Melnet Theme of the month for March 2011 - Tunes from Scotland.
The Bluebell Polka, famously played and recorded by Jimmy Shand and on top of the pops in 1955
I chose this to demonstrate that it can be done in the original 3 keys (G-D-C) on a two row (D/G) melodeon.
Anahata - Oakwood D/G melodeon
Melnet is at www.melodeon.net

Looks like I don't have dots on the web site for this. I'll have a rummage and see if I can add some... PS try tunearch.org/wiki/Bluebell_Polka_(The)#Bluebell_Polka_.28The.29:_Annotations

Love it! Really well played, as usual. I shall go away and try and learn it myself.

That's some workaround in the C music and a bit of a stretch even for your great abilities!

I got a 2.5 row with a view to learning this tune (no accidentals on my 2 row) and am screwing my courage to the sticking place and actually having a go at it now. Lovely jaunty tune. :)

You have inspired me to get out my old D/G melodeon and give it a go, Ginny from N. California. Thanks for the post. Yes, it sounds like "Flop Eared Mule."

Nice to see/hear it done in the original three keys. If I can do it on a D whistle I think you box players should too ;o)

Well...The Fiddler's Companion (which is a reference I trust) says "The melody sounds quite similar to the American 'Flop Eared Mule.'" Not even "is a version of..." It seems there are many titles related to Flop Eared Mule, and quite a few related to Bluebell Polka too. Note the Bluebell Polka has a third section of music which the Flop Eared Mule doesn't, quite apart from other differences in detail. I guess we'll never know what F. Stanley had been listening to when he wrote Bluebell Polka.

Samson James Several, but none of them is just me playing tunes on melodeon: see maryanahata.co.uk/discography.html (songs and tunes) and www.fendragon.co.uk/recordings.php (ceilidh band)
