lp.constantcon... Blues Brothers Guitarist Matt 'Guitar' Murphy Dead at 88
An incredible blues guitarist that mainstream audiences first got to know when he played fictionalized version of himself in the 1980 Blues Brothers film playing opposite Aretha Franklin. Remember that famous scene where Aretha warns him about going on the road with Jake and Elwood Blues while she sings her big hit 'Think'? He was also in the film's sequel 'Blues Brothers 2000' in 1998. He suffered a stroke 4 years after that movie was released which forced him into semi-retirement.
His nephew Floyd Murphy Jr, who performed with him, wrote on Facebook, "He was a strong man that lived a long long fruitful life that poured his heart out in every guitar solo he took,"
Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi saw Murphy playing in a New York club in 1978 and that same year he played on the Blues Brothers debut album, 'Briefcase Full of Blues.'
Murphy was born December 29, 1929 in Sunflower, Mississippi. He was just a kid when he first picked up the guitar. He moved to Chicago in 1948 - he was 19. That's where he played in the Howlin' Wolf band that, at the time, also featured Little Junior Parker.
He also played alongside legends like Etta James, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Otis Rush, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Memphis Slim and Joe Louis Walker.
No cause of death was given. - by John Beaudin

I unexpectedly met Matt at the Coffee Pot in Roanoke Virginia in the mid 1980's. This big guy comes up and shakes my hand and asks "Are you staying for the show?" I didn't recognize him. And said who's playing. He said me! I'm Matt Guitar Murphy. I was dumbstruck! He was so nice and personable! Of course I stayed. What a musician and just all around nice guy. I treasure that chance meeting. Now more than ever. Godspeed Matt.

here we go again :(. Rest In Peace, Matt "Guitar" Murphy. I LOVED that scene with Aretha for "Think". Saw this at the movies which is rare for me. The way he kicked off Sweet Home Chicago was GREAT!! The Cort Guitar Company offered a series of artist models in the early '00's and the MGM was always my fave (sort of a strat shape but really more PRS, 2 'buckers,,,i have an Arrow). I saw these in mags like GP and GW. Wish i knew more about his carreer. This video helped alot. I knew about the stroke which was a surprise (guy was always in good shape). You just never know. Long life, though this is still sad news.

His playing on Briefcase Full Of Blues and the Blues Brothers soundtrack is just a perfect blend of blues and soul. Just incredible playing. He and Steve Cropper complimented each other so well. Rest well, sir.

I met him in Boston when I was a passport specialist renewing his passport in 1995. He came to my window at the agency where I knew immediately who he was, so I asked him for his autograph which he gladly gave to me. I cherish it.

Kerkopes the shitty part of being a bluesman that was born in 98... All my heroes either already have died or are getting damn close. Heaven done called another Blues Stringer back home.
