I have hard time understanding how you get such good sharpness in your pictures especially moving shots :O - Would you like to do a video tutorial on different shots ? I have a hard time getting my focus where i want it even on a tripod shot with my XL speedbooster and my Samyang vdlsr's its like they can focus fine in the far distance but when i get to 30-40 meters it wants to focus really close... even at f.4-5.6 :/ Getting your buttery luts NOW! AS always thanks for sharing!
I think he's more of a filmmaker who is kind enough to favour us with sharing his knowledge. That will be never a standard with the camera reviewers as they are mostly just technology buffs.
@@ariax4405 Of course nobody is expecting camera reviewers to travel across the world to shoot footage. Even just shooting in a nearby park or street would be increasing the value of their content by a hundredfold compared to just sitting in a studio.
@@Trazynn I don't understand your point, since it doesn't contradict with mine, and you're sounding like it does. I was pointing out that the comment "That awkward moment when a camera reviewer actually shoots great images." is so wrong. Because Matteo is less of a camera reviewer, and more of a filmmaker, that is why he can "actually" shoot great images. I don't see saying camera reviewers should... If you know how to shoot, it doesn't matter where and what you shoot. It can be shooting a chair. That's where the difference lies between most filmmakers and most camera reviewers...
You know what would be great, to make a camera operator series lol , maybe put it up here or on patreon. Camera movements when it’s fully rigged, camera moves when it’s light weight. how you develop a story. How you rack focus , I have trouble with this when ppl are coming at me fast, I close down the aperture but still I miss it sometimes.
Absolutly loved the "big room noir" shot! Totally beautiful. Running a Ursa Mini Pro and Micro Cinema Cameras myself and don't see to switch to other cameras in the next 5-10 years. Personally I think the Ursa Mini series "Mini Pro" and "Mini Pro G2" are the best cameras on the market right now for everyone not working on multimillion blockbuster movies. the prize/value ratio of the Ursa Minis is unbeaten.
A gh5 + bmpcc4k is my dream 2 camera setup. They can use the same lenses and i can use the bmpcc for documentaries and the gh5 for adventure filming when im backpacking. Unfortunately i dont own either :(
I like P4K because you get for that price camera which with speedbooster have parameters like older RED ONE-MX, with which Fincher shot The Social Network. Super 35, 13 stops. 120 FPS in better resolution now. With speedbooster you have even bigger lens area coverage.
I do video work in San Diego and LA with the BMPCC4K and always use your LUT as the starting point for all of my footage. You are one of the only filmmakers I take seriously on here..
Great video! I’ve been using a Viltrox speedbooster with the sigma 18-35 1.8 for videos on my channel. So happy with the quality and color from the footage for this price. I’m ALWAYS using your lut btw, makes the footage 10X easier to grade. I recommend it everyone who has a pocket cam🙌🏻
I'm with you Matteo. I have 2 P4K's and now the 6K and BM has changed the way I work for the better. I also have the Ursa G2 which is even better in terms of image quality. Just amazing. Great work by the way.
For several years I used DSLR to my documentaries for TV, 40+ until now. Lot of them about hunting, fishing,... Used allways Nikon D800 and D810 with viewfinder for focus. I switched some months ago to this awesome 4K camera, because the DSLR body shape as perfect for me. I was just waiting for it. Never used autofocus since 2010, and I use 80% of the time viewfinder. I just finished my first documentary with it and I'm very happy with the result. It's amazing! The only big difference from my old full frames of course is the deep of field. More difficult to focus but i'm almost OK with that. Just need some time with it. For my work style is just perfect. For the batteries just ordered two small pocket vmounts, I just can put it in a small waist bag. If I need to disconect for a moment no problem, there is the original battery on it for some moments. And remember, the most important is not the camera, it's the story!
Firstly let me compliment your work. You're a superb cinematographer and the results you've achieved and shown here are beautiful. As for the camera, I own one and agree with everything you've said. It's a remarkable piece of equipment and other than the form factor, it's an absolute joy to use.
Many years ago I was a cameraman and since I have got back into cinematography I have been surprised at the reliance on autofocus!! I got myself an original BMPCC but have been looking at turning that into my B and getting a 4k. Your review has made up my mind lol! BTW your visuals are stunning !
Thank you Matteo for an absolutely beautiful and informative video! You'r shoots are stunning and inspiring! I just got my BMPCC4K and are in pure awe of its performance. Always want to travel light when filming so I use the new 512 GB SD cards and 7 batteries. I use the 0.64 Metabones with Canon 24-105 with IS and the Canon 50mm 1.2 for super shallow depth of field. So happy with this camera! Its like everything becomes art.
I'm still getting started as a videomaker. For now I just added a Video Assist monitor to my Dslr and I'm super happy with the usability. Adding an external monitor changed positively of my workflow. DR is committing at the first look but, once you get familiar with it, you learn how powerful that software is. BlackMagic ecosystem is great and the value for the money is unbeatable at the moment. Great footage as always!
I've used many different cameras (Red and Arri among the others) but I've recently bought a pocket 4k for myself and I love it. I think it's the best camera I've ever used. A pocket beast! Anyways, thank you so much for always being such an inspiring and honest person!
i have the Blackmagic and I used it for a documentary recently. i was very happy with the way it turned out. the bm is versatile and is great for everything you said at the end and that is my primary area of use. just need to build out my sense collection.
Funny how this comes up 11 months later right when I’m considering buying the Pocket 4K. Totally agree about the form factor but considering how good everything else is I’ll just put up with that. Keen to know what your thoughts are on the 4K vs 6K. Absolutely sensational footage and grading! Thanks Matteo
I didn't see you address audio in this video. As a documentary filmmaker who operated and records his own sound, clean sound from 2 sources (shotgun as a failsafe) and a Lav mic, I need two clean preamps, one of which can deliver phantom power to my Sen MKH 416... My fear is using the 1/8" input for my lav will be noisy. Recording 200 hours of footage and syncing all audio in post is not an option for verite filmmaking. This is why C200 or C300 with 2XLR inputs is so critical. Thoughts about this predicament as I really would like to move to the BMPCC6k.
Hey! I usually have a sound guy, but otherwise I use rode lav and sound pretty good. I didn’t cover sound since I am not an expert, I would say for small projects my lav work just fine, otherwise I would hire a proper technician. Always trust them better ahah
I bought a Pocket 4K this summer with a Viltrox EF adapter, that I later replaced with an M II adapter. The camera was fine until one day when somehow it got a dust speck stuck inbetween the sensor glass and the sensor. Seemed like something that was left from manufacturing. I sent it in for a repair, even though a 5 minute repair would have helped. Got a brand new camera with two more Resolve licenses… Strange thing. But it took three weeks to get a new camera.
I just finished shooting a short film with this camera and can't praise this camera enough. I am very used to working with Alexa Mini, C300 and Red but this camera is just crazy good considering what you pay for it. I have come to the conclusion that if someone is unable to produce high-quality images out of this camera then that person doesn't know cinematography not the other way around. Also BRAW.
@@LordJagd The Alexa handles highlights and highlight roll-off's better (10-12% ish) . It is also better when having a bigger crew on set + it's a work horse, I am never afraid of it breaking on me. But again it cost over $70K so yeaaa.
I love my pocket but I’m seriously thinking in switching to a eos R simply for the fact you mention that for run and gun situations it’s kind of an hassle having an external monitor, being worried about batteries, etc. but then it’s so hard to get another camera after being used to the IQ of the pocket, that makes that decision a lot harder!
Fantastic review. I’m a GH4 owner and I reckon that this pocket 4K will be my next camera in the future. The only thing I don’t really like is the form factor. Apart from that, I’ll stick with the M43 system just because I can have almost every look by using speedboosters. In fact, I just have now one native m43 lens, but the rest are Canon glass paired with the SB XL 0.64. The most attractive feature for me is the variety of codecs and BM RAW. I’m kind of tired of the shitty h264 internal codec of the GH4.
Yo. Great review! I really don't like the DSLR look either, but i wouldn't want to miss Black magic raw, that's why for example the z cam isn't an option for me. also I think it would be great to have 1080p 120fps without a cropped window. Espessially with the mft sensor its extremely hard to get that field of view you want with that cropped window. So that's where the new black magic video assist comes into play. I think the z cam for example would pair perfectly with the new recorder, that also supports b-raw. But it definitely is quite a bit more expensive since the z cam itself isn't cheap… By the way, Effectively the pocket only costs $700 because there are TWO Resolve licences included! Many people don't know that.
If you have to decide: Full rigged BMPCC 4k or a used C200? I'm a one man show, so I have nobody pulling focus during special shots. I want to focus my work on sport/outdoor commercials. Which camera would you recommend?
Jonathan Stütz problem with the c200 is that you either shoot huge raw files or crappy and compressed mp4. Nothing in the middle. I would do ursa mini then.
Matteo Bertoli Visuals But I would be ok with these huge file sizes. What you become out of is in my opinion fantastic. And you get things like Autofocus, 15 Stops DR, build in ND, nice form factor
Jonathan Stütz the C200 is a fantastic camera for one man band type stuff. I say this as an owner of both C200 and BMPCC4K. If you nail exposure and white balance (which you should be doing anyways), the 8-bit footage holds up very well. I shoot projects that get displayed on a giant LED wall in an auditorium and the 8-bit looks beautiful on that screen.
When shooting in 24fps do you use a shoulder rig for moving shots for stabilization? Thinking of upgrading from a GH5 to the BMPCC 4K or 6K and my only concern is not being able to shoot 24fps in run and gun situations because of the lack of IBIS
Hey Matteo, have you ever had problems with unusual noise with the BMPCC4K? I can't really put my finger on it. I often get grainy images, even though I am shooting on 100 ISO. Especially noticable when light leaks hit a black surface, such as a black T-Shirt. That seems so odd to me. Why should light cause a grainy image. Any thoughts?
Hey Matteo! Loved this review. I think the BMPCC 4K is by far the best option at the price. That being said, as someone who considers themselves a sort of “advanced hobbyist” I needed a hybrid camera for both stills and video. I went with the Fujifilm X-T3 and I gotta say, I’ve been blow away by the video quality in F-Log! Have you used the X-T3?
Love this video.. so helpful, and getting me closer to pulling the trigger now. I did noticed (around 1:20) that your Canon 24mm gives you a green flare, that I get with my Lumix Leica lenses. Not sure if it's the lens coating or what, but it makes me a little crazy. I love flare, just not green.
Why wouldn't I go with the Metabones Canon FD Lens to Micro Four Thirds Camera T Adapter? Its a lot cheaper, $99 USD vs the $449 USD for the Speed Booster Ultra 0.71X Adapter. Really interested to know your opinion on this one.
Eric Cory cause it’s not a speedbooster. That means that your 24mm 2.8 will be a 50mm f/3.5. That’s the all point of the Speedbooster. Your camera will become a s35 and your 24mm will be a 32mm f/1.5. Huge difference
Hi, great video. Looking to upgrade my set-up to the bmpcc4k. I currently have a canon 80d with a 50 f1.8 as well as a 24-105 f4. What would you recommend I purchase to get the essentials? Thanks!
I'm really thinking of buying one, but I heard a few conplain about the camera heats up while shooting, and that makes significant demage after a year. Do you know anything about that?
Áron Gasztonyi i use vmount batteriesso the camera does not heat up at all. Like never. I used lpe6 a couple of times and never had a problem. This is a no issue, never even heard of it.
@@xtAqHNpFg speedbooster doesnt change dynamic range. Indeed if these cameras had 14-15 stops of dynamic range, RED would have to drop their prices or introduce a new, less expensive body.
I just recently got a pocket 4k thanks to your recommendation and love it! But I just noticed that my camera exhibits a high-frequency noise that comes out the side ports or near the fan vent at the bottom. Is that normal? Should I send my camera back? Is anyone else having this issue? its a very subtle sound but if I shoulder mount this camera it will definitely bother me since it will be right next to my ear.
Hey! Great video and awesome shots, thank you for all that valuable information! I'm currently creating my new BM4k. A nice rig, mainly for documentaries, but I am at a crosspoint: I only own 3 Nikkor lenses for my old D7000, never had experience with M4/3 or EF sensors.. Now, my question to you would be whether I should buy a super expensive metabones ultra (only efficient choice, as I discovered) and maybe a Sigma 18-35 to start with; or go with the native lenses, such as a Panasonic 12-35 and a 35-100? in "exchange" for the Speedbooster. Is the built in stabilisation really not so important when using a good rig (shoulder pad when needed)? Thank you again:)
I’m trying to buy a camera to work on small projects when I don’t have a production team and aren’t shooting on reds or alexas. I’m struggling between the 4K and the 6k. I’m not particularly worried about the resolution but more with the sensor size since I’m used to the super 35 look, and not so sure about the ideas of using metabones. But 4K is not only a lot cheaper but also allows me to use some cheaper cinema lenses like veydra. I shout for bigger screens so I think these details become more important than shooting for phone contents. Do you have any inputs on this?
I would like to know how I can get at least jobs to work in the industry or at least learn cinematography. Everybody says just grab your cam go out and practice... but I believe it doesn't cut it.
ruffdraft nope. I can’t even imagine managing 6k h264... and also for a lens and the camera you are gonna spend like an ursa mini. Doesn’t make any sense to me
@@matteobertoli Ok cool. I am tempted to try it out at a later date. But I am definitely eventually purchasing the Panasonic GH5 and GH5s. I actually bought third party batteries for them earlier this year. Matteo please keep doing your thing ok.
WAREVOL nah, you can go cheap. 100$ for cage. 300$ for 2 vmount with charger. 80$ ssd. Maybe other 200 for plate with rods. You can get a fully functional rig for less than 2K no problems.
@@matteobertoli difference in details is as expected when you compare lossy compression to lossless compression. you did not noticed it maybe because your lens/choice of aperture/filters/focal reducer was not resolving enough resolution to see the detail difference everyone else see : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7esuooyUvoU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D-naOOsW6Zc.html
Finally a camera gear focused channel that isn't a guy sitting in his room with gear on the table talking for 15 minutes about the camera he didn't shoot any footage with.
Me unfortunately I do need an autofocus cause my eyes are not good enough to tell on such a tiny screen if it's in focus or not. But I only use the autofocus to focus on one point and before pressing the record button I do switch to manual focus. So I know my object is in focus.
@@froznfire9531 Have no money... And I believe my eyes could still betray me on such small sized screens. But as soon as I can afford it, I will get myself a screen.
Everyone: I want to work in cinema. Also Everyone: tHiS caMERa doEsn'T HaVE autOFOcuS. You know what other cameras don't have autofocus? ARRI ALEXAS. Good luck finding a job.
Beautiful footage. Funny, I was typing this as I watched your video. And I was about to mention how at 1250 ISO gives you cleaner footage for low light, when you said it. Personally, I like the fact that the P4K is shaped like a common DSLR, because it allows me to shoot almost anywhere without drawing attention to myself. I can film in public, which I do often to test my lenses and P4K features, and no one pays attention to me. I am waiting for a Metabones adapter to show up, and I"m starting to look at EF mount lenses. Power wise, I have solutions like a v-mount and another power brick, both work perfectly with the P4K. At the moment, I don't see getting any other camera, except maybe another P4K. I don't know of any cameras out right now that have its "power" for a similar price. If I had thousands of dollars to throw around, I would probably look into an Alexa. But, as of now, I am so happy with my Blackmagic camera. I have an EF mount Rokinon 35mm f1.4 lens coming tomorrow. So, I will definitely be posting footage on my channel when I shoot with it. It's always good to see another BMPCC4K video from you. Your amazing footage inspires me to improve my P4K skills. Cheers.
Yes! I hated how people look when I had silver brick Production 4K camera before, then I sold that old camera with heavy pelicase and SSD disk for the price of new Pocket 4K, bought photo bag(backpack) for 80€ and now I am happy, it look like normal photo camera and no-one care, and bacpak looks normal. Maybe was not good idea to have on old black Peli case sticker with biohazard logo too :D
I can't stand the form factor. It's not like a normal DSLR, it's like a mutated DSLR with a huge tumor. Can't balance it on some gimbals without severe hacking. I think the Z Cam is ideal form factor.
Great video. I loved your shots. I was considering getting a Sony A6500 or a Canon 90D but you may have convinced me this is the way I want to go. What are your go to lens for this camera?
Really every shot your used is beautiful, which makes me feel that you are a reliable source for the review. I'm also very pleased to get to know that this camera is so reliable. Thank you for taking the time into this review!
