A short film I've been forgetting to get to for a number of years now. During a two week trip to the Kruger Park, South Africa in 2016, we were fortunate enough to also spend time exploring the incredible landscape of Blyde River Canyon. This video is one of my first attempts at a cinematic aerial experience, though too be honest I was very inexperience back then. Little did I know about the importance of ND filters, 180-degree shutter angle rules and my piloting is anything but smooth.
However, the beautiful landscape of Blyde River Canyon more than makes up for some of my film-making shortcomings, and allowed me to get a couple of truly fantastic shots.
It's difficult to compare canyons world-wide, however. Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest canyons on Earth, and it may be the largest 'green canyon' due to its lush subtropical foliage. Unfortunately during 2016 the region was experiencing a major draught and resulted in a very dry, hazy and yellow environment. Though, still very beautiful in its magnitude, but a little less green.
