Back in the 1960s my family was on a camping trip in Yosemite. We were excited to see a bird's nest over our campsite and looked forward to watching the little family for a week. But it soon became evident that mama was tangled in something. She would try to fly off but was tethered to the nest by a string or ribbon. We alerted a park ranger who said, That's nature; leave it alone. We and other campers were quite distressed by this and finally, to everyone's relief, another park ranger climbed a ladder and freed her. Thank you for freeing Biddy! It's not always in an animal's best interests to intervene, but sometimes it's just obvious.

The most important detail of a nest box is the size of the entrance. It needs to be small enough for the intended bird species to just squeeze through. To keep birds of prey, and the arch enemy, the squirrels out... 🐦🐿

Yarn and string is probably a lot less hazardous than human hair. At least it is possible to untangle these materials. Try to untangle long hair from a brush. Pretty much impossible. It is also a lot stronger than yarn and string. Tensile strength of hair is even stronger than steel.

Any idea what happened Fionn? Along with so many others I was watching their progress and looking forward to seeing the chicks eventually hatch and fly. Delighted you were there to help her escape whatever it was that tangled her.

I believe it was human hair tangled in one of her feet ! Thank you for watching :)

Poor Biddy. That was hard to watch. 😔 I'm glad that you were able to save her though, and she has had more chicks since then.

This may sound _very_ harsh but I am convinced that you did the right thing by letting nature take its course. You gave the chicks a chance, the mother didn't return so... there was no way for them. As cruel as this may sound this is what nature is all about: only the strong survive.
@tristanlambert658

Bully Maguire that’s human logic, modern human logic at that. Animals can’t spare their strength to help those that can’t help themselves, the strong need their strength to ensure their own survival. That’s how it works.

@@FionnODonoghue Thanks for the reply. I watched the time lapse with my 90 year old grandfather. He has house wrens that nest in a little wooden house on his back deck. He LOVES them. He's an old country guy who always had feeders and just loves watching the birds. Thought about trying to put a camera in that house this winter but they've been using it for so long, I'm afraid they'd notice someone messing with it and not come back so I said forget it. Might put up a new one and see if anything bites. We'll see.

This is good to know because if I ever put out my longer hair for birds I’ll cut it to being 2 inches long and no longer. Thank you for this upload! It’s very informational and good for putting out the right materials for nesting birds!

2 iches to a 2 inch bird is still fairly long. Best to just not put out hair.
@kiki-drawer2669
@kiki-drawer2669 3 года назад
@@JoeyHaven I think it would depend on the hair but I see your point. You also don’t want to cut it to short either but I was thinking of a length that mimics fox fur or something like dear wich can get quite long dissing their shedding season
