Great video.Very helpful.I live here in Buffalo New York and sailing vessels are somewhat inexpensive here and in excellent condition. Lake Erie is fresh water and the boats only stay in the water about 6 months. They are only about between 30-40 ft in length tho. I also seen another video that there are quite a few sail boats for sale in Hawaii being that the sailors had enough of the Pacific crossing. Your thoughts ?

Hey Adam, thank you for watching and commenting. So it really depends on your goals for sailing. Hawaii is a tough one because if your goal is to get it back on the east coast or the Caribbean that’s going to be very time consuming and very expensive. Just getting it through the Panama Canal will be several thousand alone. Fresh water boats can be great but if you plan on using them in salt water you will need to adjust a few things. A 40 foot sailboat in my opinion is a great length and if it were a couple it would be perfect. 46 is about as big as I would go as anything bigger the need for crew occasionally becomes more trouble than it’s worth. Where you are located they are cheap because to get them to the ocean is spendy, transport, de mast , haul outs and so on so by the time it’s at the ocean you may have been able to just buy one already there for less. What kind of sailing are you hoping to do ? Are you thinking on the lake or would you like to head south to the Caribbean?

I am always skeptical of people doing video's on how to buy a boat, or get the best deals. How much experience do you actually have buying boats? How great of a deal did you get? I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone on youtube tell us to go to Panama on the Pacific side. Yachtworld has almost no boats listed on the Pacific side of Panama, or Panama at all. The Caribbean can be a great place. However it's expensive and time consuming going from island to island. If you aren't already there and sailing, the money spent on hotels and travel between the islands will kill any saving you find fast. Some have 14 day quarantines when you arrive. A time and money killer.

Hey Randy, thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. I wouldn't recommend anyone going anywhere to buy anything currently with all of the travel issues. I left the Florida keys in January and made it as far as Puerto Rico before travel restrictions stopped me going further south. Purchasing a boat and finding a deal will always come down to the buyer doing their own research and understanding where to go. Having been through the Panama canal I can assure you there are plenty of boats over there for a steal but they are not 40k boats and going there to buy a 40k boat would almost never make sense. If you are in the market for a 400k catamaran or 300k Monohull then yes you would want to research heavily the boats available there. If you're in the market for a 100k Modern island hopper then absolutely the Caribbean is where you should be looking, you don't want to go there and look you want to plan and research well ahead of time and limit your hopping around as that wouldn't make sense and you would kill any savings by doing that. If your in the market for a 50k monohull then yes digging around the more populated sailing areas of the states is where you should start. The very best thing you can do long before you start wasting time driving or flying around is to narrow down your boat as much as possible. Once narrowed down then its easy to figure out where you should be looking. If you say where can I go to get a 35 foot Bluewater capable boat , well that doesn't make any darn sense as its way way to broad to even think about getting a deal. I saved Roughly 45k on my most recent sailboat by the time it was all said and done by flying from Florida to the Caribbean. I also had a very very specific criteria for the boat and had been searching for close to 2 years. Patience, specifics and basic research will always save you money on a sailboat. If your looking for a 10k sailboat well then just check locally as any travel will kill any savings. Basic stuff as long as you research.

@@ChasingLatitudes It wasn't my intent to undermine your video, or nit pick it. I just haven't seen the deals in Panama, they must be hidden well. The Caribbean always has what sounds like some great deals listed. There probably are some good deals if you are there at the rite time, and can act quickly. However, for anyone not from Florida, there is a significant cost to get there. It's good that you got a good deal on your boat. However most experienced sailors have only bought one or two sailboats in their lifetime. That hardly makes them an expert on boat buying. My frustration wasn't aimed at you personally, more at the typical youtube video on boat buying.

@@randyfourtyeight7410 ohhh no I didn’t mean to come of as snarky my apologies. I totally agree with what you said and yes if your not in Florida the cost can be prohibitive for sure. Where are you located? And also yes most people on RU-vid have no idea what they are talking about. There is a really good channel that’s newer it’s called captain Q here on RU-vid . He goes all over finding deals , I know normally people don’t send there viewers to other RU-vidrs but the only reason I make videos is to help people get into the amazing world of sailing and he finds some really good deals so if you have time he’s worth checking out. Again sorry if I came off as snarky or rude was not my intentions at all. Is there a specific boat you have in mind ? This virus thing is making it very hard currently to do much of anything

Ding Ding Ding, finally someone gets it. Couldn't agree more with you, for reference the title says "Bluewater Sailing" Not sailboat. You know as well as I do the term "Bluewater sailboat" is always thrown around and has little if any meaning to any truly experienced sailor but cant fight the fact that its the search term associated with Bluewater sailing

You seem to forget import taxes, different electric systems, travel expenses, etc.....what’s your background?

No, no one forgot , you don’t go to panama to buy a 40k mono, you would go there if looking for let’s say a lagoon 440 or a cat in the 350k range. You wouldn’t travel anywhere until you have things as narrowed down as possible and have a specific boat and several of them lined up to look at. I saved almost 50k on mine by going to the usvi from Florida . I’m guessing your thinking maybe a less expensive boat and yes in that case travel wouldn’t make sense hence me explaining to narrow it down and search the larger sailing areas of the United States, local sailing community and so on.

@@ChasingLatitudes there's more then usa ....I live in europe for example....sure you can find great deals at the end of the world but if you fly there and then you see that the great deal is not so great....that will throw you back a couple thousand...best boat is the one you think is good for you....but to be honest....lots of your research on thise cheap Bluewater boats were completely off....looks dont make a boatprice.....fair winds be safe....

@@pdevrin Cheap Bluewater boats are just that , they are cheap, they will require extensive refits and after you factor in time spend on the refit you will almost have always been better off just purchasing one ready to go. Europe has some great deals but it really depends on the best boat for you. I wouldn't travel to far at all for a boat under 100k, after you factor in cost of travel its most likely not going to be worth the time and cost involved and you wont save much of anything. looks have nothing to do with a good boat ? I am not sure maybe you completely missed my point in the video or videos or maybe you didn't watch all the way through ? Sounds a bit like your selectively taking certain aspects of a video out of context. Lets take expedition Evans for example, I am guessing you have seen there videos recently ? What they are choosing to do I would never ever ever recommend for anyone, by the time they are done fixing what they thought " was a deal" they will have paid twice the cost of just purchasing that boat ready to go once you factor in their time. The best deals are found by simple hard work on the buyers part and putting in the time searching and knowing what you are looking for, what will fit your needs, and what boat will work for you. Not driving around looking at cheap garbage boats or hopping on a plane to look at a 40k boat, that makes no darn sense

Let me guys throw my penny I live in london uk , and it’s most expensive place followed by Holland, research for last 10 months and agree Fort Laundry ( too ignorant to check the spelling) looks like a place to look for your boat, In Mediterranean you’ll get good deal but on salvage ones That’s only my opinion
