Today I share some blues pedalboard tips for beginners and breakdown all the essential tones and the pedals you'll need to achieve them.
If you're a blues guitarist who loves blues guitar tones and you're looking to update your pedalboard but you're not sure what to buy then this video is for you. There are so many guitar pedals on the market these days that knowing what to buy can be really difficult so this video will offer you helpful advice on what pedals to consider buying.
In this video I explain the main categories of overdrive used by the blues icons to help you narrow down your search. I also talk about modulation pedals which will elevate your tone to the next level and help you recreate some of those iconic Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan tones!
Here are some Time Stamps:
Intro.- 0:00
Blues Solo (Wampler Tumnus + Trex Alberta + Slap Back Delay) - 0:10
What's This Video About - 0:37
The Tube Screamer Pedal - 1:06
Tube Screamer Solo Clip - 2:26
Klon-Style Overdrive Pedals - 2:55
Klon-Style Solo Clip (Wampler Tumnus) - 4:07

During the guitar performance clips I'm playing through a clean Fender Blues Junior V3 (all stock) so all the drive your hearing in the clips is coming from the pedals.
I'm also playing my 1997 USA Standard Fender Stratocaster with House of Tone pickups and my Fender Vintera 50s Modified Telecaster.

Great job, Chris. Video, content and music are all great! Just stumbled across your channel today. Not much of a fuzz fan myself, but will be picking up a Thorpy Veteran soon. The Wampler Euphoria is great for ‘transparent’ overdrive too, although the mode switch means it can do a lot more than that.

Oddly I've never heard of a univibe before but this is the 3rd video I've seen in so many days recommending one. I wish I kept my Marshall Blues Breaker pedal from when I was a teen, I think I traded it for a metal zone lol

I wonder what sort of pedals the three electric blues guitarists with the greatest tone of them all used - I mean Albert King, BB King and Albert Collins. Any idea?
@brucemarie3059
@brucemarie3059 3 года назад
this does not tkje into account the amp, Tube Screamer or Tumnus would sound choked on a mid-heavy amp. Fuzz and muff may disappoint if ran on a mid-scooped amp. Also a lot of them play well with strat singles or P90 but not so much with humbuckers The rule of the game, know your guitar, know your amp, then choose pedals that do not clash with frequencies of your guitar and your amp Nice playing, BTW

Hi,I've just few years experience with electric guitars and I'm considering upgrading my gears but I'm not sure in which direction. At the moment I have a basic zoom g3n /sterling cutlass hss with a bugera v5. Would you say that would be better to replace the multieffect with an OD+ DD or maybe a better multieffect such as moeer ge300 ? The last thing that I was considering was to change the amp to a blackstar id 100. I would use the equipment mainly for home practice. Thank you
@ChrisHarveyGuitar
@ChrisHarveyGuitar 2 года назад
I think for home use I would really consider looking at something like the HX Stomp. They have amazing amp models and modulation effects. I know a lot of people who play at home or record at home that love the HX Stomp. So many effects and possibilities for a relatively affordable price used.

No idea what those pedals do. I would prefer the same riff on the same guitar, with and without the pedal, to compare the with/without sound. And not switching from a tele to a strat after the first sample

I really dig your tone. I have the same amp. May I ask what your amp settings are?
@ChrisHarveyGuitar
@ChrisHarveyGuitar 3 года назад
Thanks Chris! Really appreciate it man! No problem, I tend to run the volume around 5 or 6 (Master volume set to whatever is reasonable for home use). Then I tend to run treble at around 11 o’clock, bass around 2 o’clock and middle really low! Then I pretty much always have a boost pedal (usually the Wampler Tumnus) always on just to fatten the tone without adding any overdrive! I hope this helps 😊

thw univibe is not a chorus or a vibrato. if you have ears, it's obvs a phaser type modulation. sheesh. plus trying to talk about fuzz when you don't use fuzz or have any?? OK so now I will talk about my vagina...........
@ChrisHarveyGuitar
@ChrisHarveyGuitar 3 года назад
The univibe has a switch called “chorus/vibrato”... and I’ve owned plenty of fuzzes over the years. Just because I don’t own one now doesn’t mean I don’t have experience using them. Thanks for watching ☺️
@matejkore
@matejkore 3 года назад
@@ChrisHarveyGuitar if you used your ears then you would hear phaser not whatever the labels said that they used for marketing reasons. 5 seconds of research would have found that. Thanks for reading.
@ChrisHarveyGuitar
@ChrisHarveyGuitar 3 года назад
@@matejkore I appreciate your thoughts but you should really read the JHS blog on the Univibe, it’s a phase relationship but it’s certainly not a phaser, nor is it a chorus or vibrato, it’s a univibe, but the characteristic of the sound can similar to all 3. No point in spitting feathers over it. It is what it is! But if that detail bothered you then I’m very sorry.
@jacksonfingerland
@jacksonfingerland 3 года назад
@@ChrisHarveyGuitar mentioning JHS Josh Scott explicitly says it's a phaser not chorus/vibrato and he should know he's an engineer who makes univibes. Case closed.

yeah because instead of trying to do something new and original, it's always better to use time, talent, money, effort, and so on to simply reproduce stuff from 40 years ago, cos that's more worthwhile, even though if someone really wanted to listen to blues they could, oh, I dunno, buy some albums by Cream, Eric Clapton, BB King, Albert King, Rory Gallagher, or early Fleetwood Mac. In fact, I would rather go and listen to any of them than this. So, err, bye.

Not really sure what your point is...this video isn’t about stealing licks, it’s about the foundation of good tone and understanding the iconic tones that defined the blues genre. Thanks for watching ☺️

@matejkore 3 года назад
@@ChrisHarveyGuitar the foundation of "good tone" from 50 years ago that has zero relevance today. Thanks for reading.
@ChrisHarveyGuitar
@ChrisHarveyGuitar 3 года назад
@@matejkore I’d say it’s pretty relevant since every pedal manufacturer and every well respected guitarist today in the area of blues; John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith, Matt Schofield, Kirk Fletcher etc all use pedals inspired by these designs. I appreciate it’s good to be “different” but a lot of people like to chase those tones today and recreate them for enjoyment. Not everyone wants to be a trailblazer - it’s why every pedal company makes a Tubescreamer. so I’d say it’s pretty relevant but again, I’m sorry if that bothered you.
