Bluefish on the Flats | Cape Cod, MA | S20 E06

When bluefish move onto the sandy flats on the south side of Cape Cod, they present fun and exciting topwater fishing opportunities. They can also be frustratingly picky, at least when it comes to sight casting with flies.
On this trip, Jimmy tries to get a good bluefish on the fly rod while Chris casts topwaters.

We are in a bluefish drought here in Raritan Bay NY. The last 5 Spring runs have been lackluster. Very few lean and hungry Spring busters. Even the summer/ fall snapper run was terrible. Glad they are healthy elsewhere at least.

Jimmy, Chris was suppose to lure the fish to your fly yet it was the opposite you were luring the alligators to Chris, great video as always thank you, Peace.

Bluefish are too often unnecessarily maligned - I've fished that same area for years, and it's always exciting when one of those mean bastards hits, especially on a fly rod-pound for pound among the toughest I've caught, including albies, bonefish, and tarpon. Cool video!

well said in the intro. blues are aggressive, mysterious fish. i caught a monster last year off of cape ann in a hell of a northeast wind. 12-15+ lbs, definitely my pb of that particular species. i mention it because that was the only bluefish i have seen in years and i fish 2-3 hours a day [albiet a lot further north than cape cod.] just a mean, enigmatic fish. i was thigh deep in my shorts and did not want him swimming that close to my junk. hooked a giant bass in that same storm and the blue pulled harder. they're so violent that they foul themselves and end up wearing your plug like a harness high on their heads and shoulders. pulled harder than a 30# bass and that is no exaggeration. when i was young they would come and go. i would see them working on the essex river and they would bite small stripers and bunker in half. you could catch them on chunked bait. now they are rare in ipswich, essex, gloucester, southern nh and the merrimack. i've never understood why there are no regulations regarding their size. they're not a great eating fish. i think the attitude is there in part because they kill and eat small stripers.

I love topwater fishing for blues but I got the biggest 1s using chunk bait on the bottom at the race.

Need a moratorium on these things we didn’t know we had em so good til they were gone cmon 15 fish no size limit in jersey a year ago there needs a zero take or slot or something haven’t seen a bluefish consistent over 10lbs inshore in way too long

It's the same in RI. There used to be a bag limit of 15 per person, but now, they slashed it to only 3. The same for fluke. It went from 8 to 4. Cod went from 10 to 5, and as of this year, there's a slot limit of 22-28 inches.
