly state ran shithole for a detox There I laid..broken..I would squeeze my eyed shut and hold my breathe, wishing for death, all I would see was a flashing game over sign in my mind eye Such is the love i have for this woman..and I had an epiphany I thought you will never get her back being a savage asshole and by calling her a lying such and such. You need to find a "work around, john" Kindness, empathy, is the only way.. So I planted the seed..bought her a plane ticket home and told her I would welcome her back with open arms, when she is ready It took less then a week She flew to her best friends in New York, and then another month-but the woman I adore came back into my arms.. We both wept for 5 mins during our 1st embrace.. I'm not going to lie- Its BEEN HARD. Trust has been broken, we both suffer from trauma, I'm not a crier, at all. I'm a hardened roofer entering my 24th summer, but nearly everyday I would look deep into her blue eyes and let one lone tear fall from my eye Uttering the line from Hate me "How could you do this to me?" This went on Until new years eve When she FINALLY broke down completely and gave me the most heart felt apology. Fact Forward 5 months, were still together..fighting ..been up against THE UNIVERSE, or so it seems..a stalker has hacked both our phones and has been trying to end our marriage.. I hope this little story resonates with at least someone Some may see me taking my wife back as a sign of weakness.. Others , May see it as a deep strength..I know lovingvmy wife is the easiest yet hardest thing I will ever do. I am eternally saddened that our perfect union has forever been tainted, but I am eternally grateful to have such a bright light back in my life. Justin went into this monologue about pain and depression and mental health before they played Into the Ocean and I fucking BROKE DOWN in the middle of the crowd. It hit me so hard... And then he did it again with Home and I broke down again, lmao. Probably because my wife and I had a VERY hard time starting a family. Since then I've seen them every year live. Will see every show until they eventually retire. Their music means that much to me. My daughter was 4... And Blue October was her first concert.

@@GeminiWoods I saw them my first time in 2011 when I was 23 and I saw all these people a decade or more older than me screaming some of the angrier songs. I didn't understand at the time, I was just starting my life, I felt. I commented to my friend about how odd it looked. Saw them again at 33 and I was one of those people screaming some of those same songs I commented about. Awesome you brought your daughter to see Blue October. I need to buy my tickets for their show in November,

absofuckinloutly love listening to justin in blue October and on his own. I listen to him for hours a day and night and totally relate to him so much. I've been clean from coke for almost 2 years now and his music and lyrics have been so instrumental in my recovery. Also the song hate me made me want to get clean in the first place because I felt every word of it. He's a shining star in my life. I must get all his songs on cd's just incase I'm ever without internet

I always loved Blue October since Hate Me came out. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I went into the hospital for depression and PTSD, that I began listening to more of their music that I felt my feelings being understood through So Many of their songs. As so many of us who love this band probably can relate. I’m learning to now play the guitar to their songs. Thank You for being an inspiration through the good times and the bad. Healing through music is the Greatest Gift. ❤️🙏🥰

I suffer from mental illness myself. Clinical depression which some days can just throw me back into that same familiar corner, severe PTSD, and the combination together is so overwhelming that some days I just break down into tears for Awhile. I don’t let it define who I am, however it is a struggle at moments. A big one. My faith is in God 💯. Also the music of Blue October has helped me to not feel so alone and misunderstood. For years my family could see the depression within me and never understood. It started at such a young age along with anxiety attacks which I thought was just me doing it to myself in some way. And would actually blame myself and tell myself to stop being such a coward. This band has helped me get through So Many Broken Down Days. Along with talking to God Each Day. Thank You Justin and the Band. I’m grateful for your Beautiful Music. It Really Helps me through the worst of my days. God Bless. 💙🙏

This is me still listening to this amazing song at 60 years old and it reminds me so much of my 5 children. I use to think they actually picked Me to be their Mom and I did think it was a amazing they picked me knowing I was bipolar, a little broken and I was going to be the best Mom I could Do all the best things, and of course I've done too much this time and screwed things up right now with 4 of them have really taken picking me away from me, so this song today means so much, plus besides the beautiful incredible words, the violin reminds me of one of my extremely talented autistic nephews, from my amazing neice. I think I'll call her today it's been a while and speaking of autism and the broad spectrum-today my autistic creative grandson with the same name as his cousin and born within a week of each other have the same name and both autistic and have never met each other -today's my grandson's 17th birthday I got to talk to him a while "just about midnight" (you can see how important and extreme music in my home) Thanks Justin and you guys the acoustic times as they are so memorable I LOVE ALL OF YOU FROM A FELLOW HOUSTONIAN!! WE ARE PRETTY SPEACIAL AND THINGS ALWAYS GET BETTER, I know that cause God keeps me around here for some reason and so that gives me my purpose

At 11:58 Justin begins "Hate Me" but not as you've heard it, that bangin' raw awesome version, but instead this is done in an acoustic, more measured, and more soulful in my opinion version that is beautifully done. He says he originally wrote it to be sang like this but it was nearly a 7 minute long song so he paired it down. I was always (and still am) nuts about the popularized version already but I also really love this version. Thanks so much for sharing it.

Funny enough, it was actually one of their "happier" earlier songs that I first remember hearing, "Calling You". I went to a buzzfest or something in Dallas area back when that was their album that was out and just fell hard for them in the limited half hour they had to play. That band touched my soul in a way none have ever been able to, before or since. I've so often heard the term criminally underrated, which I can agree with, but also I feel they and Justin are so real and honest in a way that not everyone feels comfortable with or able to relate to. I am forever thankful for this music though as it has literally kept me going at times I wasn't sure I could make it on my own. I hope you always keep doing what you do.

This guy is definitely a poet. I don’t think he should be in the singers category. He obviously haves a great voice, but his words cut a soul like a sword. He doesn’t even feel the need when he’s writing to make words to rhime. It’s unbelievable. He just needs to start putting out the lines and the music grows by itself. This guy it’s unbelievable underrated. But I think he knows how good is to be underrated. Otherwise, he knows that fame and success could make him selfcrash and selfburn. Best band in the world at the moment. Best song writer. Best singer. Unbelievable.👏👏👏👏

ive loved your music for many years now, a every time I listen I feel so connected that it free's me and allows me to express what my own words can't say. almost two decades together and 7 years gone by waiting for him to catch up and free him self of the life of active edition as I did, but he can't let go of that life. This version of Hate Me is amazing. Pretty damn haunting. I saw these guys right around Approaching Normal at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT, small venue, and it was electric. This dude's energy ignited the stage immediately. So great to see him coming out the other side of that darkness. God bless.
