Blue Ridge Parkway Motorcycle Trip Day 3 Part 3 of 3 FJR1300 Crash

Ending out the best and worst day of the trip with good weather, but a low speed crash, at least I did get some cool shots in and enjoyed the Parkway. Here's a tip that is common sense to anyone living with hills, but simply something I had never thought about, heard about or was taught even in my advanced riding course. U-turns on hills are completely different than flat ground! Now I know and knowing is half the battle ;) Final parts cost was $1070, so better than it could have been that's for sure. No real damage that effected the rest of the trip, just pride!

I just want to say that it took some guts to put this video on youtube for everyone to see. So many people would have just cut that part out to save face but by showing us all what happened it gives us the opportunity to learn from your mistake and I have most definitely filed that one away for future reference. Thanks again for posting this and keep up the great work, your videos are awesome!

Now I know why I am installing T-REX on my new 2017 FJR. I swear your video scares the crap out of me. I am installing T-REX Front Engine and Saddle Guard before putting it on the road ... Meanwhile, I am learning how to walk it in and out of my driveway. The FJR is undoubtedly Topsy. It has been 23 years since I have ridden a 512 pounds Honda 750K Anniversary Edition. After my first drop of my HONDA and (a bruised ego) from a turn on an oil slick in front of the WTC; I rode straight to my dealership for a set of crash -bar installation... You are teaching me a lot Brian...

MrTanker10a I’m with you, I just bought a 2016 with 2300 mi. on it and it’s been 30 yrs. since my last bike. I’m getting protection before I even ride it. My friends are so anxious for me to go riding with them, but I’m in no hurry. I’m just pushing it around trying to get used to the weight.

I dropped my VN 1500 on a hairpin curve, with a stop sign midway through it, on a steep hill. When I got to the stop sign, my feet wouldn't hit the ground. Once that beast was about 35 degrees, it was all over. Broke my break lever.

Man that sucks, glad you are all good. Naked bikes are awesome, I love my SV650....nevertheless the reason I got the FJR is because the wind protection on long rides. On the positive side you now have new material to share w/ the audience on how to replace / repair parts....and possibly how to properly make a U-turn ;-) You are a good sport to share all this experience.

I'm probably going to get a 2015 FJR this week and Canyon Cages for the engine and luggage are likely being to be my first purchase. I've ridden for 10-11 years, but I've gone down on gravel once, and dropped my bike a couple times on accident during that time, enough to know things can easily happen.

Only 11 bleeps! Pretty good! I'm watching this again, mainly cause youtube keeps recommending it to me, and some of these comments just baffle me. This is a very experienced rider with a heavy bike that made a low speed, down grade, u turn that went down. I've almost done the same thing twice, not on an fjr, and I'm 6'8" 340lbs with plenty of body strength. When they start to go it's almost impossible to hold them up!

The smoothness of the FJR never ceases to amaze me, even after a crash it's still turbine smooth. Glad you walked away from that one. You may have been mad at yourself for dropping it doing a U-turn, but at least you didn't wrap it around a tree at 55 mph like everybody else manages to do on that road.

I'm back for a return visit to this video. As bad as this experience it was for you, there are many teaching points about preparation and thinking on your feet that apply to this and many other situations. Bike drops are a risk all of us face. The discussion about the parts was helpful too. Sorry you had to pay the price for those lessons learned but thank you for the gift. All the best.

After 48 years of riding without an accident, my wife and I just traded off the '06 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic for a '12 Can Am Spyder RT-SE5. The CA isn't for everyone, I will admit, but as we're both in our mid to late 60's, we recognized that the Harley was (for us), just becoming too unwieldy, heavy, and cumbersome to maneuver around with ease and peace of mind. I've been fortunate not having an accident, but am not naive enough to believe that it could, and never would happen to me. It could happen tomorrow. But hopefully, knock on wood, it won't.

A full dresser with typical load weighs upwards of 1000 lbs. Plus rider/passenger. Don't drop that in the road doing a U-turn. Although I will say the damage won't be a severe, if there's damage at all, as that little lightweight plastic bike in the video.

Wow, I feel for you. I've got a Concours, and u-turns are a nightmare on two lane roads. After 42000 miles I've got several scratches and heavy plastic rubs. Even had the left side bag tore off when a cager passenger decided to get out and direct traffic, as I tried to get by. Luckly, it popped right back on. Although it does leak now. I've always figured to replace that stuff when getting ready to sell. Frightening to see how fast it adds up.

We've a saying about bikers. There are two kinds of them; those who have fallen and those who will fall. As much as it sucks to fall you can count yourself lucky if it happened on slow speed. Better to have a "hospital" visit for the bike than to the rider.

Thanks for posting this video. I've promised myself an FJR1300AS next year, looking at what happened to you, the bike doesn't do too well when it falls over. My old Deauville was good for that, no damage... yep, I also screwed up a u-turn :) I love the bike! Honda man for years but the ST is a bit old and only 5 speeds, hence moving to Yammy. You appear to be a very safe rider! 6th sense.

Interestingly enough I had mine fall over 4 times while basically standing still, one of those times while trying a tight U-turn on a sand covered road. That bike weighs in at 650 lbs, and once it get past its balance point it is almost impossible to keep it from completely falling over. I never dumped mine at any speed thank God, but I did sell it when I finally realized it was just too heavy for me at my height of 5'8". You were correct in your other video though, that wide seat takes up that leg length so I could sit dead butt in the saddle and still have both feet flat on the ground. Riding it was a dream though. If they engineers could design that same bike with a lower seat, I might consider buying another one. IT IS THAT GOOD OF A BIKE !

Bryan, I'm very happy to see that you were okay in this crash. While I STILL don't have my bike yet (credit took a worse beating than your bike did because I had to get the mortgage company to help out while I was unemployed), you've taught me a couple of more lessons about riding. First, don't pull a U-Turn on a hill. Secondly, the rider is far more important than the bike. There is insurance for the bike, that's why we buy it. It isn't so hard to replace the rider. Third, come prepared. Bungees, towels, and a willingness to make things work to get you home. I'm glad the bike was repairable, I know it messed up at least that day of your ride, but you got home, you shared it will all of us, some of us learned stuff from it, and you found that there are a lot of nice people who are willing to stop and make sure you're okay. :) Love and miss that part of the country. Glad you made it home in one piece.

The first time I did the slow U-turn, I fractured my tow. The second time was only hurt feelings. Heard you mention the Sunshine Skyway bridge. I used to live in Sarasota and would cross that bridge all the time. Beautiful area. Live in PA now.

I too did exactly the same thing......tried to do a U-turn on my 2013 FJR on a hill. Only small scratch on left bag, mirror finish scratch, and last small scratch on left side that I covered with a decal. Body shop wanted $450.00 to paint mirror, bag, and side trim. I used a little touch up paint on the scratch mirror and bag. Hardly see it now. But I learned about making a slow turn on hill. Bike went down and I just couldn't hold it up. Nice bike.

Glad you left your reaction in warts and all Bryan, we've all done it and I understand what you mean about u-turns on hills, I have to do one every day to get in to my driveway, in 80kmph traffic. Sometimes my balance falters a little, luckily I mostly ride smaller bikes and can catch it before it goes down. I find the maneuver easier if I do it at speed (30-40kmph) and lean the bike over hard, but that's often difficult in traffic. We've all dropped a bike, anybody who says they haven't is either a beginner who will or a liar. I hope the bike comes good soon and the repairs aren't too costly. However the most important thing is you aren't injured. The thing I take from motorcycling is every day, every ride there is something to learn from. Unfortunately your day's lesson cost you paint and panels.

It happens. Came very close to dropping my new (to me) Honda 750 Super Sport in a parking lot the first few days I had it. Glad the damage is/was relatively easy to fix, though!

Hey man, go with the flow, your ok, no injuries. This my friend is what motorcycle tripping is all about. Its an adventure, not a soft convertible Sunday pleasure ride. Get the Porche if that's what your after.....Its a two wheeled, in the wind, against the elements adventure. At the exact minute you embrace that fact, it will become a total pleasure, good, bad and everything in between. A little damage yes.. we call those road scars, at least those were on your bike.....today. Learn to love the adventure and every trip become the best f--n trip you've done.@!! Ride on, be safe!

Well at least you got the balls to show how easy it is to make a SIMPLE ERROR & it happens to most of us all so quickly. Initially panic sets in and then later you realise how lucky you/we are and realise that the damage is not major. The shock is initially terrible but you do later start to realise how much worst it could have been and then begin to get grateful. Oh, I like the way you casually (properly) backed into the FJR and flawlessly picked it up using your back and body strength. Ah, you are a seasoned rider and a proper MAN as you did man-up. Oh, I am/was 5.3inches and have had and rode/owned Suzuki GSXR 750 - Bandit 1200 - Honda St1100 & St1300 Pans and many Harleys etc. I an now 63 years old and probably have shrunk to 5'2" by now, however I have a 2011 Harley Davidson CVO Road glide Ultra from new and I recently purchased a 2014 FJR1300AE and I really love the FJR. The Harley is a fine machine; however the FJR is still a very refined machine considering it now over 20 years old with only a few changes made to the engine over the years... There are still very few sports touring bikes that will beat the FJR1300 and especially the 2014 Generation 3 FJR1300AE. Kind Regards Tommy.

Mate I did this earlier this year with my FJ1200. Fully loaded panniers, at Mt Panorama ( Bathurst) race track. Its a normal road most of the year, did some sightseeing, and did a u turn from standstill on probably the steepest part of the track. It went over before I knew what was happening. Luckily my brother was there to lift the bike from my leg . I was overly tired from being at a 3 day rally, shouldn't have happened, but it did. You kick yourself for a week, repair the damage, and try not to let it happen again :)

Gotta give you a late thumbs up for sharing this, man. Yup every once in a while one needs to be reminded of what it was like to ride naked, lol.

Tipped my fjr1300 over 3 times already. Gotta learn to laugh about it. It’s a machine, built to be ridden. The scratches add character.

I'd take a low speed drop over a high speed slide any day. Cudos to you for posting this. Most of us have OR will drop our bikes. I dropped mine turing into a parking lot. Outside of my male ego and pride nothing much was damaged.

Dude.... I totally did the same thing this season with my wife on the back. No worse feeling in the world! I've done a million u-turns too. Don't feel bad. I picked the bike back up and kept trekking. No use getting too upset. My pride was hurt more than my bike >.

Don't feel bad about it because it happens to a lot more people that will admit to it, especially making a u-turn on a narrow two lane blacktop. I had my Concours for three days and on that day what happened to you happened to me too. Exactly almost, but all I had was a couple of scratches on my luggage cases, I lucked out pretty good.

Dude I totally feel your pain. I dropped my st1300 with me my wife on it while pulling over on an uneven road to get a picture of the welcome to Virginia sign. Oh, and it happened on a sunday afternoon (all dealerships closed) 2 days in on a 10 day trip from Florida to Canada. Broke the right mirror, and housing. Found a Honda dealer, and overnighted the parts and continued the trip. I was ready to head back home though.

Ouch! But then again. Not having a windscreen is no big deal. I don't have one, and enjoy the fresh air. You are alive at least, and the bike can always be fixed. Consider yourself lucky. Could have been much worse. Watch those hills.
