Scrolling down the comments, maybe I missed it somewhere... Soothsayer was written for his aunt Suzie when she became ill. She passed away the following year. Aunt Suzie bought a young Buckethead his first guitar. There are actually several songs he wrote in her honor - 'Soothsayer', 'Aunt Suzie' and 'Sail on Soothsayer'. Special thanks and RIP, Suzie.

The guitar he is playing is the Buckethead Signature Les Paul, which has two kill switches and four extra frets. He is 6 ft 7 so "standard" guitars look like toys in his hands. I've seen him live 22 times. He not only plays guitar, he does knunchuks, moonwalks, robot dances, and gives out toys to to the people near the stage. He's amazing.

About time. I saw him live at Sony Hall in Manhattan in April 2019. Excellent. We were right up front and it was great. Bucket is 6' 6" to start with, and with the KFC bucket he looks 0ver 7 feet tall. A very clean player. He has around 305 album's out, so he is a prolific writer..

The great thing about Buckethead is that unlike a lot of fast, technical players he has not only speed and technique but also so much soul in his playing. Its not just arpeggios at 100mph for the sake of showing off, its part of the soul of the track

Buckethead is a really special guy, I don't think there will ever be another person quite like him. He's probably the most technically proficient guitar player to ever live, and yet he doesn't have a shred of ego. A lot of people say "music is what I live for", but for Bucket I think that might be literally true.
@MegaMarcin98
@MegaMarcin98 Год назад
There is a version of soothesayer with a crazy little robotic sounding shred part after an impossibly alive sounding lick he plays, right after he messes up a single note a few bars before. That shred lick he plays has got the be the most incredible sounding piece of shred I've ever heard, it encapsulates the essence of buckethead in about 20 seconds

This is one of the best reactions i've seen to soothsayer. This is a true guitarist's reaction, From noticing that BH went early at 2:27 to actually noticing the bit he does at 3:23 (which no other reactors noticed) made me really happy, thanks for the vid and good luck on your future.

@delraybrewer

that 2:27 part is just luck to get it right. Once he hits play on his board to starting playing, he hopes it lines up but it's unlikely. I have the same problem when I use the backing track when I play the song.
@stickaman

A couple things of note: as mentioned-a prolific composer and musician-has over 40+ studio albums and almost 300 "pikes" which are his digital EP's, he can play any genre of music-check out his cover of BB King-The Thrill is Gone; he never plays live songs note for note as he always will play it differently each time; there is never any redundancy with his music as all his releases sound different; he is great friends with Bootsy Collins and plays guitars on Bootsy's album. He is a big fan of MJ, Lebron, Michael Jackson. Check out his plethora of music-it is a never ending treasure hunt. For studio albums check out his tribute to Michael Jackson called Capt Eos Voyage; A real diamond in the rough; shadows between the sky; and electric sea-these are my personal favorites.

A lot of the live performances are heavily improvised as well. The recorded version of this song has so much emotion, you feel exactly the grief and loss he felt when he lost his aunt who this song is dedicated to.

Also, Devon, The Bucket is 6'7" tall (7ft to the top of the bucket), so his Les Paul is a 1.25 size built to fit him. He learned from Paul Gilbert, who has a similar left hand stretch. He's had 451 albums last I checked, and his blues are will make you cry. Someone mentioned "Thrill is Gone," but this was played at a wedding reception, and the recording instrument is completely overdriven. I can recommend some blues for you. He played several times with Shawn Lane. Once he heard a really fast Lane solo, (copying a mechanical pianist who composed a song too fast to play), not knowing that it was overlaid with several tracks in the studio to get it as fast as the composer intended. Bucket (aka Brian Carroll) thought it was a one-of and came within several strokes of matching it. The two developed a friendship and deep respect for the other. So.....Brother.....if you want your jaw to drop to the floor, listen to at least the second half of Pike 65 (Hold Me Forever). It is a continuous 13 minute solo incorporating every style and effect he'd experienced at that time.

Wow, that's really impressive that you can pick up on what he's playing so quickly just by hearing and seeing it. I play saxophone and the only things I learned by ear were Careless Whisper and Epic Sax Guy because I'm a tenor player and sight transcribing alto music is one of the few things I find harder than learning by ear. I have gotten compliments on my sight-reading ability at auditions though.

As a hobbyist guitar player myself, one thing I always appreciated about Buckethead (and there are many things) is his vibrato. Vibrato is vibrato but just about every player will develop their own feel and approach to it. It can sometimes be something that can get overlooked but can have a tremendous impact on the vibe and groove of a song.

Always nice to see players of different styles appreciating Buckethead, he can and does play everything, not just slagging him for "oh he is a shredder therefore automatically he has no soul" - with something so subjective. His shredding stuff does involve emotions like euphory and general happiness in me that no other style does quite like him.
