Bluecoats 2015 Trumpet Soloist Ben Gunnarson performing this years production, "Kinetic Noise" before the DCI Wold Championship Semifinals in Indianapolis. We were housed at Indiana Wesleyan University, and were using their outdoor track facility for our full ensemble rehearsal. What an amazing production!

Hey Ben, just wanted to say you are incredible. I have watched this video hundreds of times as well as your tilt video. I've been playing trumpet for 4 years now 6th grade through now my 9th grade year. I plan on auditioning for the bluecoats my senior year and I just have one question, what foot do you guys step off with? because I have watched all sorts of go pro videos and videos of runthroughs from the stands like multicam videos and I swear I see one move y'all step of with left foot, then another y'all use your right. it confuses me.
@BenGunnarson

Thanks for the compliments! And it's usually the left. Depending on the count structure of the song and what the drill move is, sometimes we need to step off on the right foot.

I just landed a spot with the Colt Cadets for the 2017 season, sort of. It's not set in stone, because of financial problems, but if I can come up with $975 before June, I'm gonna be playing baritone for a drum corps for the first time.

Max Behymer well, it does depend on the year...It can be a little more, or less. Anyways, I highly encourage it! I got back from our first spring training camp a few hours ago. The show this year is absolutely amazing. This is gonna be one of the best years for the Colt Cadets in a while. If you live close, you should come watch. What instrument do you play?
@maxbehymer8535
@maxbehymer8535 7 лет назад
I play mallet percussion, but I'm thinking of learning baritone during the course of this year so I can be on the field. And yes, I do live relatively close. In fact, a friend of mine marched with the Colt Cadets in 2015, she plays trumpet.

And since then, how much have you practiced at home? What tips do you have for someone trying to build chops? Thanks and keep up the good work.
@BenGunnarson
@BenGunnarson 8 лет назад
Hey! I started playing in 4th grade and have been playing for 13 years now. I practice enough so that I can accomplish my goals easily and consistently. As far as "building chops", it really depends on what you want to do.
@scorpionkid991

+scorpionkid991 make it to an audition camp. Even if it's not clear if you want to march for that season, go to a camp anyway to get a feel for the activity. You'll be amazed at how eye-opening that is no matter what your skill level.

+ToweringTimeTable Actually I have another question. You probably don't want to give away secrets that make you great, so you don't have to answer this. What do you do to practice? Well of course you practice your music, but I mean do you have like a system to get the most out of your practices? I mean you personally by the way. Not like all of Bluecoats rehearsals hahaha.

How come you close ur valves when you bring ur horn down?
@BenGunnarson

Doclin 0409 it's the Bluecoats technique. It changes from corps to corps but that's just how we do it.
@bysuke-
@bysuke- 4 года назад
You probably know this by now but it helps have a snap motion and not have any movement besides up and down so the horn doesn't shake. You get a better grip and it helps especially with the lightweight of trumpet and the other weights like mello and baritone etc.

+Dylan Wootton DCI usually has members from ages 14-21. However, most of the people at the Bluecoats are either about to be or are already in college. We had one person in the corps last year who was 16. The youngest trumpet player we had was going into his senior year of high school.

A bit late, but yes. It's slightly flat, but it makes it easier when going from, say E/A to Eb/Ab or E/A to D/G. Depends on the person if they use it or the normal 1-2 combination, as well as how fast the rhythms that you have to play. It really is just more for convenience.

Depending on step sizes, rests, choreography, dance, and drill moves (along with mixed meter time signatures), we start on either foot depending on what we need. Left foot first is just a simple guideline to follow.
