In the 1970s, evil in the Southeast was the exclusive business of one group of friends. Their loyalty to each other and their history was the only thing that kept them alive.

For most of his career, Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman has been investigating what happened that night: www.qcnews.com/blue-ridge-runs-red-growing-up-with-the-deadliest-man-in-the-southeast/

He hasn't been investigating anything. He got orders to solve all cold cases. He took the easiest route. Dead men can't testify.

Best podcast ever. How could Billy have been involved in two separate homicides at nearly the same time 5 hours away from each other. Listen to In the Red Clay.

Thanks for covering this with the update . In 1978 I married a Barrow Co. gal and she used to talk about the subject from time to time but other than hearing about the Wrens killings I knew very little about it . Later in life I researched a little bit about it but that was before the update on the Boone murder . I also didn't know that Billy had been Baptised . The widow seems like a sweet woman . I will being watching for any future updates if there are any .

For those interested in this, there is a podcast called In the Red Clay. You can thank me later. Billy Birt’s life story told by his son. Not Shane, but Stoney. Stoney knows.

This doesn’t even seem like it’s real. You would think that his father would come clean for his closure, if nothing else. His widow is such a beautiful strong woman who was able to make it with 5 children & $30.

Her son Stonewall Birt has a different opinion of her. Listen to the last episode of "In The Red Clay" podcast. He originally refused to talk about his mother. Setting a couple conditions of being interviewed, one being DO NOT MENTION MY MOTHER.

People today just don’t realize how seedy everything was just a few decades ago. Everyone wants to look back at the good old days, but it’s always been dangerous out there. The cast of criminals just rotates.

It's funny because I once worked with the sweetest lady, and she told me that she was somehow family to a top mob family I forgot which once she said but I remember it being one most people know but shows that the family is not evil just because their family was.

It’s crazy theyre still talking about my family all these years later. Billy’s grandpa and mine were brothers. My mom Brenda Lee is the first cousin to Harold Chancey. To keep hearing these stories are crazy. My mom has told me a lot of things she witnessed because she seen a lot. Her dad my grandpa Bush Chancey was Billy’s right hand man a lot of the times.

"Oh hey kids, i know i know, things got a little sideways back then with the thing you know. Well you know how your mom is. Shes a heck of a button pusher. Its ok though. You see, since then i have found the tooth fairy and as long as you give him all your teeth (provided 10% of them are gold) you get to live with him forever up in the clouds. Now i know this sounds like a really cool option for your after life plans but its not really an option as the only other option is you burn....forever. I know it sounds like he has a few screws loose but he only wants to burn people forever because he loves them and wants them to have good dentition and a bit of their gold. Oh did i mention once a year the easter bunny comes over and we get to throw an all weekend banger? As it turns out Peter.. well 2 things. He really wishes he was a girl and he really wishes he was oviparous. So what we do for him is paint a bunch of eggs rainbow colors and then he hides them from us and makes us look for them as he taunts us with a real 'how do you like not having eggs!!???!!' tone. I dont think he realizes we dont lay eggs either. Oh well. It is a little bizarre but theres booze. You will love it. You just have to watch out for the gang of popes that are out wondering around all hours morning, noon and night. If they get you cornered they make you play hide the popes purple headed yogurt slinger in your mole mound. I know its not great especially as they usually have your stolen gold teeth flaunting them in your face and using proceeds from some that they sell to give to the the evil 3 balled lawyer that ensures they get to keep playing their game on the unsuspecting kids out under gas getting a root canal. Other than that its awesome. Or at least beats the hell out of burning for all eternity... Yay!"

Decades ago, fwiw, I had an NDE (near death experience). I had one at 4, but that was all bliss and not instructional as it were. I was simply greeted by these wingless flying beings with light where their faces would have been. It might sound scary, but it wasn't. They were joyful and familiar. That place felt like my real home, but I was glad when I didn't die and could see my Mom again. Anyway, when I was 19, I was dead for six minutes and was greeted by Papa, my great-grandfather who had died several years before. He was with a dog I didn't recognize. (Will explain in a bit.) ❤ The part of the experience that changed everything was this tsunami of love: it was so overwhelming that it really needs another name altogether. And I realized something - and unlike religion, I'm not claiming it's proof of a thing 😂 I met a God - not some old guy but a Force: a separate Consciousness Who loves us all equally, eternally, immensely and without exception. The idea of a God-inflicted hell is a fiction created by the cruel or unknowing for the fearful. We'll all experience the effects of our actions on everyone we ever meet, rippling further out than we know. I reckon a fiery hell would be preferable to some vs that. Did it change me? Yes and in ways I didn't count on. After that, when I got pissed off at someone - even if it was because they hurt another person and not me - I was very uncomfortable with judging them. This was not my idea. Born and raised in the American deep south, I knew that God has no favorites among religions. So about five years after that, our family in Florida found some old photos of Papa. In one, he was holding a fishing pole in one hand and his other hand was around the same pup in my NDE 😮 My great uncle explained that Papa's bride, our great grandmother, didn't like animals and that dog, Jip, was the first and only one Papa ever had. This was the first they had seen him, too: the photo was in a calendar in his tool box that no one had ever opened before. It's one of my favorite mysteries in this life. I'll probably delete this and even wonder why I'm telling a stranger here. Maybe because I'm old now. And there is so much hate going around. I think I've done every crime/sin in one life or another, I guess. I know we'll see our loved ones again one day when these skin schools are over with. And since I've had dozens of dogs, cats, birds and horses 😂 it's pretty great we see them later, too. Funny how alike some evangelicals and atheists can be: they're each so certain they're right and can't stand anyone who believes differently. Hubris makes them cousins if not closer. Peace be.
